Book excerpt: My name is Snow. I am a killer. The world is a cruel place, and I've learned that the only way to survive is to kill. When I was born, someone dumped me in the snow to die. But I didn't. The snow was innocent, just like I was. It could have frozen me to death. Instead, it comforted me, held me gently, like a blanket. The snow is my family. Not people. People tried to destroy me. Again and again. I had to start killing them first. I enjoy it. I take pleasure in watching them die. I have murdered everyone who tried to hurt me. Or hurt the person I love. Except for one man. Benjamin. He always got away. And now he's captured me. Or so he thinks. Maybe I've captured him. Maybe I'm exactly where I want to be. Have you ever seen gallons of bright red blood staining the freshly fallen, pure white snow?I guarantee it's the prettiest thing you'll ever see.

Book excerpt: Love cannot resist an unbreakable heart… After losing the love of his life, Liam of Clan Kincaid is sent in service for what his uncle considers betrayal. He regrets the harsh words he had with his uncle, and so Liam gives himself to the battle-weary king, Robert the Bruce, and vows to mend his tarnished reputation. That would be easy if not for the lass who insists he aids her. Makenna Mackenzie has lived through hell, her home and land taken, by the English. All she wants is to take vengeance against the man who cut off her ear and destroyed everything held dear in her heart. The only way to achieve her goal is to plead with the legendary king’s guard. She wants them to train her to be a mercenary like them so she can use her sword to the fullest when she finally meets her enemy. Neither of them ever thought to find one another since their betrothal never came to fruition. But when Makenna asks for his aid, Liam agrees with one condition−that she marry him. Makenna has conditions of her own, and they make a pact to help each other. Their agreement leads them on a dangerous mission, one of which might be the end of them both. Liam finds himself in a quandary because Makenna is not the forthright lass he deems her to be. But his UNBREAKABLE HEART can withstand her, can’t it?

Book excerpt: Our stories are a gift to you. In a world where victims of trauma continue to silently struggle, Healing Hearts: Shatterproof makes the truth audible. Each of the fourteen authors in this anthology reach into painful memories not for the sake of reliving them, but rather to share how in places of great sorrow and suffering, a most noble courage can awaken. To demonstrate that joy can be found even after the darkest of days. To show how truth-telling can break a person free from pain and lead to healing of heart and soul. In these pages, you'll encounter stories of discrimination, abuse, loss, mental health struggles, and addiction, stories of people forced into secrecy and invisibility. Despite the best efforts of circumstances, abusers, or a culture that would have them stay silent, the writers in this collection did not disappear. Instead, they found themselves to be courageous, resilient and powerful. They also found a true and essential part of themselves that could not be destroyed, a part that is, as it turns out, shatterproof. These stories are their gift to you and a reminder of the essential, indestructible heart in each of us.

Book The Unbreakable Heart of Oliva Denaro

Download or read book The Unbreakable Heart of Oliva Denaro written by Viola Ardone and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of The Children’s Train comes an unforgettable coming-of-age novel, set in 1960s Sicily and based on a true story, of how a young Sicilian girl defied centuries old tradition to win the right to control her own life. As provincial Sicily bursts into life with the jaunty hum of pop music and the heady scent of wild jasmine, fifteen-year-old Oliva Denaro dares to challenge convention, ignoring the taunts of peers, her mother’s scolds, and her own changing body. Spirited and carefree, she loves to run until her lungs burst: to feel the strength of her lithe limbs, to relish the freedom she cherishes, to honor the friends forced by propriety to conform. Though she knows she cannot stop growing up, Oliva resists the future. To her, becoming a woman means denying oneself. But adulthood comes all too quickly when the baker’s son sets his sights on her. Offered a blood orange, Oliva—haunted by her mother’s warning, “a girl who smiles has already said yes”—spurns the fruit. Yet, this act sets into motion an unwanted courtship that will force Oliva to fight for the right to choose her own path, even though the odds of winning are steep. While America and Europe are in the throes of social change, Sicily fiercely clings to its rigid traditions, including the custom of fuitina –by which kidnappings could be disguised as elopements– which is accepted and enshrined in law. Oliva’s battle for independence is based on the real-life story that would ultimately rock Italy–capturing the attention of both the Pope and the nation’s president—and transform life for all Italians. The Unbreakable Heart of Oliva Denaro is a lyrical tale of staggering beauty. Viola Ardone beautifully evokes a land and its people, customs, and passions, and breathes life into an unforgettable girl in all her intensity, desperation, perseverance, and bravery. Alternating between the lighthearted and the tragic, it is a classic coming-of-age novel—powerful, spellbinding, and liberating. Translated from the Italian by Clarissa Botsford

