Book excerpt: “You’re not wanted in Hattan’s Point,” Matt Brennan was told moments after arriving in town. “There’s trouble here and men are picking sides.” But Matt decided he wasn’t going anywhere. Not until he found out what the dispute was about, and not before he got to know Moira Maclaren. She considered him nothing more than a drifting ranch hand, but Matt was determined to prove her wrong. To do so, he’d have to solve a mystery that was at the center of the growing violence in Hattan’s Point–a secret that could make a man rich . . . or dead. Probably dead.

Book excerpt: George Manville Fenn's 'The Silver Canyon: A Tale of the Western Plains' is a gripping Western novel that captures the essence of the American frontier. Fenn's vivid descriptions of the untamed wilderness and the hardships faced by pioneers bring the story to life. The narrative is filled with action-packed scenes of gunfights, horseback chases, and encounters with Native American tribes, immersing the reader in the rugged landscape of the Western Plains. Fenn's writing style is characterized by its fast-paced plot and authentic portrayal of the era, making 'The Silver Canyon' a compelling read for fans of Western fiction. George Manville Fenn, a prolific Victorian author, drew inspiration for 'The Silver Canyon' from his own experiences traveling through the American West. His keen eye for detail and deep understanding of frontier life shine through in the novel, adding authenticity to the story. Fenn's background as an educator also informs the moral themes woven into the narrative, making 'The Silver Canyon' not just an entertaining adventure, but also a thought-provoking exploration of courage, friendship, and survival. I highly recommend 'The Silver Canyon: A Tale of the Western Plains' to readers looking for a thrilling Western adventure that delves into the hardships and triumphs of life on the frontier. Fenn's masterful storytelling and rich historical detail make this novel a must-read for anyone fascinated by the American West.

Many of his novels were written with young adults in mind. His final book was his biography of a fellow writer for juveniles, George Alfred Henty. Fenn was largely self-educated, teaching himself French, German and Italian. After studying at Battersea Training College for Teachers (1851-1854), he became the master of a national school at Alford, Lincolnshire. He later became a printer, editor and publisher of some short-lived periodicals. Fenn's first story for boys, Hollowdell Grange, appeared in 1867. It was followed by a succession of other novels for juveniles and adults. He also wrote for the theatre and authored many historical fiction novels.

Book excerpt: A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost forty years ago, when my fiction was being published exclusively in ‘pulp’ western magazines, I wrote several novel-length stories, which my editors called ‘magazine novels.’ In creating them, I became so involved with my characters that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared became collector’s items. Pleased as I was about how I brought the characters and their adventures to life in the pages of the magazines, I still wanted the reader to know more about my people and why they did what they did. So, over the years, I revised and expanded these magazine works into fuller-length novels that I published in paperback under other titles. “These particular early magazine versions of my books have long been a source of great speculation and curiosity among many of my readers, so much so of late, that I’m now pleased to collect three of them in book form for the first time. “I hope you enjoy them.”
