Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This significant volume is the first to present in detail the entire prolific vocal repertoire of the late-Romantic German composer Max Reger. The Songs of Max Reger: A Guide and Study begins with a brief introduction discussing the development of German Lied, then journeys through this creative composer's works for voice and piano. With many musical examples, Richard Mercier and Donald Nold present a survey and discussion of Reger's lifetime of song output. The book proceeds through the songs chronologically by opus number, discussing each individually. All entries include details pertinent to the song's particular poem, its musical setting, the date of musical composition, the vocal range required, and discussion of specific vocal and pianistic features. The text also provides the original German poem, word-for-word English translation of the German text, IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) pronunciation symbols for the German, and a prose version of the poetic text in English for better appreciation of the piece. An index and two appendixes complete this important reference, arranging the songs by title and poet and supplying information on vocal range, level of difficulty, and gender. Designed for the classical vocal music enthusiast and invaluable to the singer and vocal coach, this book, commemorating the 135th anniversary of the composer's birth, will also appeal to accompanists, Reger scholars, and lovers of German Lieder and German art and culture.

Book Selected Writings of Max Reger

Download or read book Selected Writings of Max Reger written by Christopher Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Reger (1873-1916) was a celebrated German composer, performer on piano and organ, and conductor. Well known for his compositions for keyboards and orchestra, Reger worked during the crucial decades when Western music transformed itself from the misty veil of Romanticism and Impressionism to the more hard-edged modernism that would prevail in the 20th century. Less well known are his writings about music and the composer's craft. Although he wrote a major book on music theory published in 1903 (and translated into English a year later), his extended essays on composition, his fellow composers, and analysis have never appeared before in English. Christopher Anderson, a noted Reger scholar, has gone back to original manuscripts as well as the published versions of these writings to produce definitive new texts. Additionally, Anderson has written an opening essay placing Reger's writings and music in the context of his time. This volume will appeal strongly to those interested in the Late Romantic era, musical composition and aesthetics, and of course those interested in the music and life of Reger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Grant Still (1895-1978) dreamed of a world in which his eight operas--for him the ultimate form of musical expression--would be heard in the major opera houses in the United States, devoting most of his career toward the pursuit of this goal. The first part of I Dream a World creates a context for Still's operas and explores commonalities among them, including structural elements and musical characteristics. The second part traces the research, composition, and perform-ances of the operas as a way of documenting the history of the composer and his contributions to American opera. Although I Dream a World is not intentionally biographical, it is very pers-onal. It is more than the story of William Grant Still's love of operatic music, of the libretti that reflect his own life and philosophy, and of the world he dreamed through his work. It opens a window on Still the man as well as on Still the composer that offers important insights into the social milieu of this pioneering figure.

Book Handbook for Cello Students

Download or read book Handbook for Cello Students written by Phyllis Luckman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From How To Use This Book: This handbook has been compiled as a reference book for cello students-those working with the cello by themselves as well as those taking lessons. It offers information of all sorts, ranging from the rudiments of music notation, to ideas that illuminate the music the cellist plays and hears. Everything in the book is applicable to the performance of music and to playing the cello. This handbook is not a substitute for a teacher. It is not an instructional manual for learning to play the cello. It deals with "what" and "why" but not "how". Cello players without any knowledge of theory-or those who have only a sketchy acquaintance with it-may find what they need to know in the theory sections of this book. Those who already understand theory, but not much about the cello, can skip to the sections on the instrument. There are also subjects of general interest to all

Book Max Reger s Music for Solo Piano

Download or read book Max Reger s Music for Solo Piano written by Helmut Brauss and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the musical world acquainted itself with the musical utterances of a rustic Bavarian composer named Max Reger, the music of this unique composer has been highly controversial. The response of musicians, critics and musically educated audience to Reger, internationally acknowledged as a master composer, has been and still is rather ambiguous, vacillating from the utmost extremes of enthusiastic acceptance and vociferous rejection to benign indifference. Although Max Reger is reasonably well established as a composer for organ music, his piano music is virtually unknown. This book will help the ever exploring pianist and the interested student to recognize the best of Max Reger's piano music. These astonishing pieces show a multitude of imaginative musical ideas with an incredible compositional mastery, expressed in bold harmonic concepts and overpowering logical polyphonic structures. After exploring Max Reger's tumultuous life, the book discusses the solo piano pieces that show Reger's most original creation in this genre, are rewarding concert pieces, or have substantial pedagogical value. The author focuses on practical, interpretative aspects, touching on theoretical analysis only as far as it is necessary to understand Reger's style, although special attention is paid to specific stylistic and compositional features central to Reger's musical language.

Book The Cambridge Companion to the Lied

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Lied written by James Parsons and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning several generations before Schubert, the Lied first appears as domestic entertainment. In the century that follows it becomes one of the primary modes of music-making. By the time German song comes to its presumed conclusion with Richard Strauss's 1948 Vier letzte Lieder, this rich repertoire has moved beyond the home and keyboard accompaniment to the symphony hall. This is a 2004 introductory chronicle of this fascinating genre. In essays by eminent scholars, this Companion places the Lied in its full context - at once musical, literary, and cultural - with chapters devoted to focal composers as well as important issues, such as the way in which the Lied influenced other musical genres, its use as a musical commodity, and issues of performance. The volume is framed by a detailed chronology of German music and poetry from the late 1730s to the present and also contains a comprehensive bibliography.

Book Max Reger and Karl Straube

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Anderson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351558765

Download or read book Max Reger and Karl Straube written by Christopher Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Reger (1873-1916) is perhaps best-known for his organ music. This quickly assumed a prominent place in the repertory of German organists due in large measure to the efforts of Reger‘s contemporary Karl Straube (1873-1950). The personal and collegial relationship between the composer and performer began in 1898 and developed until Reger‘s death. By that time, Straube had established himself as an important artist and teacher in Leipzig and the central authority for the interpretation of Reger‘s organ music. The Reger-Straube relationship functioned on a number of levels with decisive consequences both for the composition of the music and its interpretation over a period fraught with upheaval on sociopolitical, religious and aesthetic fronts. This book evaluates the significance of the relationship between the composer and organist using primary source materials such as autograph performing manuscripts, reviews, programmes, letters and archival sources from contemporary organ building. The result is a much enhanced understanding of Reger in terms of performance practice and reception history, and a re-examination of Straube and, more broadly, of Leipzig as a musical centre during this period.
