Book excerpt: Are you a Christian eager to deepen your spiritual life and experience the healing of America? In The Solomon Promise, bestselling author Henry Blackaby shares the path to a revival of faith in America and the restoration of holiness to God’s people. How will you respond? Revival waits on the holiness of His people, and Blackaby shares insight on the path that will lead us back. The Solomon Promise encourages readers to: look inward and to see sin from God’s perspective live to the standard that He has set in Scripture With unease on the rise and division causing a rift in the nation, Blackaby reminds believers that “while leaders and governments can influence a nation, there is no group of people who can determine the coming years of a nation like God’s people.” This book is a great self-purchase or gift for someone wanting to deepen their spiritual life and experience healing through the power of the Lord. Inside, you’ll learn: how to apply the principles of God and understand His promises by using the topical Scripture memory and prayer section in the book the concept of holiness and how to embrace our responsibility to God the path Christians must take in order to revive the faith in America If there ever was a time America needed revival, it is now. Currently, 70% of churches have plateaued or are in decline. More than two-thirds of young people who grew up attending church are leaving the faith before they graduate from college. More than 4,000 churches in America close their doors every year. God’s people keep praying for God to transform Washington, Hollywood, or Wall Street, but revival always begins with God’s people themselves.

Book The Solomon Narratives in the Context of the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book The Solomon Narratives in the Context of the Hebrew Bible written by Sean E. Cook and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with ascertaining the value of having two versions of the same monarchic history of Israel within the Hebrew Bible (focusing on the books of Kings and Chronicles). It is furthermore concerned with how the book of Chronicles is read in relation to the book of Kings as Chronicles is so often considered to be a later rewritten text drawing upon an earlier version of the Masoretic Text of Samuel and Kings. The predominant scholarly approach to reading the book of Chronicles is to read it in light of how the Chronicler emended his source texts (additions, omissions, harmonizations). This approach has yielded great success in our understanding of the Chronicler's theology and rhetoric. However, Cook asserts, it has also failed to consider how the book of Chronicles can be read as an autonomous and coherent document. That is, a diachronic approach to reading Chronicles sometimes misses the theological and rhetorical features of the text in its final form. This book shows the great benefit of reading these narratives as autonomous and coherent by using the Solomon narratives as a case study. These narratives are first read individually, and then together, so as to ascertain their uniqueness vis-à-vis one another. Finally, Cook addresses questions related to the concordance of these narratives as well as their purposes within their respective larger literary contexts.

Book Society and the Promise to David

Download or read book Society and the Promise to David written by William M. Schniedewind and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-06-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second book of Samuel, the prophet Nathan tells King David that God will give to him and his descendants a great and everlasting kingdom. In this study Schniedewind looks at how this dynastic Promise has been understood and transmitted from the time of its first appearance at the inception of the Hebrew monarchy until the dawn of Christianity. He shows in detail how, over the centuries, the Promise grew in importance and prestige. One measure of this growing importance was the Promise's ability to coax new readers into fresh interpretations.

Book Promise Land

Download or read book Promise Land written by Jessica Lamb-Shapiro and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A funny yet surprisingly nuanced look at the legends and ideas of the self-help industry” (People, 3.5 stars), Promise Land explores the American devotion to self-improvement—even as the author attempts some deeply personal improvements of her own. Raised by a child psychologist who was himself the author of numerous self-help books, as an adult Jessica Lamb-Shapiro found herself both repelled and fascinated by the industry: did all of these books, tapes, weekend seminars, groups, posters, t-shirts, and trinkets really help anybody? Why do some people swear by the power of positive thinking, while others dismiss it as so many empty promises? Promise Land is an irreverent tour through the vast and strange reaches of the world of self-help. In the name of research, Jessica attempted to cure herself of phobias, followed The Rules to meet and date men, walked on hot coals, and even attended a self-help seminar for writers of self-help books. But the more she delved into the history and practice of self-help, the more she realized her interest was much more than academic. Forced into a confrontation with the silent grief that had haunted both her and her father since her mother’s death when she was a baby, she realized that sometimes thinking you know everything about a subject is a way of hiding from yourself the fact that you know nothing at all. “A jaunty, cannily written memoir” (Chicago Tribune), Promise Land is cultural history from “a witty and enjoyably self-aware writer…Jessica Lamb-Shapiro’s talent as a storyteller is undeniable” (The New York Times Book Review).

Download or read book Impeccable Solomon written by Yong Ho Jeon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solomon's idolatry, his murder of his political enemies, and his role in the breakup of the kingdom, which are bluntly presented in Kings, are omitted in Chronicles. Is King Solomon presented as impeccable in Chronicles, in stark contrast to his portrayal in Kings? Is Solomon idealized in Chronicles at the cost of honest writing of history? To this question, the consensus view says, "Yes." However, Yong Ho Jeon takes a different route and maintains that the Chronicler's portrait of Solomon is much more nuanced than many suppose. Jeon employs a "reader-sensitive" approach that considers the biblical writer's intention to use his readers' prior knowledge and the reading process itself to present a portrait of Solomon. Applying this methodology results in a new interpretation of Solomon not only in Chronicles but in Kings as well.
