Stumbling onto a scandal, Ciro is sent to hide in America and work as apprentice in Little Italy. Enza is bereft, but her life too is about to change. Unbeknownst to one another, Ciro is later a shoemaker and Enza is working in a factory in nearby Hoboken when fate reunites them. Book An Indiscretion in the Life of an Heiress and Other Stories

Download or read book An Indiscretion in the Life of an Heiress and Other Stories written by Thomas Hardy and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An Indiscretion in the Life of a Heiress', is one of ten stories - three collaborative, all uncollected - that are brought together in this volume. 'Indiscretion', derived from Hardy's unpublished first novel The Poor Man and the Lady, represents one of his earliest confrontations with theclass and gender issues which were to remain central to his fiction throughout his life. Several of the other stories, notably 'Destiny and a Blue Cloak', 'The Spectre of the Real', and 'The Unconquerable', raise similar questions, while at the same time illustrating, in typical Hardyan fashion, life's little (or somewhat larger) ironies. Some of the other stories are less characteristic: 'Old Mrs Chuncle', for example, approximates moral fable more closely than is usual for Hardy, while 'Our Exploits at West Poley' is anomalous not only in being (like 'The Thieves Who Couldn't Help Sneezing') a story written for children but alsoin experimenting with unreliable narration. Such stories are signifcant precisley because they incoporate varieties of technique, subject matter, and genre that are otherwise found in the Hardy canon either rarely or not at all.

Book The Amazing Shoemaker

Download or read book The Amazing Shoemaker written by Stefania Ricci and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairytales involving shoes and shoemakers, juxtaposed by the fantastical life story of iconic shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo Salvatore Ferragamo's amazing life in the context of an extraordinary journey into the world of fairy tales with shoes and shoemakers as their main characters. In the course of time, myths and legends from around the world have often featured shoes and the shoemaker's amazing craft, perhaps because the shoe is a symbol of grace and wealth, or perhaps because of that enchanted aura that surrounds the figure of the shoemaker. Salvatore Ferragamo's remarkable life, which runs parallel to stories of fairies, mystical shoemakers and magical shoes, also has the ingredients of a fantastic adventure. The reader will be spellbound by each and every chapter of this story and carried as if in a dream to the realm of imagination. This book journeys from Salvatore's childhood to his voyage on a steamer headed toward the United States to his arrival in Hollywood, where his shoes conquered the world of cinema and were worn by the most beautiful women in the world-the princesses and fairies of the modern age.
