Book Dynamic Response of URM Buildings with Flexible Diaphragms

Download or read book Dynamic Response of URM Buildings with Flexible Diaphragms written by Andrew Christopher Costley and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seismic awareness increases, especially in traditionally non-seismic regions, there is an ever-increasing need to evaluate the lateral resistance of existing structures. Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures are perceived to be seismically unsafe due to dramatic media coverage of these structures following earthquakes. However, well-built URM structures can possess substantial seismic resistance, although quantifying this strength can be difficult. Through a combination of experimental and analytical investigations, the overall objective of the study is to provide recommendations for the evaluation and rehabilitation of URM buildings. To accomplish this objective, the study was broken down into three primary tasks: (1) an experimental investigation, (2) the development of a simple dynamic model, and (3) a review of current analysis methods. The experimental investigation consisted primarily of the construction and dynamic testing of two, two-story, URM buildings with flexible floor and roof diaphragms on the University of Illinois shaking table. The two buildings were subjected to a total of nine simulated earthquakes. Experimental results indicated that (first-story) pier rocking was a ductile mode of response. Based on experimental results, a simple (3-DOF), nonlinear elastic model was developed. This model, in conjunction with a nonlinear time-step integration program, was used to estimate peak displacements during the rocking portions of the later earthquake simulations. The third task was a review of existing static and dynamic methods for analyzing URM structures. The static methods studied included two design codes, two rehabilitation codes, finite element modeling, and a pushover analysis. Dynamic methods included an elastic time-step integration, response spectra analysis, equivalent frame modeling, and finite element modeling. After a thorough examination of the measured results from the dynamic testing and a comparison between these results with those calculated during the analytical studies, a number of recommendations for the evaluation and rehabilitation of unreinforced masonry buildings with flexible diaphragms were made.

Book Strategies for Earthquake Strengthening Vintage Clay brick Unreinforced Masonry Buildings

Download or read book Strategies for Earthquake Strengthening Vintage Clay brick Unreinforced Masonry Buildings written by Noor Misnon and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the strategies for earthquake strengthening vintage clay bricks unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings. URM buildings are well known to be vulnerable to damage from earthquake-induced lateral forces that may result in partial or full building collapse. The 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes are the most recent destructive natural disaster that resulted in the deaths of 185 people. The earthquake events had drawn people's attention when URM failure and collapse caused about 39 of the fatality. Despite the poor performance of URM buildings during the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes, a number of successful case study buildings were identified and their details research in-depth. In order to discover the successful seismic retrofitting techniques, two case studies of retrofitted historical buildings located in Christchurch, New Zealand i.e. Orion's URM substations and an iconic Heritage Hotel (aka Old Government Building) was conducted by investigating and evaluating the earthquake performance of the seismic retrofitting technique applied on the buildings prior to the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes and their performance after the earthquakes sequence. The second part of the research reported in this thesis was directed with the primary aim of developing a cost-effective seismic retrofitting technique with minimal interference to the vintage clay-bricks URM buildings. Two retrofitting techniques, (i) near-surface mounted steel wire rope (NSM-SWR) with further investigation on URM wallettes to get deeper understanding the URM in-plane behaviour, and (ii) FRP anchor are reported in this research thesis.

Book Fire Following Earthquake

Download or read book Fire Following Earthquake written by Charles R. Scawthorn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directly attributable to these fires following the earthquake will be the loss of hundreds to perhaps a thousand lives, and an economic loss of forty to perhaps as much as one hundred billion dollars. This loss is virtually fully insured and could result in distortions in the US and global insurance industry. Other economic impacts include the loss of perhaps a billion dollars in local tax revenues. A number of opportunities exist for mitigating this problem, including construction of a seismically reliable basin-wide saltwater pumping system, and the mandatory use of automated gas shut-off valves, or seismic shut-off gas meters, in densely built areas.
