Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, European settlers from diverse backgrounds transformed Ontario. By 1881, German speakers made up almost ten per cent of the province’s population and the German language was spoken in businesses, public schools, churches, and homes. German speakers in Ontario – children, parents, teachers, and religious groups – used their everyday practices and community institutions to claim a space for bilingualism and religious diversity within Canadian society. In The Boundaries of Ethnicity Benjamin Bryce considers what it meant to be German in Ontario between 1880 and 1930. He explores how the children of immigrants acquired and negotiated the German language and how religious communities relied on language to reinforce social networks. For the Germans who make up the core of this study, the distinction between insiders and outsiders was often unclear. Boundaries were crossed as often as they were respected. German ethnicity in this period was fluid, and increasingly interventionist government policies and the dynamics of generational change also shaped the boundaries of ethnicity. German speakers, together with immigrants from other countries and Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds, created a framework that defined relationships between the state, the public sphere, ethnic spaces, family, and religion in Canada that would persist through the twentieth century. The Boundaries of Ethnicity uncovers some of the origins of Canadian multiculturalism and government attempts to manage this diversity.

Book Language Schooling and Cultural Conflict

Download or read book Language Schooling and Cultural Conflict written by Chad Gaffield and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987-07-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Bilingualism was at the heart of controversy in Ontario politics one hundred years ago when Anglophones burned effigies of Louis Riel and Francophones hanged flaming images of John A. Macdonald. Strong public reaction to Bill 8 made bilingualism one of the most pressing issues in the 1987 provincial election campaign. Now available in paperback, Language, Schooling and Cultural Conflict recasts this central debate of Canadian history and calls into question both the theory and method of established studies in cultural conflict and ethnic identity. The book thus provides a very dramatic example of how recent research strategies can benefit our understanding of Canadian history and cultural affairs.

Book The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions

Download or read book The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions written by Rosa Bruno-Jofré and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the journey taken by the Canadian Province of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) from their establishment in Manitoba in 1898 until 2008, when the congregation as a whole redefined its mission and vision. Using archival research conducted in Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as in England and Italy, and incorporating oral interviews with RNDM sisters, this book explores the historical work of sisters in schools and the part they played in the educational state in formation. The details of the congregation's activity in schools show how the sisters' educational work was related to the social characteristics of the communities (e.g., those of French Canadian settlers, British immigrants, the M?tis population, and continental European immigrants), first in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and later in Ontario and Quebec. The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions examines the impact of Vatican II in the 1960s, and into the 2000s, as well as the dismantling of neo-scholasticism and the process of secularization of consciousness in society at large. The emerging issues led the congregation and the province to examine their individual and collective identity at the intersection of feminist theology, eco-spirituality, and a critique of western cosmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the acrimonious episodes in French-English relations in Canada resulted from the bilingual schools question in Ontario in the early part of the twentieth century; the issue reinforced the divisions within the Catholic Church between francophones and anglophones. In 1916 the Pope wrote a letter to the Canadian bishops in the hope of encouraging a peaceful settlement to this dispute. In his discussion the pope and his advisers relied heavily on the Apostolic Delegate of the Holy See to Canada, Archbishop Pellegrino Stagni, particularly on two reports Stagni had sent to Rome in 1915 on the problems regarding bilingual schools in the province and especially in the city of Ottawa. In The View From Rome John Zucchi translates these two reports for the first time. His introduction places the reports in context and offers historical background to the events surrounding the divisions in the church.