Book Storied Health and Illness

Download or read book Storied Health and Illness written by Jill Yamasaki and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health and illness are storied experiences that necessarily entail personal, cultural, and political complexities. For all of us, communicating about health and illness requires a continuous negotiation of these complexities and a delicate balance between what we learn about the biology of disease from providers and our own very personal, subjective experiences of being ill. Storied Health and Illness brings together dozens of noteworthy scholars, both established and emerging, in a provocative collection that embraces narrative ways of knowing to think about, analyze, and reconsider our own and others’ health beliefs, behaviors, and communication. Comprehensive content reflects the editors’ substantial research in integrative health, narrative care, and innovative ways of improving well-being and quality of life in personal relationships, healthcare, the workplace, and community settings. Unique narrative approaches to the study of health communication include: • 14 chapters written by 22 contributors who use engaging stories from their own research or personal experience to introduce and ground foundational communication concepts in healthcare, health promotion, community support, organizational wellness, and other health-related sites of interest. • Compelling stories of individuals living with the inherent challenges and unexpected opportunities of mental illness, addiction, aging, cancer, dialysis, sexual harassment, miscarriage, obesity, alopecia, breastfeeding, health threats to immigrant workers, developmental differences, and youth gun violence. • 36 Health Communication in Action (HCIA) sidebars that highlight applied research of innovative health communication scholars in their own words and then prompt readers to think more deeply about their own perspectives and experiences. • Theorizing Practice boxes that encourage readers to reflect on stories that describe significant experiences in their own and others’ lives as they consider assumptions and enlarge their viewpoints in previously unimagined ways.

Book Unbreakable Hearts A True Heart wrenching Story About Victory Forfeited

Download or read book Unbreakable Hearts A True Heart wrenching Story About Victory Forfeited written by Earl Dusty Trimmer and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earl “Dusty” Trimmer relates with both skill and personal experience events surrounding our most forgetable and misunderstood war in America’s history. He brings it all home with his down-to-earth style and considerable knowledge. In Unbreakable Hearts, Dusty dives into the Vietnamese history and culture and skillfully brings the reader into understanding our Vietnamese enemy’s amazing resolve. He brilliantly explains the evolution of our Vietnamese enemy over hundreds of years of invasions and wars. Always defending their country to remain free became an art. In Chapter 7, Dusty describes the Vietnamese women fighters as “Hellcats.” My own experience with the formidable Vietnamese Viet Cong women’s skills and expertise closely mirrors Dusty’s. Hooch girls could plant booby traps in a GI’s hooch with a skill and savvy they were forced to learn during decades of on-the-job training in continuous wars with unwelcomed invaders. My own Military Police experience after leaving the infantry revealed these incidents vividly. In later chapters, Dusty moves into our own veterans’ profound resolve and toughness. North Vietnam’s famed General Giap called us “an honorable enemy.” One could suggest from this writing that our enemy taught us well. We did things in the Vietnam War the average person would have to go to the movies to believe. After reading Trimmer’s descriptions, I must conclude that indeed this book could be one for the movie industry. Dusty Trimmer brings to life our days and nights living and fighting in these foreboding jungle warfare conditions. After reading this fine work and reflecting on my own experiences, I cut away a little more of the pain. Pride swells for having served with all of these wonderful veterans of the Vietnam War. Pain for our terrible losses. For myself, these experiences culminated in wisdom I would otherwise have failed to achieve. God bless Dusty for telling our story. Forward march, Brothers!

Aaron's poetry covers a wide range of topics, from the ups and downs of love to taking one step at a time to get one's life back on track. He has created his poetry collection with the hope that at least one poem may have life breathed into it through the pairing of his lyrics with the right music.
