Book excerpt: Robert Somers, a Scottish journalist, was a keen and objective observer and gives a fair, detached, and balanced appraisal of economic life, politics and race relations in the South between 1870 and 1871. He was particularly interested in economic and social matters: cotton and sugar culture, Negroes, railroads, natural resources, labor, industry, immigration and education. Since an analysis of the South's economy was Somers' major objective, his book made an extraordinarily valuable contribution to the history of the South during Reconstruction. -- Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern States Since the War 1870-1 There is little to say by way of preface to this book. To explain how it came to be written would lead only to personal details of no interest to the reader. Its defects cannot be extenuated nor its merits enhanced by any statement in this form; and a Preface might as well be wholly dispensed with but for a tribute of thanks which it is alike incumbent and pleasing to pay. To John Pender, of Manchester, who warmly encouraged my design from first to last, and gave me letters of introduction that proved most valuable - to Robert Dalglish, M.P. for Glasgow, who readily obtained from the Foreign Office a letter commending Her Majesty's Consuls to render me such assistance as they could properly afford - and to all in the United States too numerous to name, from whom through these and other relationships much information was received - I owe the most cordial acknowledgments. Book The Army and Reconstruction 1865 1877

Download or read book The Army and Reconstruction 1865 1877 written by United States Army and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within two months of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865, the Confederacy had collapsed, and its armed forces had ceased to exist. In the spring of 1865, the U.S. Army faced the unprecedented task of occupying eleven conquered Southern states and administering "Reconstruction"-the process by which the former rebellious states would be restored to the Union. But a rapid demobilization of the Army placed the remaining occupation troops at a disadvantage almost from the start. This brochure traces the Army's law enforcement, stability, and peacekeeping roles in the South from May 1865 to the end of Reconstruction in 1877, marking a unique period in American history. During that time, the Southern states remained under military occupation, and for several years, they were also ruled by military government. Veteran Army commanders such as Philip H. Sheridan, John M. Schofield, Daniel E. Sickles, Edward R. S. Canby, and Winfield S. Hancock may have found the work of Reconstruction less dangerous than fighting the Civil War had been, but they also found it no less challenging.
