Book The Serving Library Annual 2020 21 Objects

Download or read book The Serving Library Annual 2020 21 Objects written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year's 'Annual' is published in tandem with a long-term installation of The Serving Library's collection of (mostly) framed objects at 019, an artist-run space in a former welding factory in Ghent, Belgium. Apparently, the sole common denominator of the objects in the collection - which range from paintings, photographs, and LP sleeves, to a can of green paint, a German car license plate, and an ouija board - is to have appeared as illustrations in an issue of The Serving Library Annual or one of its immediate predecessors, Bulletins of The Serving Library or Dot Dot Dot, sometime over the last 20 years. The present volume assembles The Serving Library collection at the time of writing, arranged in chronological order of production, as full-page images with extended captions. 00Exhibition: 019, Ghent, Belgium (16. ? 31.10.2020).

Book Serving Library Users from Asia

Download or read book Serving Library Users from Asia written by John Hickok and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian populations are among some of the fastest growing cultural groups in the US. While books on serving other target groups in libraries have been published (e.g., disabled, Latino, seniors, etc.), few books on serving library users of Asian heritage have been written. Thus the timely need for this book. Rather than a generalized overview of Asians as a whole, this book has 24 separate chapters—each on 24 specific Asian countries/cultures of East, Southeast, and South Asia—with a wealth of resources for understanding, interacting with, outreaching to, and serving library users of each culture. Resources include cultural guides (both print and online), language helps (with sample library vocabulary), Asian booksellers, nationwide cultural groups, professional literature, and more. Resources and suggestions are given for all three types of libraries—public, school, and academic—making this book valuable for all librarians. The demographics of each Asian culture (numbers and distribution)—plus history of immigration and international student enrollment—is also featured. As a bonus, each chapter spotlights a US public, school, and academic library providing model outreach to Asian library users. Additionally, this book provides a detailed description and analysis of libraries in each of the 24 Asian countries. The history, development, facilities, conditions, technology, classification systems, and more—of public, school, and academic libraries—are all discussed, with detailed documentation. Country conditions influencing libraries and library use are also described: literacy levels, reading cultures, languages and writing systems, educational systems, and more. Based on the author’s 15 years of research and travels to Asia, this work is a must-have for all librarians.

Book Youth Serving Libraries in Japan Russia and the United States

Download or read book Youth Serving Libraries in Japan Russia and the United States written by Lesley S.J. Farmer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, interest in International Librarianship has grown rapidly and will continue to grow as globalization influences education and librarianship. In countries around the world, public and school libraries have unique roles and their staffs collaborate across types of libraries to varying degrees. Library staff preparation, training, and ongoing learning and organization of youth-serving librarians mirror each country’s values and priorities. The essays in Youth-Serving Libraries in Japan, Russia, and the United States address the universal and culture-specific aspects of library services to children and teens in these three countries. This collection shows how libraries have developed in light of each country’s political, educational, and social history. They examine how government and citizen roles in youth-serving libraries also reflect culturally defined social structures. The chapters highlight unique collections and services within each country and also show how librarians deal with the challenges they encounter, both from within their culture as well as from outside—including natural disasters. Each country’s authors discuss contemporary issues that face youth-serving libraries, such as information literacy, reading in a multimedia world, and the overarching influence of technology. This book will be of interest to youth-serving librarians around the world, library educators, and for those studying international and young adult librarianship.
