Book excerpt: ÒA primary condition for fresh thinking on the Trinity is an accurate, objective account of past and present thoughtÓ wrote one reviewer when The Triune God first appeared in 1972. ÒThis [is what] Fortman has presented sensitively, accurately, and compactly.Ó The author sets out Òto trace the historical development of Trinitarian doctrine from its written beginnings to its contemporary status.Ó Thus he treats the biblical witness, the Council of Nicea, Augustine, the Middle Ages, and the development of this doctrine from the fifteenth century to the present in the Protestant, Orthodox, and Catholic traditions.

Download or read book The Way to Faith written by David A. Pailin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary uncertainty about faith finds its roots in the nineteenth century. The first chapter of this book indicates how philosophical, ethical, scientific, literary, historical, and democratic developments during that century brought about a fundamental crisis for faith. This crisis was reflected in Newman's attempts, both as an Anglican and as a Roman Catholic, to understand the nature of faith and of its certainty. A survey of Newman's intellectual background and of his discussions of the problem of faith, in unpublished as well as published writings up to 1870, is followed by a searching analysis of his definitive study of faith, The Grammar of Assent. This analysis shows that, in spite of certain criticisms, Newman provides a way of understanding the assent of faith that is of major importance today. This study of Newman, which is fully annotated, is both a historical study and a contribution to the contemporary theological debate about faith.

Book Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies

Download or read book Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies written by Don S. Browning and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies has pioneered the broader and deeper critique of psychological theories and practice. Informed by hermeneutical theory, Browning's widely acclaimed work drew much-needed attention to the ethical and metaphysical, even religious, assumptions that underlie present-day psychology. It has been deeply influential in many social sciences, in addition to the fields of pastoral counseling and practical theology. In this much-needed second edition, Browning and his new co-author show how the field of social science has indeed grasped and appropriated the hermeneutical approach, though with only slight appreciation of the religious dimensions of the social scientific endeavor. Browning and Cooper provide a completely new first chapter, newly situating the discussion, and update the core chapters of the book. They also add two new chapters, carrying the dialogue on with three new psychotherapeutic theorists, then with new evangelical writers on the relation of theology and psychology. This new edition, like its predecessor, will set the stage for the religion-psychology dialogue for years to come.
