Download or read book A Necessary Coup written by Jason O'Neil and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel, President Werner, an independent with Libertarian concepts, loses the election during a Socialist revolution that gains the White House and the Congress. A series of unfunded welfare programs accelerates the downward spiral of the country into the worst Depression in history. President Werner, his family, and a host of high-level cabinet members and advisors are sequestered in a bunker somewhere in southeastern Pennsylvania. Over an eleven-month period, they plan a bloodless coup to regain control of America and govern with a compassionate Libertarian philosophy based upon limited programs for the needy and a dramatically reduced federal government, particularly aimed at eliminating disguised unemployment. A key element of the president’s plan is to woo billionaire inventor Matt Flynn and his wife, Heather, out of seclusion from their villa in Belize. As the Depression worsens, the Socialist president Bernie Cortez from California seeks Flynn’s advice in a secret session at Camp David. One of Flynn’s suggestions is for California to become a separate nation, a mecca for Socialists, with him as president. Matt also convinces wealthy industrialists to fund and develop massive infrastructure projects sorely needed in America to create tens of millions of jobs. Rare in history, the secretary of defense’s coup is successful without spilling the blood of any citizen, and President Werner returns to the Oval Office while former president Cortez flies to California, now called Calicopia. President Werner defends his programs before the House of Representatives and gains a vote of confidence to continue to restart the economy. In less than six months, real progress is made. People get back to work, banks reopen, and international trade resumes. Compassionate healthcare is offered to the public. Immigrants are vetted for citizenship while working on the infrastructure programs. And perhaps the most controversial element of the president’s plan is the reduction of one million federal civil servants and half a million in the military, all forced into the private sector. The novel ends with entrepreneur Flynn receiving his third Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Flynns retire to their new residence, called Beauvista, overlooking Thomas Jefferson’s classic Monticello. Flynn’s next challenge on behalf of his beloved republic is revealed in the light of a sunrise.

He also details China’s efforts to militarize the South China Sea, claim sovereignty over waters within their exclusive economic zone, and the U.S. Navy’s continuing efforts to counter these challenges to freedom of navigation.

Book Fools Rush In

Download or read book Fools Rush In written by Nina Munk and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every era has its merger; every era has its story. For the New Media age it was an even bigger disaster: the AOL-Time Warner deal. At the time AOL and Time Warner were considered a matchless combination of old media content and new media distribution. But very soon after the deal was announced things started to go bad—and then from bad to worse. Less than four years after the deal was announced, every significant figure in the deal -save the politically astute Richard Parsons—has left the company, along with scores of others. Nearly a $100 billion was written off and a stock that once traded at $100 now trades near $10. What happened? Where did it all go wrong? In this deeply sourced and deftly written book, Nina Munk gives us a window into the minds of two of the oddest men to ever run billion-dollar empires. Steve Case, the boy wonder who built AOL one free floppy disk at a time, was searching for a way out of the New Economy. Meanwhile Jerry Levin, who'd made his reputation as a visionary when he put HBO on satellite distribution, was searching for a monumental deal. These two men, more interested in their place in history than their personal fortunes, each thought they were out-smarting the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Patty Farmer was a little girl, she dreamed of living at the Plaza--just like Eloise of storybook fame. Decades later, she realized that dream when she moved into an apartment on the eighth floor of the famed hotel and became more passionate than ever about immersing herself in its history. She soon discovered that one of the most magical places within the Plaza now exists only in memory: the nightclub known as the Persian Room. For more than forty years, from 1934 to 1975, the Persian Room was the place to be in New York City. An unparalleled array of performers graced its stage--everyone from the incomparable Hildegarde and Kay Thompson to Julie Wilson, Andy Williams, Lainie Kazan, and Michelle Lee. And, though more than three decades have passed since the final ovation, there are many from both sides of the footlights who remember this extravagant nightclub with great fondness. To create this unique and memorable oral history, Farmer traveled far and wide to meet the Persian Room's most popular stars and collect their precious memories. Over the course of three years, these idols of the past and present opened their homes and hearts to her, relishing the opportunity to share cherished moments from their long careers. Many contributed photos and memorabilia from their personal collections as well, making The Persian Room Presents... a vivid journey through the stars elegant history. Among the many stars who generously gave their time are Andy Williams, Marge Champion, Polly Bergen, Diahann Carroll, Connie Stevens, Lesley Gore, Patti Page, Carol Lawrence, Michelle Lee, Lainie Kazan, Julie Wilson, Tony Butala, Tony Sandler, Celeste Holm, Kaye Ballard, Jack Jones, and Roslyn Kind. Don Dellair shared funny and touching tales of both Hildegarde and Liberace. Hilary Knight--the legendary illustrator who brought Eloise to life--spoke wistfully of Kay Thompson and Lisa Kirk. Each offered his or her own perspective on the club, but they all agreed on one thing: There was no place on Earth like the Persian Room and there never will be.

Book Ball Four

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Bouton
  • Publisher : Rosetta Books
  • Release : 2012-03-20
  • ISBN : 0795323247
  • Pages : 716 pages

Download or read book Ball Four written by Jim Bouton and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 50th Anniversary edition of “the book that changed baseball” (NPR), chosen by Time magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Non-Fiction” books. When Ball Four was published in 1970, it created a firestorm. Bouton was called a Judas, a Benedict Arnold, and a “social leper” for having violated the “sanctity of the clubhouse.” Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn’t true. Ballplayers, most of whom hadn’t read it, denounced the book. It was even banned by a few libraries. Almost everyone else, however, loved Ball Four. Fans liked discovering that athletes were real people—often wildly funny people. David Halberstam, who won a Pulitzer for his reporting on Vietnam, wrote a piece in Harper’s that said of Bouton: “He has written . . . a book deep in the American vein, so deep in fact that it is by no means a sports book.” Today Ball Four has taken on another role—as a time capsule of life in the sixties. “It is not just a diary of Bouton’s 1969 season with the Seattle Pilots and Houston Astros,” says sportswriter Jim Caple. “It’s a vibrant, funny, telling history of an era that seems even further away than four decades. To call it simply a ‘tell all book’ is like describing The Grapes of Wrath as a book about harvesting peaches in California.” Includes a new foreword by Jim Bouton's wife, Paula Kurman “An irreverent, best-selling book that angered baseball’s hierarchy and changed the way journalists and fans viewed the sports world.” —The Washington Post

Book The Sound of Music Story

Download or read book The Sound of Music Story written by Tom Santopietro and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 2, 1965, "The Sound of Music" was released in the United States and the love affair between moviegoers and the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was on. Rarely has a film captured the love and imagination of the moviegoing public in the way that "The Sound of Music" did as it blended history, music, Austrian location filming, heartfelt emotion and the yodeling of Julie Andrews into a monster hit. Now, Tom Santopietro has written the ultimate "Sound of Music" fan book with all the inside dope from behind the scenes stories of the filming in Austria and Hollywood to new interviews with Johannes von Trapp and others. Santopietro looks back at the real life story of Maria von Trapp, goes on to chronicle the sensational success of the Broadway musical, and recounts the story of the near cancellation of the film when the "Cleopatra" bankrupted 20th Century Fox. We all know that Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer played Maria and Captain Von Trapp, but who else had been considered? Tom Santopietro knows and will tell all while providing a historian's critical analysis of the careers of director Robert Wise and screenwriter Ernest Lehman, a look at the critical controversy which greeted the movie, the film's relationship to the turbulent 1960s and the super stardom which engulfed Julie Andrews. Tom Santopietro's "The Story of 'The Sound of Music'" is book for everyone who cherishes this American classic.
