Book excerpt: Terrors; it’s not always the monster in the bed that you need to worry about… Dark Shadows: Sean Gilbert’s having his friends for a night of horror movies, but they’re woken in the middle of the night. When they realise it’s not Rusty the cat, they go in search of what it may be, only to find Rusty has beaten them to it. That’s when they discover that shadows aren’t as innocent as they seem. Ne-Fairy-Ous: It’s Alyssa Graham’s tenth birthday and she’s having a party to which all of the local “peasants” are invited. When one guest disappears into the forest behind her house and doesn’t come out, she and her friends follow to continue their bullying of her. But they’re met with a malevolent force they’ve never encountered before. And never will again. A Rake Is Not Just a Garden Tool: Quinn Kingsley and his friends go exploring around the ruins of the local hospital for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. They go armed with bats and cameras because strange sounds have been heard from the ruins. As they walk around making their own “Attenborough” video, they soon find out the hard way that a rake is not just a garden tool. Well, Well, Well…: Wynn Ellery is panning for gold for his twelfth birthday and his friends have come along for the ride. Once they have their fill of gold, burgers, and hotdogs, they trek across the river to explore the old prospecting ruins to see how the world has changed. But what they find is even older, and freakier, than they could ever imagine. Elizabeth Wants to Play: Harlan and his cousin Levi want to show their friends around their grandmother’s house. It’s a home full of weird and wonderful things collected over decades, including all of the haunted toys in the basement who are having one continual tea party. But when one toy, in particular, wants to play with them, the boys have quite a demon on their hands, especially when she gets down and dirty.

Download or read book Film Directors and Emotion written by Darragh Greene and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema is an affective medium. Films move us to feel wonder, joy, and love as well as fear, anger, and hatred. Today, we are living through a new age of sensibility when emotion is given priority over reason. Yet, there is a counter-cultural current in contemporary American cinema that offers a more nuanced treatment of emotion. Both aesthetically and eidetically, this new cinema of affect allows viewers to make up their own minds about what they feel and think. This book focuses on key films by important auteur-directors--David Fincher, Bryan Singer, Christopher Nolan, Kathryn Bigelow, Richard Linklater, Barry Jenkins, Greta Gerwig, and Pete Docter--who are to the forefront of this new cinema. It explores how they anatomize affect and how it functions in the creation or degradation of character and society.

Download or read book Scofield s Notes written by Kathy Beardsley and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentored by James H. Brookes, a dispensationalist, Cyrus Ingerson Scofield not only followed in his footsteps, but created a foundation for his own interpretation of dispensationalism. That interpretation along with his commentary on various Scripture passages came to be known as ScofieldaEUR(tm)s notes, which were placed within the pages of the King James Version of the Bible. Titled ScofieldaEUR(tm)s Study Bible (previously ScofieldaEUR(tm)s Reference Bible), it became a best-selling Bible in a relatively short period and continues to hold a solid standing as one of the favorite Bibles to be purchased. The escalation of prophecy news, sales in movies and books with that same message, and the steadfast loyalty to the rapture and tribulation theory are largely due to ScofieldaEUR(tm)s notes. To keep it short and sweet, the author focuses on breaking down the Scripture passages in the books of Daniel and RevelationaEUR"two of the books alleged by Scofield and his followers to contain eschatological prophecies yet unfulfilled. It will be clearly shown how easily one can be confused by the seemingly logical explanations Scofield provides, why his interpretation of Scripture is so dangerous, and why it is important to study for oneself.

Download or read book The Discovery of Witchcraft written by Reginald Scot and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discovery of Witchcraft is an exposé of the early modern witchcraft. Originally published in 1584, the book was written against the belief in witches, to show that witchcraft did not exist. Part of its content exposed how feats of magic were done, and the book is often deemed the first textbook on conjuring. Moreover, the book contains a small section which describes how the charlatans were able to fool the public and why the prosecutions of the accused were unwarranted for and un-Christian. The author also provocatively held the Roman church responsible to the prosecutions. The book became highly popular as an exhaustive encyclopaedia of contemporary beliefs about witchcraft, spirits, alchemy, magic, and legerdemain. William Shakespeare also drew from his study of Scot's book hints for his picture of the witches in Macbeth, and Thomas Middleton in his play of The Witch likewise was indebted to this source.
