Book Did Ye Hear Mammy Died

Download or read book Did Ye Hear Mammy Died written by Séamas O'Reilly and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heart-warming and hilarious family memoir of growing up as one of eleven siblings raised by a single dad in Northern Ireland at the end of the Troubles. Séamas O’Reilly’s mother died when he was five, leaving him, his ten (!) brothers and sisters, and their beloved father in their sprawling bungalow in rural Derry. It was the 1990s; the Troubles were a background rumble, but Séamas was more preoccupied with dinosaurs, Star Wars, and the actual location of heaven than the political climate. An instant bestseller in Ireland, Did Ye Hear Mammy Died? is a book about a family of loud, argumentative, musical, sarcastic, grief-stricken siblings, shepherded into adulthood by a man whose foibles and reticence were matched only by his love for his children and his determination that they would flourish. “In this joyous, wildly unconventional memoir, Séamas O'Reilly tells the story of losing his mother as a child and growing up with ten siblings in Northern Ireland during the final years of the Troubles as a raucous comedy, a grand caper that is absolutely bursting with life.”―Patrick Radden Keefe, NYT bestselling author of Say Nothing and Empire of Pain One of NPR’s Best Books of the Year

Book The Figure of the Detective

Download or read book The Figure of the Detective written by Charles Brownson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a history of the detective genre, coextensive with the novel itself, identifying the attitudes and institutions needed for the genre to emerge in its mature form around 1880. The theory of the genre is laid out along with its central theme of the getting and deployment of knowledge. Sherlock Holmes, the English Classic stories and their inheritors are examined in light of this theme and the balance of two forms of knowledge used in fictional detection--cool or rational, and warm or emotional. The evolution of the genre formula is driven by changes in the social climate in which it is embedded. These changes explain the decay of the English Classic and its replacement by noir, hardboiled and spy stories, to end in the cul-de-sac of the thriller and the nostalgic Neo-Classic. Possible new forms of the detective story are suggested.

Book Treehugger

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shamus Flaherty
  • Publisher : Author House
  • Release : 2010-01-10
  • ISBN : 1452030928
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Treehugger written by Shamus Flaherty and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arborist Matthew Largess began his forestry career by killing giant redwoods as part of an experimental helicopter operation in the Oregon wilderness. When he wasn't busy killing trees he could be found partying on Ken Kesey's bus, sawing through a crowded bar with his chainsaw in a drug and alcohol-induced rage, or hopelessly attempting to quench his sex addiction with some questionable act with a random woman. Treehugger is the story of how he turned his life around to become one of the leading national spokesmen for the preservation of trees and old-growth forests in America. It is the story of Oakland Forest in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, which was slated to be clear-cut to make way for condominiums until Largess intervenes. While all evidence suggests that the forest is a lost cause, Largess hangs on to a shred of hope provided by reclusive futurist Crystal Powers. Powers tells him that he is the "voice of the forest," that angels will rise from the forest floor to thank him when he is done saving the forest, and that this is only the first forest he will save in a line of many worldwide. Author Shamus Flaherty narrates the ride at Largess' side as an employee of his tree-trimming business. Flaherty flashes back into the wildness of Largess' past and looks on skeptically in the present as Largess battles his inner demons and risks his livelihood in an effort to save the forest. Treehugger is a story of recovery, of comedy, of committment in the face of temptation, of magic in a world that doesn't believe, and of how little things can make a difference when it comes to saving our environment.

Book excerpt: Accused of murdering her child, a suspected sufferer of Munchausen syndrome by proxy seeks help from Southern private eye Lena Padget, in this riveting thriller. Lena Padget has dedicated her life to helping women in trouble, but she’s never dealt with a case as desperate and complex as that of Emma Marsden, who recently lost her infant son to a fatal liver ailment. The pediatrician who treated the child has accused the devastated mother of poisoning her son. Dr. Theodore Tundridge firmly believes that the tragedy was the result of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which can cause sufferers to inflict harm on others to draw attention to themselves. Now Emma is terrified that Children and Family Services will take her teenage daughter away from her. Lena’s search for the truth leads her into the dark, shadowy regions of the medical establishment—where a nightmare of unethical science may be unfolding behind the doors of Dr. Tundridge’s hospital pathology laboratory—and into troubling areas of her enigmatic client’s psyche. What initially appeared to be a case of medical malpractice and character assassination suddenly takes a sharp and dangerously unexpected turn, setting Lena on a race to untangle a twisted web of secrets before more children die. Shamus Award–winning author Lynn Hightower delivers a must-read for fans of Karin Slaughter, Laura Lippman, and Marcia Muller—a powerful story of medicine, motherhood, and madness that will stay with the reader long after the mystery’s surprising denouement. When Secrets Die is the 3rd book in the Lena Padget Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
