Book The English Sixth Form

Download or read book The English Sixth Form written by Philip H. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, The English sixth form presents a comprehensive overview of the explicit characteristics and implications of sixth-form courses in an institutional context and in relationship to other organizations. The sixth form is an institution devoted mainly to providing an academic education for students who wish to remain in school beyond leaving age. Sixth forms are not self-contained institutions; they consist of the top class or classes in secondary schools receiving pupils from age of 11 or 12, or less frequently, 13 or 14. The book discusses crucial themes like the curriculum of the sixth form; the attitudes of sixth form teachers to the curriculum; the structure of the aims and objectives; influences and constraints; and the role of the universities. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of secondary education, school education, and education in general.

Book The Sixth An Essay in Education and Democracy

Download or read book The Sixth An Essay in Education and Democracy written by William Reid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in educational systems are inextricably linked with the social and political evolution of nations. Nowhere is this more clearly to be seen than in the history of the English sixth form. Originally published in 1982, this book, whose authors had been associated with a number of research projects into 16-19 education, traces the tradition of the sixth form from its origins in the public schools of the nineteenth century through to controversies at the time, over sixth form and tertiary colleges and the extension of 16-19 education to embrace youth opportunities programmes and other semi-vocational courses. It shows that ‘the sixth’ has not only been a significant element in its own right in the adjustment of English society to the challenge of democratic ideals, but has also played a key role in the evolution of secondary education from the endowed school of the nineteenth century, through the municipal grammar schools set up after the 1902 Education Act, to the comprehensive secondary schools of today. In fact, the fate and future of comprehensive schooling becomes fully understandable only through a study of the sixth form tradition which has shaped the activities of educationists and policy-makers over the last hundred years. The authors conclude that educational policy-making is both facilitated and constrained by the existence of enduring traditions stemming from the past: in fact, the work of policy-making lies precisely in the constructive reinterpretation of that inheritance. This book describes and clarifies the nature of the tradition of sixth form education which has been handed down to us, and its relation to democratic values and institutions.

Book excerpt: We all have black thoughts. It's just some of us act on them. A van driver with abduction and murder on his mind. An eleven-year-old girl snatched on her way home from ballet. A tortured reporter, happy to use her death and the terrifying reign of a child killer to help make his name... "Don't let the rather bland title put you off - this second novel by Dave Franklin is an impressive pacey read, spiced with ethical dilemmas as well as his earthy dialogue and humour." - Sunday Times "Franklin's first novel, Looking for Sarah Jane Smith, introduced his unique brand of bitter humour as he journeyed out of Wales into Aussie territory. In this new book, Franklin chooses to return to familiar territory, setting the novel in Portsmouth, on England's south coast. His raw-edged honesty and earthy humour combine to make a compelling portrayal of one man's undoing against a backdrop of murder, brutality and desperate love. It is a gritty and vicious novel with an unredeemable hero." - Post Newspapers This novel includes a FREE 3,500-word crime story, Camaraderie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many Western societies there is concern that children from less advantaged social backgrounds have limited aspirations, and are disproportionately unlikely to go to university. Children's Lives, Children's Futures explores how children in their first year of secondary school feel about school, its place in their lives and its role in their futures. The authors use child voice to look at the ways in which children are active constructors of their lives, and the implications this has for the alignment between education and ambition. The authors explore the nature of children's engagement with education, the choices and constraints they experience and the reasons some young people fail to take advantage of educational opportunities.

Book excerpt: It is well accepted that education needs to be equalised along gender lines. However, until the management of education is also gender sensitive, that content cannot expect to be effectively communicated. This is the premise of this groundbreaking book. It addresses gender issues and management practices in education, by critically examining both successes and failures drawn from a number of African countries. It proposes ways of improving the management of education to focus on women - who have hitherto been left out of the mainstream of educational and training practices. It throws a uniquely African light on an issue that goes to the heart of the process of democratisation. In order to empower the girl child in the new South Africa and in Africa, the patriarchal and parochial structures that exist within the African educational paradigm need to be broken down and replaced. This would address problems such as: why women are discouraged from certain fields of studies, like sciences; the effect that interactions in learning situations can have on the achievement and attainment of female students; and the critical necessity of educating and training girls in rural Africa. The book speaks to the heart of the administrative processes within the education framework and shows how the way classes are structured or materials selected needs to be adapted in order to correct the present imbalance. It was created and developed with the aim of seeking out the best education management practices, finding common analyses from these and using them to develop guidelines for future education management.

Download or read book Teen Spirits written by Dr Chris Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relating to both the practice of teaching media studies and also to theoretical questions within media and cultural studies, this study examines pop music, media studies and the micro-cultural politics of adolescence. It argues that media education has neglected pop music, and that, as something of enormous significance in the lives of young people, it merits a serious place in the field.; The author provides accounts of media studies in action, including detailed accounts of classroom discussions, interviews with students and teachers, examples of students' work and their biographical reflections. He links this to broader debates both within cultural studies and around the place of pop music in young people's lives.; "Teen Spirits" should be of interest to students of media and cultural studies, as well as to practicing teachers, and readers with an interest in questions of youth and identity.

Book Young Female and Black

Download or read book Young Female and Black written by Heidi Safia Mirza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young black women bear all the hallmarks of a fundamentally unequal society. They do well at school, contribute to society, are good efficient workers yet, as a group they consistently fail to secure the economic status and occupational prestige they deserve. This book presents a serious challenge to the widely held myth that young black women consistently underachieve both at school and in the labour market. In a comparative study of research and writig from America, Britain and the Caribbean Young, Female and Black re-examines our present understanding of what is meant by educational underachievement, the black family and, in particular, black womanhood in Britain.
