Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darkly satirical and wickedly funny, this prize-winning novel takes a tilt at a wide range of contemporary matters. What happened that connects a diverse group of characters, along with an ex-All Black and an elephant? The people who committed the act of revenge in 1985 thought it was perfectly executed. Twenty years on, the truth is revealed, the truth about the deception that started it all. From sexual stereotyping to militant feminism, the machismo of the All Blacks to new age beliefs, psychiatry to womb burial and naming ceremonies, nothing is safe from the razor-sharp wit of this superb writer. This novel won the Deutz Medal for Fiction in the Montana New Zealand Book Awards.

In this funny and moving novel, prize-winning author Stephanie Johnson turns her wry eye on us. ‘What a fabulous read. Stephanie Johnson’s characters choose an old motel with little to offer except an amazing view in order to start a ‘new life’. Their first guests are a classic cast of the sorrowful and dysfunctional that every-day life throws at us these days. They are joined by their pregnant daughter, a mysterious young criminal from next door and a dog that knows more than all of them put together. The story is fast paced, and unpredictable, it’s smart, contemporary and heartbreaking all at once. And, just when it was about to make me cry, Johnson startled me into wild laughter. This is her best book ever, and I loved every page of it.’ – Fiona Kidman

Book excerpt: A riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossible standards of beauty, after-hours room salons catering to wealthy men, ruthless social hierarchies, and K-pop mania “Powerful and provocative . . . a novel about female strength, spirit, resilience—and the solace that friendship can sometimes provide.”—The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Time • NPR • Esquire • Bustle • BBC • New York Post • InStyle Kyuri is an achingly beautiful woman with a hard-won job at a Seoul “room salon,” an exclusive underground bar where she entertains businessmen while they drink. Though she prides herself on her cold, clear-eyed approach to life, an impulsive mistake threatens her livelihood. Kyuri’s roommate, Miho, is a talented artist who grew up in an orphanage but won a scholarship to study art in New York. Returning to Korea after college, she finds herself in a precarious relationship with the heir to one of the country’s biggest conglomerates. Down the hall in their building lives Ara, a hairstylist whose two preoccupations sustain her: an obsession with a boy-band pop star, and a best friend who is saving up for the extreme plastic surgery that she hopes will change her life. And Wonna, one floor below, is a newlywed trying to have a baby that she and her husband have no idea how they can afford to raise in Korea’s brutal economy. Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.

Merle Carbury, an author in her own right, also teaches Creative Writing. Amid the tension of the final semester of the year, her many and varied students prepare to submit their manuscripts. As Merle mentors their assorted ambitions, observes the romantic entanglements of her colleague, worries about her husband and is intrigued by their mysterious German lodger, she both imparts and embodies how to write a novel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wit, compassion and insight combine in this entertaining novel that explores the politics and human comedy behind writers’ festivals and the publishing industry. Writers’ festivals can be hotbeds of literary and romantic intrigue, and the Oceania is up there with the best of them. Rookie director Rae McKay, recently returned from New York, fears she has bitten off more than she can chew. Pressure comes not only from local and international writers but also from the prestigious Opus Book Award, which this year is being hosted by the festival. Add to that high-level diplomatic fallout surrounding a dissident Chinese writer, Rae’s slowly disintegrating private life and ongoing dramas involving much loved characters of The Writing Class, and the result is a wise and witty novel that explores the contemporary phenomenon of the public face of the writer. This lively, stand-alone novel is as ‘intelligent, tender and funny’ as readers found The Writing Class. '. . . a book that's sophisticated, witty and - best of all - generous in its attitudes to its characters. It's a love letter to reading and writing and things readers and writers share, especially the mutual effort to understand the world and the people in it.' - Paul Little, North & South on The Writing Class

Book Ufo Sightings Paranormal Ufo Sighting Cases That Still Mystify Non believers Paranormal Ufo Sighting Cases That Still Mystify Non believers

