Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thinking Machine (1907) is a short story collection by Jacques Futrelle. Published at the height of his career as a leading popular detective and science fiction writer, The Thinking Machine collects stories that originally appeared in such publications as The Saturday Evening Post and the Boston American. Celebrated for his brisk storytelling and mastery of suspense, Jacques Futrelle was lost at sea on April 15, 1912 while returning from Europe on the HMS Titanic. His wife, who survived the disaster, had his last book dedicated to “the heroes of the Titanic.” Professor Augustus S. F. X Van Dusen, Ph.D., LL.D., F.R.S., M.D., M.D.S is a man whose intellect is as exhaustive as his name. Having learned the game of chess just hours before, he defeated grandmaster Tchaichowsky using logic and reason alone, earning himself the nickname “The Thinking Machine.” Ever since that fateful day, Van Dusen, with the help of his trusted companion Hutchinson Hatch, is called to solve crimes, complete puzzles, and face challenges no normal man could possibly endure. In “The Problem of Cell 13,” Van Dusen argues that no feat is impossible when the human mind is involved. To prove his theory, he endeavors to escape from a notoriously brutal prison in just one week’s time. Presented alongside six other stories of mystery and adventure, “The Problem of Cell 13” stands out as one of the greatest detective and suspense tales of all time. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Jacques Futrelle’s The Thinking Machine is a classic of American detective fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book Woman with the Iceberg Eyes Oriana F Wilson

Download or read book Woman with the Iceberg Eyes Oriana F Wilson written by Katherine MacInnes and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Scott's expedition to the Antarctic, the most famous story of exploration in the world, played out on the great ice stage in the south. Oriana Wilson, wife of Scott's best friend and fellow explorer Dr Edward Wilson, was watching from the wings. She is the missing link between many of the notable polar names of the time and was allowed into a man's world at a time when the British suffragettes were marching. Oriana is the lens through which their secrets are revealed. What really happened both in the Antarctic and at home? Why did Scott's Terra Nova expedition nearly end in mutiny before it had even begun? Were the explorers' diaries as 'heroic' as they appeared to be? Only Oriana can tell. She began as a dutiful housewife but emerged as a scientist and collector in her own right, and was the first white woman to venture into the jungles of Darwin, Australia. Edward Wilson named Oriana Ridge, a little-known piece of Antarctica, after her on their tenth wedding anniversary. Oriana Wilson has been quiet for a century, but this biography gives her a voice and provides a unique insight into the early twentieth century through her clear, blue 'iceberg eyes'.

Download or read book Journey To The Promised Land written by Nancy Blackburn and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people in the story are Hebrew and they live on Love Boot Island. They make their living by manufacturing boots from the skins of animals and other materials. They called the boots 'Love Boots' and they worked night and day making them. The symbol of the love boot, a small pink heart, was placed at the top on the outside of each boot. The boots were shipped to all parts of the world, and the people bought and loved them because of their design, durability, comfort and colors. Males and females of all ages wore their boots to parties, school, and work. For whatever the occasion, there were boots. One day it quit raining. Days passed, and still there wasn't any rain. There was no water for the gardens and they dried up. The fresh green grass dried up and the land turned all brown. The trees did not have leaves on them anymore. Where the creeks and rivers once flowed, there was dried cracked mud. Everything was a sad sight because there wasn't any more water. The people were desperate as they could not work and eat any more. Mommies and daddies went to the grocery store, but there was no more food on the shelves or in the land and the people were hungry, as the 'Great Famine' covered the land. In order to save their 777 famine babies, read the story to find out what the Hebrew people did. This is a family story and third graders and over will enjoy the reading.

It was her savings from three years of part-time work. He thought in some way that she owed him this money. After all, he was her teacher. He was the one who needed to talk some sense into her. She was a dreamer who thought she could travel; she didnt even own a car. Cecil often advised her, You need to get married and have some kids. You dont need to dream about traveling all over the world. Will Willow have the strength to battle her older brother? Can she keep going toward her dream while he is blocking her?
