Book Structuring the Journey to Work

Download or read book Structuring the Journey to Work written by Howard S. Lapin and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the largest and costliest element of vehicular traffic in United States cities, the travel to and from places of employment—the "journey to work." By reason of its sheer volume, and also because of its concentration within a few hours of the day, this rush-hour travel presents to planners and engineers critical problems relating to the location and capacity needs of streets and highways, and transit and parking facilities. The patterns of work trips also comprise important determinants of maximum reasonable distances between residential areas and the dusters of commercial and industrial enterprise. This monograph presents analytical approaches to the study of the journey to work—primarily in development of the patterns of its time and scale characteristics. Such patterns are considered in relation to population size of cities, and in terms of their apparent changes and factors for change over the years. The approaches discussed are those of interest to technicians working in the prevalent low budget; high time-pressure situation. Examples are analyzed from data of several United States cities, particularly Philadelphia, and broad general conclusions are drawn from the case studies. Supplemented by numerous diagrams and numerical tables, Structuring the journey to Work will be of interest to traffic engineers, city and regional planners, urban geographers, and industrial and residential site selectors. It will have some interest as well for professionals in land economics and labor market analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban historians have long portrayed suburbanization as the result of a bourgeois exodus from the city, coupled with the introduction of streetcars that enabled the middle class to leave the city for the more sylvan surrounding regions. Demonstrating that this is only a partial version of urban history, "Manufacturing Suburbs" reclaims the history of working-class suburbs by examining the development of industrial suburbs in the United States and Canada between 1850 and 1950. Contributors demonstrate that these suburbs developed in large part because of the location of manufacturing beyond city limits and the subsequent building of housing for the workers who labored within those factories. Through case studies of industrial suburbanization and industrial suburbs in several metropolitan areas (Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, and Montreal), "Manufacturing Suburbs" sheds light on a key phenomenon of metropolitan development before the Second World War.

Download or read book Inventing Home written by Akram Fouad Khater and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1920 over one-third of the peasants of Mount Lebanon left their villages and traveled to the Americas. This book traces the journeys of these villagers from the ranks of the peasantry into a middle class of their own making. Inventing Home delves into the stories of these travels, shedding much needed light on the impact of emigration and immigration in the development of modernity. It focuses on a critical period in the social history of Lebanon--the "long peace" between the uprising of 1860 and the beginning of the French mandate in 1920. The book explores in depth the phenomena of return emigration, the questioning and changing of gender roles, and the rise of the middle class. Exploring new areas in the history of Lebanon, Inventing Home asks how new notions of gender, family, and class were articulated and how a local "modernity" was invented in the process. Akram Khater maps the jagged and uncertain paths that the fellahin from Mount Lebanon carved through time and space in their attempt to control their future and their destinies. His study offers a significant contribution to the literature on the Middle East, as well as a new perspective on women and on gender issues in the context of developing modernity in the region.
