Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tracing the emergence of the Macedonian kingdom from its origins as a Balkan backwater to a major European and Asian power, Eugene Borza offers to specialists and lay readers alike a revealing account of a relatively unexplored segment of ancient history. He draws from recent archaeological discoveries and an enhanced understanding of historical geography to form a narrative that provides a material-culture setting for political events. Examining the dynamics of Macedonian relations with the Greek city-states, he suggests that the Macedonians, although they gradually incorporated aspects of Greek culture into their own society, maintained a distinct ethnicity as a Balkan people. "Borza has taken the trouble to know Macedonia: the land, its prehistory, its position in the Balkans, and its turbulent modern history. All contribute...to our understanding of the emergence of Macedon.... Borza has employed two of the historian's most valuable tools, autopsy and common sense, to produce a well-balanced introduction to the state that altered the course of Greek and Near Eastern history."--Waldemar Heckel, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

The least of his sons and daughters, hers was not the moon, or love, or battle...so low that she should have more rightly been numbered among his demigod children. Kore lingered at the edge of the feast hall, watching the great gods and goddesses revel. Too useless to sprout the grain with the nymphs, she followed her mother, Demeter, through the fields and made the flowers bloom, and she wasn't even too good at that. But what she liked best was when she was allowed to wander the woodlands and towns of the mortal world alone. It was there she found her destiny, one that would shake the world from the top of Olympus to the depths of Hades. Kore does not belong in the shadows, and she is not the Goddess of Flowers, spring or otherwise. But things never start out that way. It started, as many stories do, with a boy and a girl in a meadow. This is not the story passed down from Demeter's priests and priestesses. It is not the song sung for Demeter by her nymphs as her tears make the seasons turn. But it was never Demeter's story to tell at all. Grab your copy today to hear Persephone's side of the tale!

Book excerpt: Library Journal Science Fiction/Fantasy Debut of the Month (April 2013) Reimagining the Greek Gods of Olympus and placing them on modern Earth, this urban fantasy novel focuses on Plato Jones, who, after a stint with the Olympic Bureau of Investigation, is through with the Gods and their political games. While at first glance the Gods of Olympus are as different from one another as salt is from sugar, and despite their bickering, they share a universal bond, a thread of commonality that unites them: they're all jerks. Against Plato's protests, he's drawn into a murder investigation where the murderer's targets are the Gods themselves. Plato has cracked some tough cases: exposing cheating spouses, capturing treasonous heretics, and hunting three-headed dogs, but this time he's in over his head. How can he solve a crime that's impossible to commit? And what chance does Plato--a mere mortal--have against something powerful enough to kill a God?

It was 1970 when thirteen-year-old runaway Kit Walker was abducted by Manny Romero, a smooth-talking, low-level criminal, who first coddled her and then groomed her into his partner-in-crime. Before long, Kit and Manny were infamous for their string of gas station robberies throughout Texas, making a name for themselves as the Texaco Twosome. Twenty years after they meet, Kit has scraped together a life for herself and her daughter amongst the pecan trees and muddy creeks of the town of Pecan Hollow, far from Manny. But when he shows up at her doorstep a new man, fresh out of prison, Kit is forced to reckon with the shadows of her past. A gritty, penetrating, and unexpectedly tender novel, Shadows of Pecan Hollow is a hauntingly intimate and distinctly original debut about the complexity of love—both romantic and familial—and the bonds that define us. “Paper Moon meets Badlands in this mesmerizing Texas backroads thriller, a twisty story of a runaway girl who finds a home and a desperate love on the road with an opportunistic criminal.”—Janet Fitch
