Book Value Construction in the Creative Economy

Download or read book Value Construction in the Creative Economy written by Rachel Granger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a critical and integrative analysis of value as it pertains to different aspects of creative and cultural industries. The notion of 'value' – a frequently used but rarely considered term – is deconstructed and considered as a spatial and structural impact, an active resource and process, and as soft institutions and embodied forms which collectively create a space through which value is constructed and negotiated. This book consists of three main sections: normative valuation, value and transformation from interactions and process, and embodied value. Together the contributions assess what value means in the creative and cultural industries, how it is constructed and added through process, and the way in which it is embodied in people and shaped through and by social space. Especially relevant for postgraduate study and research in the creative and cultural industries where critical studies are key, this book is also relevant for multiple disciplines which occupy the creative and cultural fields.

Download or read book Police service strength written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Home Affairs Committee says that, faced with the prospect of funding cuts, the police service will have to fundamentally re-think the way in which it provides back-office functions in order to support the front-line. It says across the board the service needs more support from Government to allow the service to find new ways of maximising service levels and efficiency, such as involving the private sector, or exploring force mergers. Although figures show overall rises in both the number of police officers and the number of police staff employed across the service over the past five years this varied significantly across forces with 13 forces reporting a reduction over the same period. On the basis of provisional financial information from the Government, some forces are planning to cut officer numbers in the next financial year. The position after 2011 is unclear as the Government has given no indication of funding settlements after that, but all forces believe they will have to make significant spending cuts. The Committee believes it may be time to review the entire means by which money is allocated to forces, as the distribution of the police national grant is seen as a barrier to maximising resources. It has become clear to the Committee that voluntary mergers can enable forces to make substantial savings. And in the right circumstances, the private sector can provide the police with expertise they may lack, value for money in service delivery and a source of up-front investment.

Book Heritage Lottery Fund

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2007-10-23
  • ISBN : 9780215036711
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Heritage Lottery Fund written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-10-23 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was set up in 1994, the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £3.8 billion of funding to some 24,000 projects covering all types of heritage with a wide range of benefits. The Fund operates within a framework of policy directions issued by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and currently distributes one sixth of the money raised by the National Lottery for good causes. Following on from a NAO report (HCP 323, session 2006-07; ISBN 9780102944624) published in March 2007, the Committee's report looks at how the money has been spent, what has been achieved, and the effectiveness of the grant-making process to ensure value for money. Conclusions reached include that the Fund has successfully reduced the amount of undistributed money it holds but spends around nine per cent of its annual income on administration. Many applicants find the Fund's application and assessment processes confusing, off-putting, and unnecessarily burdensome, and there are significant variations in funding between regions. The Fund is not able to demonstrate effectively its impact in opening up the heritage to people from deprived or minority backgrounds. Although projects are largely delivered to time and cost, the Fund needs to do more to tackle the poor project management skills of some grant recipients. From April 2009, the Government intends to divert more than £160 million from the Fund to help pay for the 2012 Olympics and the Fund's income may be further reduced by as much as £95 million if ring-fenced income from Olympic lottery games diverts sales from other lottery games.

Download or read book Nick Clegg written by Chris Bowers and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early April 2010 Nick Clegg was fighting for recognition, even as the young, fresh and personable leader of Britain's third political party. Two weeks later he was the focus of 'Cleggmania' and his popularity was compared with Churchill's. Four weeks after that he became the second most important figure in the government - but within a year he was ridiculed and reviled as popular hopes turned to disappointment. But who is Nick Clegg? What has made him the man he is today? By what route did he enjoy one of the most spectacular rises - and falls - in British politics? This fully revised and updated edition of Chris Bowers' acclaimed biography contains an analysis of the first years of coalition government, and tells us what we can expect of the Deputy Prime Minister as the next general election approaches. With a lightness of touch that captures the spirit of the unstuffy Lib Dem leader, and with the benefit of access to Clegg himself and the many people who have shaped and worked with him, Bowers presents a sensitive, critical and above all insightful portrait of one of the leading political figures of our age.

Book New Philanthropy and Social Justice

Download or read book New Philanthropy and Social Justice written by Behrooz Morvaridi and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, wealthy individuals and private corporations have become increasingly involved in philanthropy, often by establishing foundations targeted at helping to reduce poverty, disease, and other social problems. But as the essays in this interdisciplinary volume show, this new philanthropy does not provide a long-term solution, because it fails to tackle social injustice or the structural reasons for inequality. Placing this discussion in a global context, this far-reaching book questions the political and ideological reasons why rich individuals and companies engage in poverty reduction through philanthropy and suggests that the new philanthropy and social justice debate extends far beyond national boundaries.

Book Venture Capital Funding

Download or read book Venture Capital Funding written by Stephen Bloomfield and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most informed business people will know something about venture capital. However, much of the detail of what actually goes on when an investment is being made is unknown to most outsiders. This absence of knowledge means that much time and effort is often fruitlessly expended trying to secure venture capital from the wrong sources or by businesses that would be better off seeking different forms of funding. Venture Capital Funding clears some of the fog that surrounds how venture capital works. It illuminates the background processes that exist in venture capital businesses and dispels the myths. If you are thinking of using venture capital to develop your business it will enable you to understand the driving forces behind each stage of the investment process, and will equip you to deal with venture capitalists and other professionals involved. Highly practical and accessible, this book examines the following areas: what sort of businesses will be attractive to the different types of venture capitalist; the processes of investment; the particular targets of venture funds; the pressures on the venture capitalists themselves as individual investors. By understanding what venture capitalists want, what they are willing to invest in, and on what terms, you and your business will be one step closer to securing capital.

Book Europeanization and Multilevel Governance

Download or read book Europeanization and Multilevel Governance written by Ian Bache and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europeanization has become a major theme within European studies in recent years, emphasizing the domestic effects of the EU on its member and applicant states. At the same time, multilevel governance has emerged as an important concept, highlighting shifts both in horizontal relations between state and society and in vertical links between actors at different territorial levels. In this state-of-the-art study, Ian Bache traces the relationship between these two key elements, considering the extent to which Europeanization advances multilevel governance within member states through the requirements of EU cohesion policy. Bache focuses especially on Britain, a member state whose political system has been increasingly characterized by multilevel governance since it became an EU member. Comparing Britain's case to that of ten other member states, the author distinguishes between the EU's effects in simple polities--in which voice, influence, and power are diffused through multiple levels and modes of governance--and in compound polities, where voice, influence, and power are more concentrated. Bringing together the conceptual tools of multilevel governance and policy networks and developing a framework for using these tools together in future research, this clearly written study will be valuable for scholars and students of EU and British politics.
