Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A step-by-step guide to preparing effective expository sermons Preparing Sermons from the Page to the Pulpit helps pastors move from study to sermon in seven clear steps. Pastors love studying God's word. But it can be difficult to take the things they've learned from exegesis and apply them to the soul of a congregation. Veteran pastor and seminary professor Wayne Baxter helps pastors move from study to sermon. He guides preachers on how to take their exegetical analysis of a Scripture passage and turn it into an effective expository sermon. Preachers and seminarians will be helped by Baxter's expertise as they grow in crafting compelling sermons.

Download or read book Her Preaching Body written by Amy Peed McCullough and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preacher's body is a tool for proclamation, a vehicle by which a sermon comes to life. Female preachers, engaged in a task not long their own, know well the added attention directed to their physicality. They can experience ordinary decisions about attire, accessories, hairstyles, and movement as complex, and occasionally precarious, choices around how to bring flesh to their sermons. They can also experience the extraordinary power of their bodies, when materiality weighs in on the message. McCullough explores the every-Sunday bodily decisions of contemporary female preachers, with an eye to uncovering the meanings about body, preaching, and God alive underneath. Ultimately, she argues for a renewed understanding of embodiment, in which one's living body, inescapably intertwined with her preaching, becomes the avenue for greater knowledge about how to preach and deeper insight into the faith professed.
Download or read book Rethinking Social Realism written by Stacy I. Morgan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social realist movement, with its focus on proletarian themes and its strong ties to New Deal programs and leftist politics, has long been considered a depression-era phenomenon that ended with the start of World War II. This study explores how and why African American writers and visual artists sustained an engagement with the themes and aesthetics of social realism into the early cold war-era--far longer than a majority of their white counterparts. Stacy I. Morgan recalls the social realist atmosphere in which certain African American artists and writers were immersed and shows how black social realism served alternately to question the existing order, instill race pride, and build interracial, working-class coalitions. Morgan discusses, among others, such figures as Charles White, John Wilson, Frank Marshall Davis, Willard Motley, Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, Elizabeth Catlett, and Hale Woodruff.
