In this biography--the first in-depth study of Richmond's life and work--Elizabeth N. Agnew examines the contributions of this important, if hitherto under-valued, woman to the field of charity and to its development into professional social work. Orphaned at a young age and largely self-educated, Richmond initially entered charity work as a means of self-support, but came to play a vital role in transforming philanthropy--previously seen as a voluntary expression of individual altruism--into a valid, organized profession. Her career took her from charity organization leadership in Baltimore and Philadelphia to an executive position with the prestigious Russell Sage Foundation in New York City. Richmond's progressive civic philosophy of social work was largely informed by the social gospel movement. She strove to find practical applications of the teachings of Christianity in response to the social problems that accompanied rapid industrialization, urbanization, and poverty. At the same time, her tireless efforts and personal example as a woman created an appealing, if ambiguous, path for other professional women. A century later her legacy continues to echo in social work and welfare reform.

I have added chapters on charity in relation to the growth of religious thought, and I have added a chapter on some of the questions raised by the recent Royal Commission on the Poor Laws and Relief of Distress. I have used the word charity in the title and frequently in the text. To many it may seem out-worn. It has suffered from constant circulation and hard usage. One would wish that it might be re-minted and re-issued, for there are many supremely noble associations imprinted on it, and it is the verbal abstract of a long history, in which religion, philosophy, social thought, administration, and personal endeavour have their place. It is expressive also of a conjunction of instincts, sentiments, and efforts which is well-nigh indispensable to social progress. For such a word there should still be room in the world of thought. I have not tried to write a book on recent charitable schemes and proposals. I have desired rather to follow out the growth of the conception of charity, and its expression in social life, and the principles which these suggest with regard to social service and obligation. As this phenomenon suggests, "middle class" is a category whose definition is not necessarily self-evident. In this book, historian Daniel Walkowitz approaches the question of what it means to be middle class from an innovative angle. Focusing on the history of social workers--who daily patrol the boundaries of class--he examines the changed and contested meaning of the term over the last one hundred years. Walkowitz uses the study of social workers to explore the interplay of race, ethnicity, and gender with class. He examines the trade union movement within the mostly female field of social work and looks at how a paradigmatic conflict between blacks and Jews in New York City during the 1960s shaped late-twentieth-century social policy concerning work, opportunity, and entitlements. In all, this is a story about the ways race and gender divisions in American society have underlain the confusion about the identity and role of the middle class.