This book was released on 101-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern ufology focuses on mysterious lights on ceres or tales of alien abduction, but this wasn’t always the case, and looking at how the beliefs in the ufo phenomenon have changed or stayed the same can shed light on how culture and belief changes over time. One does not have to believe humans are actually being visited by aliens from another planet to recognize the importance of ufos in human society. Any widespread belief that endures for centuries is worthy of study, and as always, cases exist that can’t be explained away simple superstition. Inside find cases of ufo's that still remain unexplained sighting: · A night to remember for steve and dawn hess · Travis walton baffles investigators · Allagash abductions · The betty andreasson affair · The strange encounters of barbara archer · The buff ledge camp encounter · Encounter on the pascagoula river This book is a collection of witness sightings at or near the ufo watchtower. Some witnesses were thorough in their descriptions, some were brief. But taken as a whole, you'll be able to detect some patterns in the sightings, and have some fun doing your own "investigations". See if you can deduce some of the "known" explanations for yourself. For instance, a couple of the sightings apparently describe the first starlink satellites going over the valley.

Book 11 of the 50 Scariest UFO Incidents Worldwide

Download or read book 11 of the 50 Scariest UFO Incidents Worldwide written by Rafael Reyes Granger and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 50,000 out of 1 million sightings every year that are deemed credible by ufology researchers and experts. This mini-book is a compendium of scary UFO Incidents (in this author’s opinion) around the world that were either observed by or recorded by credible witnesses {except for the 1897 Aurora, Texas and the 1961 Betty & Barney Hill incidents}...such as competent radar operators or experienced air force/airplane pilots or experienced ICBM Launch Control Officers or all of the above. Examination of all the evidence from the alien bodies and materials of construction from several UFO crash recoveries collectively demonstrate categorically that these items were not of this earth. Yet personnel in government agencies still today insist that UFOs and their flight personnel don’t exist. Starting with the balloon fiasco cover up story for famous Roswell, N.M. UFO crash in July 1947, the government has deterred all government and civilian personnel from telling the truth about UFO incidents, which, in the future, resulted in job loss threats and ridicule from fellow workers, friends, and their relatives. And by so doing, their intelligence has been egregiously insulted. Hopefully the Youth of America will recognize the fact the UFOs are real, and persuade the emerging 2017 government to go about correcting the ignorant and wrongful policies and procedures of the previous governments concerning UFOs. Rafael Reyes Granger was born in Allentown, Pa. and graduated from the University of Virginia (BA-1959) and Drexel University(BS-1967) majoring in chemical engineering. Until retiring in 2004, he worked in the chemical and petrochemical USA facilities as a chemical plant project/design engineer. While working on a du Pont Titanium Dioxide Project in DeLisle, Miss, in 1988 his interest in UFOs was kindled by hearing, in person, the incredible story of a neighbor friend, Charles Hickson. Mr. Hickson {43 at the Incident time) and his coworker and fishing buddy, Calvin Parker(19), were abducted, while they were fishing, by creatures exiting a SpaceCraft(Charles and Calvin were petrified by fear at that moment} that landed along the Pascagoula River Bank [near the bridge over US 90] one October early evening in 1973. This news {when revealed in the next couple of days} created national media hysteria at the time. It was only the 2nd or 3rd time that “TIME” magazine’s employee-reporters ever covered a bonafide UFO story. More recently, their story was featured on Destination America’s “Unsealed UFO Files” (on National TV) in November 2015 as the “Pascagoula Affair”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Bingham’s Talking to the Dead introduced readers to one of the most compelling new heroines in crime fiction, Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths, earning comparisons to Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander. Now D.C. Griffiths returns to investigate a series of gruesome murders—and their connection to her own shadowy past. D.C. Fiona Griffiths is facing the prospect of a dull weekend when the call comes in, something about illegal dumping in a Cardiff suburb. But when she arrives on the scene she finds, in a garage freezer, a severed human leg, complete with a pink suede high-heeled shoe. South Wales police are able to ID the body part as that of a young woman who went missing five years earlier; a young woman who once made a living as an exotic dancer. All at once, Fiona’s job as a detective and her role as a loving daughter collide: Fiona’s father owns a Cardiff strip club and was once deeply involved in the local crime scene. Still in recovery from a devastating psychotic breakdown, Fiona is wary of exploring a path that might end at her father’s door . . . yet her obsessive approach to criminal investigation leaves her no other option. But Fiona’s specialty is not the living, it is the dead. And as she is just starting to get into the murdered girl’s head, a severed hand is found—and this one is male. Soon, police are swamped with an increasing number of body parts found in and around suburban gardens, sheds, and garages. Media attention is intense, and investigators are working from a list of hundreds of persons of interest. When the department identifies the second victim, Fiona struggles to connect him with the dead stripper. What do the victims have in common? And why this macabre method of disposing the corpses? The answers may be more than Fiona can handle. Because in order to solve the riddle of these hideous murders, D.C. Fiona Griffiths will have to delve into the mysteries of her past—and hope she comes out intact . . . and alive. Praise for Love Story, with Murders “A most intriguing, if peculiar, detective . . . Although his volatile protagonist certainly dominates the first-person narrative, [Harry] Bingham doesn’t stint on plot (very complicated), procedures (very detailed) or action (very brutal). . . . Satisfying.”—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review “Love Story, with Murders is a dark delight, and I look forward to Fiona’s future struggles with criminals, her demons and the mysteries of her past.”—The Washington Post “Bingham’s superb second police procedural featuring Det. Constable Fiona Griffiths delivers an even more intense plot and richer character study than his first. . . . Fiona’s past mental problems and her unconventional personality make her a distinctive lead.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Some of the most memorably staccato narration in the genre . . . [Bingham’s] remote, unquenchable heroine makes her stand apart from every one of her procedural brothers and sisters.”—Kirkus Reviews “Compelling . . . [Love Story, with Murders] amply proves the freshness and flair that [Bingham] has brought to the police procedural. . . . Surprisingly delicate, it weaves a sinuous, seductive spell and confirms we have a new crime talent to treasure.”—Daily Mail (UK) “Love Story, with Murders boasts what must be the most startling protagonist in modern crime fiction.”—The Sunday Times (London) From the Hardcover edition.

