This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sociology of the Bible The lectures on Sociology I have been giving the students of our Theological Seminary for the past six years have been designed to make them leaders of the church in a conscious and intelligent effort to better society. I have tried to show them how the knowl edge of the laws of God as we discover them both in the social life of mankind generally, and especially in the social life described in the Bible, may be applied in establishing the Kingdom of God, the highest ideal of society in each community and in the whole earth. This book contains the substance of these lectures wrought into form for popular reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sociological Study of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sociological Study of the Bible Classic Reprint written by Louis Wallis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociological Study of the Bible This book is an evolutionary study of Christendom. Although it largely takes the form of research into ancient history, it is in substance an inquiry into vital questions of today. Owing to the recent separation of Church and State, there is a tendency to take for granted that religion deals only with matters of belief about things that have no concern for "practical" persons, or that it relates only to private, individual affairs. Hence the need for pointing out that the vital religious ideas of Christian society took shape in response to a social pressure as tremendous and compelling as that in which we live today. The present social revival of the church is part of a wider awakening which extends beyond the limits of religious institutions, and which has already put its deep mark on the age. Although every period of history has its own difficulties, there are times in which the social problem bids for attention more acutely and insistently than at others; and the present seems to be such a time. The purpose of this book is to state, as clearly and simply as possible, the relation of the Bible to the social problem. The title Sociological Study of the Bible seems to carry much of its own explanation with it. But the term "sociology" is a new one; and some prefatory statement of the general drift of the treatise will therefore be of more than usual assistance to the reader. In the first place, this book takes the standpoint of what is called "pure science." It seeks to know the historical facts of the subject before it, and to interpret these facts in their actual, historical connections. I have avoided notes, debates, and citation of authorities, in the interest of brevity and clearness. Acknowledgment of obligations to various authorities will be made in the bibliography which accompanies this work. The book, however, is a fresh study at first hand of the Bible in the light of the principles of sociology. So far as I know, the term biblical sociology was first used in my announcements. It has since been adopted by two or three other writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Bible as a Community Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible as a Community Book Classic Reprint written by Arthur E. Holt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as a Community Book Away out on the edge of civilization where Sage Brush Mesa joins on to Sucker Flats lies the frontier region of No-Man's Land. Its inhabitants first came in search of isolation and in the hope that they might escape the problems of living together which confronted them in the more thickly settled communities. The first person to offer a solution of the problem was Dead-Eye Dick, the crack shot of all this district. He sought to build a community based on fear of himself. He acquired an authority which few dared to dispute. Armed to the teeth with the latest man-killing instruments, he ruled over the length and breadth of No-Man's Land. But Dead-Eye Dick came to grief because while it is always possible for one man to be stronger than another man it is very hard for one man to be stronger than two men. One night in a saloon, led by a fellow called Combination Bill, a gang fell upon Dead-Eye Dick, and his authority was at an end. Because this gang had learned the secret of strength in combination, for a long time they held sway over the district between Sage Brush Mesa and Sucker Flats. But their secret was soon discovered and other gangs were formed who disputed their authority, and there was war incessant. Book The Social Teachings of the Jewish Prophets

Download or read book The Social Teachings of the Jewish Prophets written by William Bennett Bizzell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Teachings of the Jewish Prophets: A Study in Biblical Sociology This study also frankly assumes that the social message of the Jewish prophet weis intended for his own times. Each had in mind a real and present situation. This fact limits the application of the prophet's social message in two ways. In the first place, the social program of the prophets does not include the social problems that have grown out of new conditions that did not exist in their time. In the second place, there were, in the days of the prophets, acute social problems to which they di rected their attention and which have either found solution, or changing conditions have made unim portant. On the other hand, there were incipient social situations, like slavery, which were later to grow into serious problems that baffled the reform ers of many generations, but which received scanty attention at the hands of the prophets. It is hardly necessary to say that the author does not claim great originality for the views expressed in this book. The footnotes and list of readings at the end of each chapter will reveal the fact that many volumes have been referred to in the prepara tion of the book. However, the diversity of opin ions of Bible scholars and the