Book excerpt: One woman proves that painfully shy children can become successful, even when raised by an emotionally unstable mother. In The Silent Speak Volumes, a mother responds to her grown child's question: "Why don't we know more about your childhood, Mom?" This sweet yet painfully honest memoir examines one woman's formative years, in which her mother's words and actions were not always rooted in loving guidance. Despite her resulting low self-esteem and crippling shyness, the author is able to overcome the emotional manipulation of her past in order to find success and happiness. Her memoir was written for her children, but it's a story that will resonate with everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical investigation into the use of psychotropic drugs to pacify and control inmates and other captives in the vast U.S. prison, military, and welfare systems For at least four decades, U.S. prisons and jails have aggressively turned to psychotropic drugs—antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives, and tranquilizers—to silence inmates, whether or not they have been diagnosed with mental illnesses. In Silent Cells, Anthony Ryan Hatch demonstrates that the pervasive use of psychotropic drugs has not only defined and enabled mass incarceration but has also become central to other forms of captivity, including foster homes, military and immigrant detention centers, and nursing homes. Silent Cells shows how, in shockingly large numbers, federal, state, and local governments and government-authorized private agencies pacify people with drugs, uncovering patterns of institutional violence that threaten basic human and civil rights. Drawing on publicly available records, Hatch unearths the coercive ways that psychotropics serve to manufacture compliance and docility, practices hidden behind layers of state secrecy, medical complicity, and corporate profiteering. Psychotropics, Hatch shows, are integral to “technocorrectional” policies devised to minimize public costs and increase the private profitability of mass captivity while guaranteeing public safety and national security. This broad indictment of psychotropics is therefore animated by a radical counterfactual question: would incarceration on the scale practiced in the United States even be possible without psychotropics?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the controversial motion pictures written and directed by the independent filmmaker Kim Ki-duk, one of the most acclaimed Korean auteurs in the English-speaking world. Propelled by underdog protagonists who can only communicate through shared corporeal pain and extreme violence, Kim's graphic films have been classified by Western audiences as belonging to sensationalist East Asian "extreme" cinema, and Kim has been labeled a "psychopath" and "misogynist" in South Korea. Drawing upon both Korean-language and English-language sources, Hye Seung Chung challenges these misunderstandings, recuperating Kim's oeuvre as a therapeutic, yet brutal cinema of Nietzschean ressentiment (political anger and resentment deriving from subordination and oppression). Chung argues that the power of Kim's cinema lies precisely in its ability to capture, channel, and convey the raw emotions of protagonists who live on the bottom rungs of Korean society. She provides historical and postcolonial readings of victimization and violence in Kim's cinema, which tackles such socially relevant topics as national division in Wild Animals and The Coast Guard and U.S. military occupation in Address Unknown. She also explores the religious and spiritual themes in Kim's most recent works, which suggest possibilities of reconciliation and transcendence.

Book INANIMATE VERSES FROM THE SILENT WORLD

Download or read book INANIMATE VERSES FROM THE SILENT WORLD written by Vrinda Batra and published by JEC PUBLICATION. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the moment we are born, we are connected to a multitude of people. We are also supported and comforted by various inanimate objects, such as our clothes, toys, cameras, phones, televisions, pillows and more. Throughout different phases of our lives, people come and go. However, the ones that are always there, the inanimate constants, are often neglected. This book highlights the emotions of these objects, which, though filled with feelings, cannot speak. They often end up lying in some secluded corner of our homes, sometimes being thrown away, if broken or discarded as trash. Just like with humans, if we understand their feelings, life would no longer feel lonely or stressful. If we revisit the things that once fascinated us, they would bring us nothing but pure happiness. Life would be much better if we understand the importance of these inanimate objects. The ending of the book leads towards a confession and a realisation by humans for these objects. It is rightly said that, inanimate objects are the guardians of our personal history, keeping safe the fragments of our lives that we cherish most. Even without a voice, the objects around us speak volumes about who we are and where we've been.