  • ISBN : 0773583319
  • Pages : 494 pages

Download or read book In the Province of History written by Ian McKay and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using archival sources, novels, government reports, and works on tourism and heritage, Ian McKay and Robin Bates look at how state planners, key politicians, and cultural figures such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, long-time premier Angus L. Macdonald, and novelist Thomas Raddall were all instrumental in forming "tourism/history." The authors argue that Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline - on the brutal British expulsion of Acadians from Nova Scotia - became a template a new kind of profit-making history that exalted whiteness and excluded ethnic minorities, women, and working class movements. A remarkable look at the intersection of politics, leisure, and the presentation of public history, In the Province of History is a revealing account of how a region has both used and distorted its own past.

Book The Oak Island Mystery

Book excerpt: The Oak Island mystery has been the world’s greatest and strangest treasure hunt, and after years of research the authors have finally solved the sinister with an answer that is challenging, controversial, and disturbing. In 1795 three boys discovered the top of an ancient shaft on uninhabited Oak Island in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. The boys began to dig, and what they uncovered started the world’s greatest and strangest treasure hunt but nobody knows what the treasure is. Two hundred years of courage, back-breaking effort, ingenuity, and engineering skills have failed to retrieve what is concealed there. Theories of what the treasure could be include Captain Kidd’s bloodstained pirate gold, an army payroll left by the French or British military engineers, priceless ancient manuscripts, the body of an Arif or other religious refugee leader, or the lost treasure of the Templars. The Oak Island curse prophesies that the treasure will not be found until seven men are dead and the last oak has fallen. That last oak has already gone, and six treasure hunters have been killed. After years of research, the authors have finally solved the sinister riddle of Oak Island, but their answer is challenging, controversial, and disturbing. Something beyond price still lies waiting in the labyrinth.

Book UFO s The Great Last Days Deception

Download or read book UFO s The Great Last Days Deception written by Billy Crone and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mention the topic of UFO's and Aliens and not only have most people already formed their opinions about them, but virtually everyone on the planet now believes in them. More people believe in Aliens than in the existence of God and more people believe that Aliens have visited planet earth than that Jesus is the Son of God. Ufology has become a new religion for 21st century where people now believe that Aliens will save them, not God. The problem is hardly anyone recognizes the true identity of UFO's let alone how they are being used to usher in one of the darkest, most deceptive times in the history of mankind. Therefore, this book, UFO's: The Great Last Days Deception seeks to equip you with the truth concerning so-called extraterrestrial visitors and their hidden demonic agenda. One of the biggest lies in the history of mankind is about to be foisted upon the whole world. The Rapture of the Church is going to happen, but it won't be from a liftoff in UFO's like we are being told. Don't fall for the lie!
