Book Poe and the Visual Arts

Download or read book Poe and the Visual Arts written by Barbara Cantalupo and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Edgar Allan Poe is most often identified with stories of horror and fear, there is an unrecognized and even forgotten side to the writer. He was a self-declared lover of beauty who “from childhood’s hour . . . [had] not seen / As others saw.” Poe and the Visual Arts is the first comprehensive study of how Poe’s work relates to the visual culture of his time. It reveals his “deep worship of all beauty,” which resounded in his earliest writing and never entirely faded, despite the demands of his commercial writing career. Barbara Cantalupo examines the ways in which Poe integrated visual art into sketches, tales, and literary criticism, paying close attention to the sculptures and paintings he saw in books, magazines, and museums while living in Philadelphia and New York from 1838 until his death in 1849. She argues that Poe’s sensitivity to visual media gave his writing a distinctive “graphicality” and shows how, despite his association with the macabre, his enduring love of beauty and knowledge of the visual arts richly informed his corpus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the past, histories of American art have traditionally highlighted the work of a familiar roster of artists, often white and male. Over time the achievements of others worthy of attention, including numerous women and artists of color, as well as white men, have gone uncelebrated and fallen into obscurity. In this collection of essays, sixty-three scholars from various institutions, specialties, and locales respond to the challenge to nominate one maker deserving remembrance and detail the reasons for their choice. The collection is headed by a preface from editor Charles C. Eldredge, explaining the genesis of the anthology, and an introduction by Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick, promoting the value of recovered reputations and oeuvres in the training of future art experts and audiences"--

Book The Property of the Nation

  • Author : Matthew R. Costello

Download or read book The Property of the Nation written by Matthew R. Costello and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2021-12-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Washington was an affluent slave owner who believed that republicanism and social hierarchy were vital to the young country’s survival. And yet, he remains largely free of the “elitist” label affixed to his contemporaries, as Washington evolved in public memory during the nineteenth century into a man of the common people, the father of democracy. This memory, we learn in The Property of the Nation, was a deliberately constructed image, shaped and reshaped over time, generally in service of one cause or another. Matthew R. Costello traces this process through the story of Washington’s tomb, whose history and popularity reflect the building of a memory of America’s first president—of, by, and for the American people. Washington’s resting place at his beloved Mount Vernon estate was at times as contested as his iconic image; and in Costello’s telling, the many attempts to move the first president’s bodily remains offer greater insight to the issue of memory and hero worship in early America. While describing the efforts of politicians, business owners, artists, and storytellers to define, influence, and profit from the memory of Washington at Mount Vernon, this book’s main focus is the memory-making process that took place among American citizens. As public access to the tomb increased over time, more and more ordinary Americans were drawn to Mount Vernon, and their participation in this nationalistic ritual helped further democratize Washington in the popular imagination. Shifting our attention from official days of commemoration and publicly orchestrated events to spontaneous visits by citizens, Costello’s book clearly demonstrates in compelling detail how the memory of George Washington slowly but surely became The Property of the Nation.

Book Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century written by Wendy Bellion and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things change. Broken and restored, reused and remade, objects transcend their earliest functions, locations, and appearances. While every era witnesses change, the eighteenth century experienced artistic, economic, and demographic transformations that exerted unique pressures on material cultures around the world. Locating material objects at the heart of such phenomena, Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century expands beyond Eurocentric perspectives to discover the mobile, transcultural nature of eighteenth-century art worlds. From porcelain to betel leaves, Chumash hats to natural history cabinets, this book examines how objects embody imperialism, knowledge, and resistance in various ways. By embracing things both elite and everyday, this volume investigates physical and technological manipulations of objects while attending to the human agents who shaped them in an era of accelerating global contact and conquest. Featuring ten essays, the volume foregrounds diverse scholarly approaches to chart new directions for art history and cultural history. Ranging from California to China, Bengal to Britain, Material Cultures of the Global Eighteenth Century illuminates the transformations within and between artistic media, follows natural and human-made things as they migrate across territories, and reveals how objects catalyzed change in the transoceanic worlds of the early modern period.
