Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secession Movement in the United States 1847-1852 The presidential campaign of 1844 marked the beginning of the last stage in' the long slavery struggle in the United States. It indicated that the South, driven to a defense of the institution of negro slavery by the rapid growth of Abolition sentiment at the North, had resolved upon securing full control of the National Government.1 The Democratic party was the chosen instrument by means of which this purpose was to be accomplished. Whipped into line by its aggressive Southern wing, it committed itself to the acquisition of new territory, which the South planned to create into additional slave States, with the object of acquiring control in Congress, without which it could not believe its favorite institution safe. Early progress in this direction gave promise of ultimate success. Texas was annexed to the Union as a slave State in 1845. During May of the following year war was de clared against the comparatively weak Republic of Mexico. Up to this time the anti-slavery forces, taken by surprise and OK their guard, had nothing more serious than written and verbal opposi tion, upon the part of isolated individuals, to Oppose to the pro slavery program. David Wilmot, a Pennsylvania Democrat, pointed out the way of attack, and paved the way for a concentra tion of the energies of the opposition, when, in August, 1846, he. Introduced into theeiouse of Representatives his famous Proviso for the exclusion, by an act of Congress, of negro slavery from the territory about to be acquired from Mexico. The sections at once locked horns in a struggle that precipitated a national crisis second only to the one of 1860. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secession Movement in South Carolina, 1847-1852 The period, 1847-1852, forms but a small part of the more than thirty-five years during which may be traced the course of events which found its logical fulfilment in the secession of South Carolina from the Union in 1860. Although limited in time and, in this thesis, restricted largely to one state, the dis union movement of this period possesses a unity and significance sufficient to warrant separate treatment. In its first phase it was primarily a Southern movement in opposition to the attempted prohibition of slavery in the territories acquired as a result of the Mexican War. It developed under the leadership of John C. Calhoun into an effort. To unite the South in a demand for the equality of the slave power within the Union or its independence without the Union. The difficulty of securing concerted action on the part of the slave holding states was demonstrated by the failure of the Nashville Convention, which, however, but for the Compromise of 1850, might have been, as Robert Barnwell Rhet't believed it would be, the beginning of a revolution. In this first phase South Carolina had played an important but not. Too conspicuous part. In the second phase she openly demanded the rejection of the Compromise and the dissolution of the Uni-on. Her disunion majority, however, was split into two factions: one demanding the secession of South Carolina alone from the Union; the other advocating disunion, but only in Pooperation with other Southern states. The victory of the latter faction and the acceptance of the Compromise by the other states prevented any precipitate secession. Few authors can afford to be as frank in their prefaces as Horace Greeley was in his, for he had the advantage of knowing that many would be interested in hearing whatever he might have to say and that there was some foundation for any seeming egotism. The preface to a volume like this is usually the last and the hardest thing to write. I have repeatedly rewritten this, in a vain effort to make it satisfactory to myself. I do not propose to expand it by telling what the book is about, or to apologize for writing it. The title and table of contents sufficiently indicate its general character. I have endeavored in a volume of moderate size to give a concise history of the development of the causes, of which slavery was the chief, but not the only one, that culminated in the Civil War. Although it is difficult to find new facts, it is still possible to array old facts in such a way as to give them a new interest, and to develop new theories more or less interest ing and instructive.
