Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of consciousness in all matter--from quantum to cosmos • Outlines theories of consciousness in ancient and modern philosophy from before Plato to Alfred North Whitehead • Reveals the importance of understanding mind-in-matter for our relationships with the environment, with other people, even with ourselves Are rocks conscious? Do animals or plants have souls? Can trees feel pleasure or pain? Where in the great unfolding of life did consciousness first appear? How we answer such questions can dramatically affect the way we live our lives, how we treat the world of nature, and even how we relate to our own bodies. In this new edition of the award-winning Radical Nature, Christian de Quincey explores the “hard problem” of philosophy--how mind and matter are related--and proposes a radical and surprising answer: that matter itself tingles with consciousness at the deepest level. It’s there in the cells of every living creature, even in molecules and atoms. Tracing the lineage of this idea through Western philosophy and science, he shows that it has a very noble history--from before Plato to Alfred North Whitehead. He reveals that the way to God is through nature and that understanding how body and soul fit together has surprising consequences for our relationships with our environment, with other people, and even with ourselves.

Book The Soul

  • Author : John Patrick Rowan
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2008-11-18
  • ISBN : 1725223775
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Soul written by John Patrick Rowan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology that ignores the soul is indeed an odd sort of psychology. But such it is in many colleges today. On the basis of thoroughgoing materialism it has to be nothing more than the physiology of the nervous system. Hence a sound philosophical study of the soul is timely. Where are we to find an exposition and proof of the basic truths on which the structure of psychology must be erected? They are in St. Thomas' DE ANIMA. This opusculum discusses twenty-one questions about the soul, among which are the following: Whether the angel and the human soul differ specifically. Whether the soul is in the whole body and in each part of it. Whether the soul is identical with its powers. Whether the soul, existing apart from the body, can suffer punishment by corporeal fire. Doctor Rowan's translation, though a faithful rendition of the original, is in clear, readable English. The value of this version is greatly enhanced by copious footnotes of two kinds: exact citations of authors (e.g., Aristotle, St. Augustine) to whom St. Thomas refers; explanations of terms and views that otherwise might be obscure to modern readers. The translator has also provided a comprehensive index.

Book Questions on the Soul by John Buridan and Others

Download or read book Questions on the Soul by John Buridan and Others written by Gyula Klima and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features essays that explore the insights of the 14th-century Parisian nominalist philosopher, John Buridan. It serves as a companion to the Latin text edition and annotated English translation of his question-commentary on Aristotle’s On the Soul. The contributors survey Buridan’s work both in its own historical-theoretical context and in relation to contemporary issues. The essays come in three main sections, which correspond to the three books of Buridan’s Questions. Coverage first deals with the classification of the science of the soul within the system of Aristotelian sciences, and surveys the main issues within it. The next section examines the metaphysics of the soul. It considers Buridan’s peculiar version of Aristotelian hylomorphism in dealing with the problem of what kind of entity the soul (in particular, the human soul) is, and what powers and actions it has, on the basis of which we can approach the question of its essence. The volume concludes with a look at Buridan’s doctrine of the nature and functions of the human intellect. Coverage in this section includes the problem of self-knowledge in Buridan’s theory, Buridan’s answer to the traditional medieval problem concerning the primary object of the intellect, and his unique treatment of logical problems in psychological contexts.

Book Technology and the Soul

Download or read book Technology and the Soul written by Wolfgang Giegerich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. G. Jung famously declared that it is not the psyche that is in us, but rather we who are in the psyche. Updating this insight, the second volume of Wolfgang Giegerich’s Collected English Papers examines what must be regarded as the most all-encompassing presence of our lives today: technological civilization. Living within technology, we now find that what we had formerly regarded as psychological phenomena—our feelings and emotions, images and dreams—have been superseded by phenomena bearing the predicates "artificial," "manufactured," and "virtual." Television, the World Wide Web, and the nuclear bomb are cases in point. Far from being mere things among things, each of these has transformed the whole of man’s world-relation. Though deplored by many as soulless on this account, these phenomena, it may be argued, are the real gods, the real archetypes, of the soul today. Psychologically it is not what we think and feel about them that counts, but what they think, what they feel.

Thomas McEvilley explores how trade, imperialism, and migration currents allowed cultural philosophies to intermingle freely throughout India, Egypt, Greece, and the ancient Near East. This groundbreaking reference will stir relentless debate among philosophers, art historians, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘There is one temple in the Universe and it is the body of Man.’ – Novalis How are the internal and external forms of the human organism shaped? How does human consciousness emerge? These are questions to which conventional science has no answers. In The Seat of the Soul, Yvan Rioux invites us to consider new concepts that can explain these phenomena. His exposition is based on the existence of external ‘formative forces’ – or morphic fields – which, he argues, create the human body or organism in conjunction with forces that resonate within us from the living solar system. The psyche – or soul – emerges progressively as an inner world of faculties that in time learns to apprehend and understand the outer world. In his previous book The Mystery of Emerging Form, Rioux explored the formative forces of the twelve zodiacal constellations. In this absorbing sequel, he investigates how such activity from the planetary spheres works within us, as ‘life stages’ or metabolic processes. Through seven chapters, he explores the impact of each of these planetary spheres on our complex organic make-up and psychic activity. The link between organs and tissues, he says, produces five specific ‘inner landscapes’ in relation to the external rhythmic environment. Rioux also gives a description of Rudolf Steiner’s seven ‘planetary seals’ from a biological perspective. According to Steiner, these seals are: ‘…occult scripts, meaning that, as hidden signatures, they show their ongoing etheric impacts on the seven stages of our metabolism’. Between Steiner’s indications concerning human physiology and the ancient Chinese view on the subject, there is a convergence of ideas – as synthesized here – that breaks through the boundaries of modern reductionist science, offering exciting perspectives for understanding the human being. ‘The seat of the soul is where the inner world and the outer world meet. Where they overlap, it is in every point of the overlap.’ – Novalis

This book was released on 2019-01-20 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is all about simple methods that we can all adopt in order to attain peace of mind and to learn the ways of spirituality. It educates us about being conscious towards the needs of the soul as much as we are towards bodily needs. Following the methods enlisted, one can gain synchronicity of the soul with the higher energy realm. The book highlights factors that create long-lasting effect on the soul. It is all about keeping your 'soul consciousness' awake. This book will help you gain the perspective of the actual reason of human birth and of how one can be free from karmic bondage and be liberated from the vicious cycle of incarnation. The writings emphasise on the practice of mindfulness which leads one to accept life as it is and to vibrate positivity in every situation of life no matter how negative it may seem. The book highlights the fact that we are lost in a different world that has taught us to analyse ourselves as humans searching for their spiritual awakening, whereas the truth is that we are spiritual beings that are trapped within human incarnation which is so stained with materialistic vices that it knows not which path to tread in life.
