Book The Siege of Boston Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Siege of Boston Classic Reprint written by Allen French and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Boston In writing this book I have endeavored to produce a brief and readable account of the Siege of Boston, and of the events which brought it about. These were, of course, parts of a larger history, the connection with which I have carefully indicated. My main endeavor, nevertheless, has been to treat my subject as a single organic series of events. To select the more interesting and significant masses of detail, and properly to coordinate them, has not been an easy task. The minor incidents were conditioned by the scale of the book; the result, I hope, is fluency and a more evident connection between the larger events. So far as possible, I have relied upon contemporary statements. But no writer on the Siege can fail to acknowledge his deep obligations to the "History of the Siege" by Richard Frothingham. Book excerpt: The Siege of Boston by Allen French The Siege of Boston was the culmination of a series of events which will always be of importance in the history of America. From the beginning of the reign of George the Third, the people of the English colonies in the new world found themselves at variance with their monarch, and nowhere more so than in Massachusetts. Since the New England people were fitted by their temperament and history to take the lead in the struggle, at their chief town naturally took place the more important incidents. These, which were often dramatic, had nevertheless a political cause and significance which link them in a rising series that ended in a violent outbreak and the eleven months' leaguer. Book Boston and the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boston and the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by National Park Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston and the American Revolution Within two decades of 1750, however, Bostonians were resisting the policies of the British government. Quickly, their resistance turned to revolution. In the span of a generation, they came to see themselves and their society in a new way. Today the sites of Boston National Historical Park include the scenes of critical events in the story: resolutions in defense of colonial rights made in town meetings at Faneuil Hall; the Boston Massacre in front of the Old State House; mass assemblies at Old South Meeting House that preceded the Boston Tea Party; the battle at Bunker Hill and the occupation of Dorchester Heights. What brought Americans to these sites on these occasions? The answer lies partly in the acts of British authorities, Whose policies aroused a fervent opposition. It lies, too, in the townspeople's most basic beliefs and cherished ideals, most especially a notion of liberty that was precious not only to 18th-century Bostonians but ultimately to other Americans as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonials: Being a Narrative of Events Chiefly Connected With the Siege and Evacuation of the Town of Boston in New England For ages the great lakes of North America lay in their gloomy solitudes, the garb of nature clothing their endless shores. Upon the waters of those inland seas, within the depths of the enormous forests, the petty mutterings of barbaric wars were lost. Though the record of savage migrations remained in human memory, not even a pile of stones marked an historic spot. But at last the white man came into the region, and a new epoch began. The vast surface of the forest, the long reaches of the shores, were still almost the same; but here and there was a tiny gap in the tree-tops, here and there were the charred ruins of buildings, here and there the pick and shovel had made trenches and mounds which would remain for many years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rebels, or Boston Before the Revolution Thus much for the period I have chosen. How faithfully it has been portrayed, must be left to critics less merciful than myself. Many will complain that I have dwelt too much on political scenes, familiar to every one who reads our history; and others, on the contrary, will say that the character of the book is quite too tranquil for its title. I might mention many doubts and fears, still more important; but I prefer silently to trust this humble volume to that futurity which no one can foresee, and every one can dread. Download or read book After the Siege written by Jacqueline Barbara Carr and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2005 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 1770s, Boston's townspeople were struggling to rebuild a community devastated by British occupation, the ensuing siege by the Continental Army, and the Revolutionary war years. After the British attacked Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, Boston's population plummeted from 15,000 civilians to less than 3,000, property was destroyed and plundered, and the economy was on the verge of collapse. How the once thriving colonial seaport and its demoralized inhabitants recovered in the wake of such demographic, physical, and economic ruin is the subject of this compelling and well-researched work. Drawing on extensive primary sources, including ward tax assessors' Taking Books, church records, census records, birth and marriage records, newspaper accounts, and town directories, Jacqueline Barbara Carr brings to life Boston's remarkable rebirth as a flourishing cosmopolitan city at the dawn of the nineteenth century. She examines this watershed period in the city's social and cultural history from the perspective of the town's ordinary men and women, both white and African American, re-creating the determined community of laborers, artisans, tradesmen, mechanics, and seamen who demonstrated an incredible perseverance in reshaping their shattered town and lives. Filled with fascinating and dramatic stories of hardship, conflict, continuity, and change, the engaging narrative describes how Boston rebounded in less than twenty-five years through the efforts of inhabitants who survived the ordeal of the siege, those who fled British occupation and returned after the war, and the influx of citizens from many different places seeking new opportunities in the growing city. Carr explores the complex forces that drove Boston's transformation, taking into consideration such topics as the built environment and the town's neighborhoods, the impact of town government on peoples' lives, the day-to-day trials of restoring and managing the community, the effect of the postwar economy on work and daily life, and forms of leisure and theater entertainment.

They had been among the throng Who, in open defiance of the law, had made prisoner of Giles Hendricks; tarred and feathered, and then carried him in a cart through the principal streets of the city to the Liberty Tree, because he had given evidence regarding the smuggling of wine from Rhode Island. Here under the old elm he had been forced to swear he would never be guilty of a like crime in the future, and only then was allowed to go free, wear ing his closely fitting and decidedly uncomfortable garment of tar.
