Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Music of Central Asia surveys the rich and diverse musical life of a region that was once at the center of the trans-Eurasian Silk Road trade and that has now reemerged as a crucial arena of global geopolitics. This beautiful and informative volume offers a resource for Central Asians to learn about the musical heritage of their region and a detailed introduction to this heritage for readers and listeners worldwide. The Music of Central Asia balances "insider" and "outsider" perspectives with contributions by 27 authors from 14 countries. A companion website provides access to some 175 audio and video examples, listening guides and study questions, and transliterations and translations of the performed texts. The generously illustrated text is supplemented with boxes and side bars, musician profiles, and an illustrated glossary of musical instruments. The Music of Central Asia targets a broad, non-specialist readership, while specialists will find it an indispensable resource. The book is divided into four parts: an overview of the region's music and musical instruments; sections on "The Nomadic World" and "The World of Sedentary-Dwellers," which explore music and musical life in the context of Central Asia's two great axes of civilization; and "Central Asia in the Age of Globalization," whose focus is the future of the past, or how musical heritage is being revitalized and reimagined in the contested cultural landscape of contemporary Central Asia. The Music of Central Asia can be read systematically to build comprehensive knowledge about interlinked topics—or used as a handy reference on specific musical styles, repertoires, and traditions. For instructors, the book's 35 chapters offer ample material for a semester-long course, while groups of chapters can serve as a module in courses devoted to broader topics in music, history, and culture.

Download or read book The Silk Road written by Tim Winter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Evocative and enigmatic, the Silk Road occupies a unique place in contemporary culture and international affairs. Across the world, it has captured the imagination as a story of camel caravans crossing desert and mountain, of precious goods moving between East and West, and of ideas, religions and technologies migrating across land and sea. As China seeks to "revive" the Silk Roads for the twenty-first century, this compelling, yet poorly understood, narrative of history now serves as a platform for building trade, diplomatic, infrastructure and geopolitical connections. "The Silk Road: Connecting Histories and Futures" is the first book to critically investigate the merits and problems of this fabled geocultural narrative of history, and map out the role it plays in international affairs. Four thematic sections trace its rise to global fame as a domain of scholarship and foreign policy, a celebration of peace and internationalism, and how it created dreams of exploration and grand adventure. China's Health Silk Road and civilizational politics are among the themes discussed that open up the Silk Roads as a space for critical enquiry"--

Book The Long Game on the Silk Road

Download or read book The Long Game on the Silk Road written by S. Frederick Starr and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that American and European policies toward Central Asia and the Caucasus suffer from both conceptual and structural impediments. It traces the framework of Western policies to the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which resulted in the stovepiping of relations into political, economic, and democracy categories – and in often uncoordinated or contradictory policies. While the authors embrace the goal of promoting human rights and democracy, they argue that the antagonistic methods adopted to advance this goal have proven counter-productive. They propose that Western governments work with the regional states rather than on or against them; and that instead of focusing directly on political systems, policies should focus on developing the quality of governance and help build institutions that will be building blocks of rule of law and democracy in the long term. The authors also argue that Western leaders have largely failed to grasp the significance of this region, relegated it to a subordinate status and thus damaging western interests. The development of sovereign, economically strong, and effectively self-governing states in the Caucasus and Central Asia is an important goal in its own right; the book stresses the importance of a region where the development and preservation of secular statehood could become a model for the entire Muslim world.

Book Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road

Download or read book Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road written by Xiao Mei and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises fifteen selected papers in five chapters from the 27th ICTM Colloquium on Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road. It testifies to how human cultures are never created in seclusion. The richness of drums and drum ensembles, including their repertoires, are also connected to long-term exchanges in military affairs, trades, and religions of various peoples. Despite the obvious prevalence of drums among all peoples around the world, their understanding and their repertoires vary due to different contexts. The studies of music originating on the Silk Road presented in this volume pay particular attention to the multiple flows of knowledge between numerous distinctive regions in the narrower geographical and temporal scope.

Book Central Asia in 1993 When the Silk Road Reopened

Download or read book Central Asia in 1993 When the Silk Road Reopened written by Richard Pomfret and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Christmas Day 1991 the Soviet Union disappeared, and five unprepared Central Asian republics became nation states. In December 1992 the author was seconded to the United Nations as an economic advisor to the five countries and to Azerbaijan and Mongolia, which were also in transition from central planning. This book tells the story of the following year in Central Asia. The Central Asian oases were key points on the silk road from China to West Asia and to Europe, until maritime explorers opened up sea routes that led to several centuries of decline in the region. Conquered by Russia in the nineteenth century and under Communism isolated from the world in the twentieth century, the early 1990s brought dramatic new challenges for the people in the midst of economic and political chaos. The rich history, Islamic traditions and uncertain future made 1993 an interesting year in Central Asia.

Book The New Silk Road Grand Strategy and the Maghreb

Download or read book The New Silk Road Grand Strategy and the Maghreb written by Mordechai Chaziza and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining Chinese-North African relations through the lens of President Xi Jinping’s Silk Road grand strategy, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of emerging strategic and economic partnerships in the Maghreb region. China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in modern history. This book argues that the BRI framework is vital in understanding the shifting balance of power within the Maghreb region and between the North African countries, the EU, the US, and China. It is argued that an increasing interdependence can be observed between China and the Maghreb in energy, construction, infrastructure building, political ties, trade and investments, financial integration, people-to-people bonds, and defence. The author reveals the complexities and challenges of Beijing's BRI, exploring how this synergy will shape the Maghreb in the future. Additionally, the book argues that the balance of global politics will be critically affected by these emerging partnerships. The book will be of particular interest to students and academics focused on interstate dynamics and foreign policy in the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region, but in its global ramifications the book is also much-needed reading for those working in International Relations, Politics and Economics, and Public Policy.
