Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s the theme of God's self-revelation has been treated only briefly in Christian theology, at times simply ignored, and often confused with biblical inspiration. Revelation: Towards a Christian Theology of God's Self-Revelation lays out its basic characteristics, and begins by distinguishing between revelation in the primary sense (a living encounter with God's self-disclosure) and in the secondary sense (statements of faith derived from that encounter, or 'propositional' revelation). It considers revelation as transforming and informing, as being 'sacramental' or mediated through words and deeds, as communicated through an endless variety of means and mediators, as related to but distinct from biblical inspiration and truth, and as reaching those of 'other' faiths or of no faith at all. Gerald O'Collins skilfully distinguishes between past (or 'foundational') revelation, present (or 'dependent') revelation, and future (or 'eschatological') revelation. He expounds with ecumenical sensitivity the complex relationship between tradition and scripture. O'Collins moves into controversial areas by insisting that the divine self- revelation takes place only when received by human faith and that 'outside revelation there is no salvation (extra revelationem nulla salus'). This volume offers a coherent account of God's self-revelation, which can serve as a basis for all that follows in theology and for dialogue with those who follow 'other' living faiths or none at all. O'Collins extends and enriches what he has proposed in earlier books and articles about the characteristics of God's self-revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...the more we are in the light, doing good works of mercy-corporal or spiritual-the more we become more like Jesus. But we know that, already, right? Do we, now? Have we greeted Jesus in prayer this morning when we awoke; asked Him how He felt throughout the day; acknowledged Him by saying "hello" to someone; have we thought, said, or did something kind for someone; did we thank Him for giving us another day to enjoy; have we ever thanked Him for creating us and sustaining us; have we ever looked in the mirror and said we see a miracle? Ah, if only there was more time in the day Perhaps we are rationalizing to the point of leading ourselves into darkness? What is it we fear that we have to live in darkness so much? Could it be the bright, shining, warm light at the end of the tunnel? For those of us who don't try to live in the light: You won't have to worry about being blinded or scorched by the bright, shining, warm light at the end of the tunnel Michael J. Lorenzo is an ordained permanent deacon, now inactive, in the Roman Catholic Christian Church. Book Who Is God

Book excerpt: Internationally respected scholar Richard Bauckham offers a brief, engaging study of divine revelation in Scripture. He probes the deep meaning of well-known moments in the biblical story in order to address the key question the Bible is designed to answer: Who is God? Accessible for laypeople and important to scholars, this volume begins by exploring three key events in the Bible in which God is revealed: Jacob's dream at Bethel (the revelation of the divine presence), Moses at the burning bush (the revelation of the divine Name), and Moses on Mount Sinai (the revelation of the divine character). In each case, Bauckham traces these themes through the rest of Scripture. He then shows how the New Testament builds on the Old by exploring three revelatory events in Mark's Gospel, events that reveal the Trinity: Jesus's baptism, transfiguration, and crucifixion. This book is based on the Frumentius Lectures for 2015 at the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology in Addis Ababa and on the Hayward Lectures for 2018 at Acadia Divinity College, Nova Scotia.

Book The Fatherhood of God in John Calvin s Thought

Download or read book The Fatherhood of God in John Calvin s Thought written by Karin Spiecker Stetina and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of feminist critique, Karin Spiecker Stetina gives us a thorough study of John Calvin's ideas on the fatherhood of God. After looking briefly at Calvin's own experience of fatherhood, the author looks in depth at his epistemology and then his imagery for God as Father against the background of the biblical and historical doctrine. This intriguing study allows us, through the lens of the reformer's theology, to look again at what we mean by God as Father and believers as sons and daughters of the living God.
