Book excerpt: Created in the Emperor's own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny--they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent has been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy. Gathered within this anthology are four novellas focusing on some of the mightiest warriors and leaders that mankind has ever known--Fulgrim, Ferrus Manus, Lion El'Jonson and the twin primarchs Alpharious and Omegon--and the roles that they may have yet to play in war which threatens to change the face of the Imperium forever.

Book Alexander s Campaigns in Sind and Baluchistan and the Siege of the Brahmin Town of Harmatelia

Download or read book Alexander s Campaigns in Sind and Baluchistan and the Siege of the Brahmin Town of Harmatelia written by Pierre Herman Leonard Eggermont and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1975 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In quest of the identification and geographical location of the Brahmin town of Harmatelia, known for Alexander's siege which became a favourite literary theme throughout the Hellenistic age, the author has studied this minor problem within the much wider context of the historico-geographic conditions of Sind and Baluchistan about 500 B.C. - A.D. 25. Starting from a well-balanced assessment of the data supplied by western classic authors as well as by Indian and other oriental sources, he has compared the views held by General Cunningham's contemporaries with the fresh evidence we have at our disposal nowadays, such as the data collected by Aurel Stein during his archaeological reconnaissances in Baluchistan, the numerous notes which W.W. Tarn has inserted in his papers and books on Alexander the Great, and the recent geomorphological studies by the German geologist H. Wilhelmy on the Indus river basin in general, and the Indus delta in particular. An interesting feature of this book is the new method the author has developed. His interpretation is based on what he calls the Law of the strings of geographical names, viz. the principle according to which the early geographers listed the toponyms of towns, tribes, and mountains.

Book The Serpent and the Swan

Download or read book The Serpent and the Swan written by Boria Sax and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Serpent and the Swan is a history and analysis of animal bride tales from antiquity to the present. The animal bride tale, the author argues, is an enduring expression of humankind's need to remain close to and a part of nature. Boria Sax traces the idea of the animal bride through history by drawing upon legends and literary works from throughout the world. He pays particular attention to Eurasian sources which support his thesis that the animal bride theme originated among the serpent cults of Mesopotamia and southeastern Europe. Through time, the details of the animal bride theme changed as a result of mankind's changing perceptions of the natural world. In general, this study is an account of myths and beliefs that have surrounded animals--and women--during the rise of modern humankind. The Serpent and the Swan identifies and explains images of the animal bride that pervade, enliven, and enrich our culture. The bride becomes Eve taking an apple from the serpent, Medea casting spells, Cinderella riding to the royal ball in a pumpkin coach, and the Little Mermaid rising from the waves. The Author: Boria Sax, who holds a doctorate in German and intellectual history, is the author of The Frog King and The Parliament of Animals, among other books.
