Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A refreshing alternative to many books on Taoism, this book uses an archaeological and historical approach to uncover the origins of this ancient philosophy. Using illustrations and photographs, D. W. Kreger, skillfully explores evidence that key concepts of Taoism may have actually existed for hundreds or even thousands of years before the earliest known texts by Lao Tzu, who lived 2500 years ago. By reanalyzing the verses of Lao Tzu from this perspective, Dr. Kreger discovered mystical and shamanic elements of Taoism, which have previously eluded scholars and seekers for ages. This book also contains a remarkably fresh, updated translation of the Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu. The translation shows the original Chinese text, a nearly verbatim English translation, and a more readable, figurative translation, side by side for easy comparison. The Secret Tao is well researched and beautifully designed. The book is aptly named. With its new approach and new translation, a previously unknown Secret Tao is finally revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals techniques for achieving spiritual immortality through an in-depth exploration of Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching • Includes practices and meditations for living in harmony with the Tao (universal essence) and Te (kind action) • Reveals the integration of heavenly and human power in the mystic field within us • Presents Tao Huang's English translation of the Tao Te Ching from the original Chinese Mawangdui text unearthed in 1973 For over 2,500 years the words of the Tao Te Ching, the primary scripture of Laoism and Taoism, have been regarded as among the greatest treasures of the world. Lao-tzu, whose name means “the ancient child,” wrote these brief but essential verses that have both confounded and conferred blessings on humankind. Now Taoist masters Mantak Chia and Tao Huang guide readers through the origins of this philosophy, the meaning behind its 5,000 pictographs, and the way of living that generations have followed. While the text of the Tao Te Ching has been passed down in literary form for generations, the essence of the text can be understood only through heart awakening--a true integration of body and mind--made possible with the insights and exercises in this book. The authors analyze Lao-tzu's teachings, line by line, and offer meditations, interpretations, and practical illustrations that clarify the true meaning and purpose of this classic text.

Download or read book Nourishing the Essence of Life written by Eva Wong and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teachings of Taoism, China's great wisdom tradition, apply to every aspect of life, from the physical to the spiritual—and include instruction on everything from lifestyle (a life of simplicity and moderation is best) to the work of inner alchemy that is said to lead to longevity and immortality. Here, Eva Wong presents and explains three classic texts on understanding the Tao in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of the body that provide an excellent overview of the three traditional levels of the Taoist teachings—Outer, Inner, and Secret. The Outer teachings are concerned with understanding the Tao as manifested in nature and society. They are easily accessible to the layperson and consist of the Taoist philosophy of nature and humanity, advice on daily living, and a brief introduction to the beginning stages of Taoist meditation. The Inner teachings familiarize the practitioner with the energetic structure of the human body and introduce methods of stilling the mind and cultivating internal energy for health and longevity. The Secret teachings describe the highest level of internal-alchemical transformations within the body and mind for attaining immortality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a new version of the classic ancient text, the Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu. It is based upon a new and revised translation, originally published in the book, The Secret Tao: Unearthing the Hidden History and Meaning of Lao Tzu, by D. W. Kreger. Then, as a fun experiment, Dr. Kreger did another version in which he substituted the word Force everywhere it says Tao, and substituted Jedi everywhere it says Holy-man or Sage . The result is truly astonishing. The fit between the Tao Te Ching and philosophy of The Force is uncanny. Each of the 81 verses reads like pearls of wisdom by Master Yoda himself. This version of Lao Tzu, dubbed The Tao of Yoda, was originally released as an e-book online, and the response was amazing. Combining Taoism and The Force is a natural! And, a new pop-culture phenomenon was born. It is a must-have gift for any fan of Star Wars, Pop Culture, Taoism, or Eastern Religion. So was Lao Tzu a Jedi knight from distant galaxy? You decide. And, may the Force be with you!

Book Effortless Action

  • Author : Edward Slingerland
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Effortless Action written by Edward Slingerland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic account of the role of the personal spiritual ideal of wu-wei--literally "no doing," but better rendered as "effortless action"--in early Chinese thought. Edward Slingerland's analysis shows that wu-wei represents the most general of a set of conceptual metaphors having to do with a state of effortless ease and unself-consciousness. This concept of effortlessness, he contends, serves as a common ideal for both Daoist and Confucian thinkers. He also argues that this concept contains within itself a conceptual tension that motivates the development of early Chinese thought: the so-called "paradox of wu-wei," or the question of how one can consciously "try not to try." Methodologically, this book represents a preliminary attempt to apply the contemporary theory of conceptual metaphor to the study of early Chinese thought. Although the focus is upon early China, both the subject matter and methodology have wider implications. The subject of wu-wei is relevant to anyone interested in later East Asian religious thought or in the so-called "virtue-ethics" tradition in the West. Moreover, the technique of conceptual metaphor analysis--along with the principle of "embodied realism" upon which it is based--provides an exciting new theoretical framework and methodological tool for the study of comparative thought, comparative religion, intellectual history, and even the humanities in general. Part of the purpose of this work is thus to help introduce scholars in the humanities and social sciences to this methodology, and provide an example of how it may be applied to a particular sub-field.

Book excerpt: 'Of ways you may speak, but not the Perennial Way; By names you may name, but not the Perennial Name.' The best-loved of all the classical books of China and the most universally popular, the Daodejing or Classic of the Way and Life-Force is a work that defies definition. It encapsulates the main tenets of Daoism, and upholds a way of being as well as a philosophy and a religion. The dominant image is of the Way, the mysterious path through the whole cosmos modelled on the great Silver River or Milky Way that traverses the heavens. A life-giving stream, the Way gives rise to all things and holds them in her motherly embrace. It enables the individual, and society as a whole, to harmonize the disparate demands of daily life and achieve a more profound level of understanding. This new translation draws on the latest archaeological finds and brings out the word play and poetry of the original. Simple commentary accompanies the text, and the introduction provides further historical and interpretative context.
