Book The South Boston Unitarian Ordination Classic Reprint

Download or read book The South Boston Unitarian Ordination Classic Reprint written by J. H. Fairchild and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South-Boston Unitarian Ordination We the undersigned, being present by special invitation, at the recent ordination of Rev. Charles C. Shackford as pastor of the Hawes Place Congregational Society in the Twelfth Ward of the city of Boston, heard a sermon preached by Rev. Theodore Parker of Spring street, Roxbury, in which sentiments were advanced so contrary to our ideas of Christianity, that we feel onrsclves constrained by a solemn sense of duty which we owe to the Church of Christ, to inquire whether the Unitarian clergymen of Boston and vicinity sympathize with the preacher in his opinions as expressed on that occasion? We noticed as members of the ordaining Council, Rev. Dr. Pierce of Brookline, Rev. Messrs. Lothrop, Barrett, Robbins, Bartol and Sargent, of Boston, and Rev. Mr. Putnam of Roxbury, and several others. We hope it will not be deemed impertinent in us to ask, whether the clergymen who composed that Council sanction the sentiments of the preacher, or acknowledge him as a Christian minister? As there was no protest after the sermon by the moderator, or by any member of the Council against the sentiments advanced, we wish to know whether silence in this case, is to be construed into assent. We were hoping that when the venerable Dr. Pierce arose to offer the ordaining prayer, he would have remembered the Apostolic injunction, "Lay hands suddenly on no man." and that he would have said to the candidate, "If your sentiments accord with those of the preacher, I cannot consecrate you to the work of the Christian ministry." But in this we were disappointed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Transient and Permanent in Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Transient and Permanent in Christianity Classic Reprint written by Theodore Parker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Transient and Permanent in Christianity A number of the earliest and the latest, as well as several of the most significant, of Theodore Parker's sermons have been brought together in this volume. His South Boston sermon, which first brought him into prominence as an expounder of the new theology, gives title to the volume. It is followed by his epoch-making discourse on Jesus, at "the Great and Thursday Lecture." The earliest written of his sermons to secure the honor of print, that on the relations of the Bible to the soul, has never before been reprinted from the pages of the obscure magazine in which it appeared. Following these sermons are a number which were first printed in "The Dial," the famous organ of transcendentalism. Emerson said of them, that "some numbers had an instant exhausting sale, because of papers by Theodore Parker." Among these were the sermons on "The Pharisees," and "Primitive Christianity." His earliest critical article is his "Thoughts on Theology," in review of Dorner's book on Christ. His sermon on goodness also occupied a conspicuous place in his controversy with the religious leaders of his day. Special occasions gave emphasis to his discourses on the use of Sunday, and the real meaning of revivals. The revival sermons, if severe, are sane and profoundly ethical. His first ordination sermon after that at South Boston gave opportunity for a more explicit interpretation of his later and wiser theology. Book Rules for Radicals

Download or read book Rules for Radicals written by Saul Alinsky and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.