fragmentary nature of the social material has made it necessary to choose between conflicting views, and to collect the social data largely by independent effort. An at tempt has been made to preempt the prophetic litera ture of its social content, and let it convey its own message. The author hopes that in the task he has not made omissions of important data. Book Christian Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Sociology Classic Reprint written by J. H. W. Stuokenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Sociology NO attempt is here made to treat the subject of Christian Sociology exhaustively. It is rather the Author's aim to present it clearly, to urge its claims to careful study, to show its practical bearings, and to call on Christian scholars to aid in its further develop ment. The field of thought here entered is rich but unexplored; and, perhaps, little more can now be done than to call attention to the wealth which the Christian thinker may appropriate. Instead of claiming to have perfected the system, the author rather regards the treatment as tentative, and is satisfied with the modest claim of giving elements, hints, principles, outlines, suggestive thoughts, and guide-boards for future explorers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in the Making: A Study in Biblical Sociology For nearly twenty years I have been teaching sociology to the upper classmen in the University of Minnesota. During about the same length of time I have been teaching the Bible to special classes in connection with the Peoples Church of St. Paul. It was not until ten years ago that the thought occurred to me that there is anything in common between these two departments of labor. About that time I formed the opinion that sociology might prove one of the best instruments for the interpretation of the Bible, and that, on the other hand, the bible might prove to be one of the best sources of sociology material. My subsequent studies have been largely influenced by this conclusion. During two winters I pursued the joint study with selected companies of students. The work seemed so promising that four years ago I offered work in biblical sociology to my classes in the university. This is a condensation of a part of the work done in the university classes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the Christian church has had a troubled relationship with the arts, whether literature, poetry, music, visual arts, or other forms of artistic expression. This volume is not designed to resolve the issues, but it is designed to present a number of different statements about various dimensions of the arts in their relationship to the Bible. The Bible is the document that stands behind the Christian church as an inspiration to it and to its arts. As a result, we have divided this volume into six parts: perspectives on the arts, culture and art, visual enactments, contemporary interpretations, music, and the Bible and literature. Many of the issues that the history of the interaction of the arts and the Bible within the Christian church has uncovered are insightfully and artfully addressed by this book. The wide range of contributors runs the gamut from practicing artists of various media to scholars within varied academic fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Theory of the Bible Of this theory to the interpretation of the history of Israel abolished the Old distinction between sacred and profane history, and put the history of the Jews on the same basis with the history Of the Greeks and Romans. The Darwinian theory Of evo lution gave a scientific basis for this conception of history. According to the theory Of Darwin, man is a developed ape. From a monkey he gradually grew to be a man, passing in countless ages through the successive stages of Paleolithic man, Neolithic man, the Cave man, the Primitive man, until at last he emerged a civilised man. As such he invented the art of writing, and began to make a permanent record of events. Even after he became civilised ln a'measure, that is, began to wear clothes, and to notice things around him, and ask questions about them, he was for a long period of time in a state Of childhood, believed in ghosts, wonder-tales, marvels, and miracles so that the early records Of all nations, the Jews included, con sist Of a mass of mythological stories, that have no historical value, except as illustrations of the crude and undeveloped life Of the primitive people. Book Bible Manners and Customs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bible Manners and Customs Classic Reprint written by G. M. Mackie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Manners and Customs In modern Palestine and Syria there are a great many things in the climate and landscape, in plant and animal life, in the habits and occupations of the people, in their modes of dress and forms of Speech, that are exactly the same as those alluded to in the Bible. This wonderful continuance of unchanged custom, during so long a period, is chiefly due to the following causes (l) the Oriental kinship of the present inhabitants with the ancient Israelites; (2) the close resemblance between the Hebrew language and the Arabic which is now spoken; (3) the suitableness of the customs to the climate and industries of the land; (4) the reluctance to admit changes under what is called the patriarchal form of government, where the sheikhs or heads of chief families, from father to son, rule over their several districts. So great is this resemblance with regard to natural surroundings, dress, and occupations, with reference also to common opinion and sentiment about life, work, home, and religion, that if the same events were to happen again in Palestine, and the truths of Scripture were now to be told for the first time, the description and statement of them would inevitably take the mould and form with which we are already familiar in the Bible.
