Book excerpt: After the battle of Sedan on September 1, 1870 and the collapse of the Second Empire, followed by the investment of Paris, the Government of National Defense set about raising fresh armies. These had as their first objective the relief of the capital. The German troops covering the investment were stretched extremely thin until the fall of Metz at the end of October 1870. This released the forces around the city to move north and west to deal with the newly forming French armies. The German Campaign in the northeast of France was conducted by the First Army led by General Edwin von Manteuffel. Opposing him was the French Army of the North, initially commanded for a short time by General Charles Bourbaki. He was soon replaced by General Louis Faidherbe, who was sent far from Africa. The Campaign was fought to a large extent over the area of the Somme battlefields of the First World War, and the names of the towns and villages are grimly familiar with the resonance of what was to come. In 1914-1918, the direction of the fighting was on an east - west axis; in 1870 - 1871, it was north-south, with the line of the Somme being crucial to the outcome of the Campaign. The first major battle was the battle of Amiens on November 24; fought before Faidherbe's arrival, the Army of the North was led by the Chief of Staff, General Farre. It resulted in a German victory and the capture of Amiens. In December, Faidherbe advanced and took up a strong defensive position along the line of the River Hallue, where a fierce battle was fought on December 23. After the French retreat, Faidherbe regrouped, and advanced again, this time on Bapaume. Another fierce encounter followed on January 3, at the end of which each side believed itself to be defeated. Faidherbe was thwarted in his objective to lift the Siege of Péronne, which fell on January 9. By now the situation at Paris was desperate, and on January 15 Faidherbe began a march eastwards with a view to compelling the movement of part of the investing armies to meet his advance. This resulted in the crucial battle of Saint Quentin on January 19, in which the Germans were now led by the redoubtable General August von Goeben, who won a final and decisive victory. The Author draws on a wide range of rare contemporary sources to describe the Campaign, which was fought in appalling weather conditions. The book is copiously illustrated, with specially drawn color battle maps to demonstrate the course of the Campaign, and also includes extensive orders of battle. This is the latest title in Helion's ground-breaking series of 19th Century studies, and will again appear in hardback as a strictly limited edition printing of 500 copies, each individually numbered and signed by the author on a decorative title page.

In fact there was extensive fighting during the opening phase of he war, as both the French and Germans tried to outflank each other. Through the autumn and winter there was a struggle to hold the best tactical ground, with small scale but ferocious skirmishes from Beaumont Hamel to the Somme. The conflict in what became known as the Glory Hole, close to the well known Lochnagar Crater, was particularly prolonged. Evidence of the fighting, mainly in the form of a large mine crater field, is visible today. The underground war was not confined to la Boisselle, with a similar crater field developing on Redan Ridge; whilst south of the Somme, to be covered in a future volume, great lengths of No Man's Land were dominated by mine craters. Serre, best known to British readers for its association with the Pals Battalions on 1 July 1916, witnessed a significant, if local, French offensive in June 1915, with casualties running into the several thousands. It is a battle that has left its mark on the landscape today, with a French national cemetery and a commemorative chapel acting as memorials to the battle. The book is introduced by a chapter describing the role of the area in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, a war which arguably provided the seed bed for the outbreak of war in 1914. Several battles were fought in Somme villages that were to become the victims of war all over again forty plus years later.

As in the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Paris Commune of 1871 grew directly from the discontent among radicalized soldiers and civilians pressed into armed service on behalf of institutions they learned to mistrust. If this militarized class conflict, the brutality of the Commune's subsequent repression not only butchered the tens of thousands of Parisians but slaughtered an old utopian faith that appeals to reason and morality could resolve social tensions. Book excerpt: The 25th Division (74th, 75th and 76th Brigades) was formed in September 1914, one of Kitchener's Third New Army divisions, under the command of Major-General F.Ventris (late Essex), who had retired some five years earlier. He was replaced at the end of May 1915 by B.J.C Doran (late R Irish Regt), a regular, promoted from command of the 68th Brigade; prior to that he had commanded the 8th Infantry Brigade in France during the first two months of the war. The division went to France in September 1915 and a month later the 76th Brigade was transferred to the 3rd Division in exchange for the 7th Brigade. For the next six months or so the division was in the ‘Plugstreet'/Armentieres sector before moving down to Vimy Ridge in May 1916, where it was awarded the first of the six VCs it was to win by the end of the war. Command changed again in June when E.G.T Bainbridge replaced Doran who was sent back to command a district in Ireland. Thereafter the division fought on the Somme, at Messines, Third Ypres, in the German offensive of March/April 1918 and finally on the Aisne in May 1918, with IX Corps under French command. When the division was taken out of the line in mid-June it had, since February, suffered losses of some 15,500 of whom 7,500 were missing. At this point the divisional and brigade HQs and the infantry battalions were sent back to England where the division was reconstituted; it returned to France in September with another commander, J.R.E Charles, who had taken over in August. This is reflected in the divisional history which is divided into two parts, Part I is concerned with the original division, Part II with the reborn division. Kincaid-Smith’s work is unlike any other Great War divisional history in that nearly half the book is taken up with citations (over 300 of them), lists of honours and awards, tables of casualties and details of officer casualties. As he says in his introduction, he sets out to give a very brief sketch of the operations in which the 25th Division was engaged from time to time, so this is not a continuous narrative. Beginning with the Somme he devotes a chapter to each of the major operations involving the division, each chapter followed by the honours and awards gained plus selected citations; usually, such details appear in appendices. From time to time casualties suffered by the division over a given period are summarised in tables that give the figures for every unit; each of these tables (there are four of them) is followed by the names of the officer casualties (killed, wounded and missing), listed by units; individual dates are not given. By the end of the war the division’s losses amounted to 48,289 of whom 623 Officers and 12,663 Other Ranks made the supreme sacrifice.
