Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What the hell was that?" She demanded fiercely, striding across the room in pursuit. Her negligee was torn, and hung loose about her stomach. She pulled it off impatiently, uncaring that she was totally naked. He turned, slowly, his back ramrod straight. He seemed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. "Sex, Miranda. That was sex." He sounded bored. As though he were explaining a simple concept to a child. "You can't just.... I mean... I haven't seen you in days. I haven't heard from you. And you just... walk in here... and expect me to... for us to..." He crossed his arms over his chest, refusing to let her confusion wear him down. The more tenderness he felt for this woman, the harder he had to be with her. For she was not someone he could ever become involved with, other than sexually, and he would not give her the wrong impression. "Of course I can, Miranda. This was our deal, remember?" Miranda travels to the conservative Kingdom of Fasiya with a simple enough goal in mind. Her best friend Mastepha is in trouble and needs money - money she has spades of in her Fasiyan apartment. Unfortunately, Mastepha happens to be the sister of the all powerful Sheikh Radiz Zamin, and he doesn't look kindly on the attempted theft. Miranda can't reveal the truth about the reason she's come to Fasiya in place of her friend - if Radiz discovers his sister is pregnant to some British barman, he'll be furious! Radiz suspects the beautiful thief has something to do with Mastepha - they're a similar age and herald from the same city, after all. He hopes she might even be able to tell him something about the sister who has increasingly become a stranger to him. Unfortunately, Miranda is intractable, and refuses to reveal anything about her motivations - and she certainly won't acknowledge any connection to the wayward royal. Despite her denials, a sixth sense convinces Radiz that she knows far more than she's letting on. Faced with the option of leaving her to rot in a Fasiyan prison for the rest of her life, or attempting to elicit the truth from Miranda using whatever interrogation techniques are at his disposal, Radiz opts for the latter. A complicated web of seduction, desire, and secrecy unfolds around them. Only it can't last. Miranda has lied to Radiz in a way he'll never be able to forgive, and the only option she has left is to flee his Kingdom and try, with all her heart, to forget the way he makes her feel in his arms.

Book excerpt: For six months in 2006, a charismatic young U.S. Army captain and Arab linguist named Travis Patriquin unleashed a diplomatic and cultural charm offensive upon the Sunni Arab sheiks of Anbar province, the heart of darkness of the Iraqi insurgency. He galvanized American support for the “Sunni Awakening,” the tribal revolt against Al Qaeda that spread through the province and eventually across Iraq, a turning point that led to dramatically lower levels of violence in the country. The Awakening may not have succeeded without Patriquin, who was so beloved by Iraqis that they adopted him into their tribes and loved him as a brother. This is the true story of a man who loved Iraq, and a soldier who helped engineer the turning point of the Iraq War. It is the story of America’s T.E. Lawrence—Travis Patriquin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the US Army's Urban Warfare Specialist, this book is the definitive look at how urban warfare tactics have evolved providing invaluable lessons for the US and British Armies of the future. Throughout history cities have been at the center of warfare, from sieges to street-fighting, from peace-keeping to coups de mains. Sun Tzu admonished his readers of The Art of War that the lowest realization of warfare was to attack a fortified city. Indeed, although strategists have advised against it across the millennia, armies and generals have been forced nonetheless to attack and defend cities, and victory has required that they do it well. In Concrete Hell, Louis DiMarco has provided a masterful study of the brutal realities of urban warfare, of what it means to seize and hold a city literally block by block. Such a study could not be more timely. We live in an increasingly urbanizing world, a military unprepared for urban operations is unprepared for tomorrow. Di Marco masterfully studies the successes and failures of past battles in order to provide lessons for today's tacticians.

Book Twice Armed

Download or read book Twice Armed written by R Alan King, Lt. R. Alan King and published by . This book was released on with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lieutenant Colonel R. Alan King and his 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion became operations central after the collapse of the Iraqi army and the beginning of the occupation of Iraq in March 2003. While under his command, these civil affairs and psychological operations soldiers were not content to stay in secure offices inside the green zone. Instead, they knew that to do their job they had to get out and make "house calls," and in the process the 422nd became the most highly decorated civil affairs unit in the history of the U.S. Army, with twenty-one individual awards for valor and five purple hearts. King was particularly well-suited for the new kind of war being waged in Iraq. Armed with his rifle, a Palm Pilot that contained an English translation of the Koran, and an informed and nuanced respect for Middle Eastern culture, King and his team captured or arranged the surrender of almost a dozen of the most-wanted villains from Saddam's regime, including several from the famous deck of cards. He became privy to secrets as weighty as those of Iraq's nuclear weapons program and as light as those behind the outlandish press briefings of the infamous Baghdad Bob. Twice Armed - its title is taken from Plato's maxim We are twice armed if we fight with faith - provides a compelling view of the Iraq war, and the experience from the Iraqi perspective, from one of the war's most decorated officers. The regional expertise that helped King negotiate with clerics and sheikhs also informs his provocative opinions about what it will take to win the battle for the hearts and minds of Iraq, an ancient, mystifying, and deeply religious culture. King has been compared to the legendary T. E. Lawrence, with the press dubbing him “Alan of Arabia,” and this book sheds light on a new and necessary component of modern warfare, one that goes far beyond artillery and armor, and instead tells King's story of cultural interaction and respect that yielded results in his area at the beginning of the war. A trenchant and necessary look at how the winning of the hearts and minds of people in Iraq is as crucial to success as the winning of tactical military goals.
