Book excerpt: The author, Jack London, does wonders in this one, The Sea-Wolf. It is, amongst other books, one of the very best, and it even ranks as one of Jack London's top three, those being The Call of the Wild and White Fang. These stories are all endowed with a supreme being, where nature, animal, and human become merged into one entity, one single identity. This is literally the case for The Sea-Wolf. It does, once again, portray the main character, or one of them, as the black sheep, the hybrid, the loose canon in all of the character, but it does so in a different manner. This manner, in which the book is written, does not begin to cherish how Jack London's thoughts are deep. This aforementioned depth is none like the other, for it gives a new sense of identity, where all is integrated, all is one, and none are alike, nonetheless. This book is filled with raw human emotion, as well as animalistic, primal even, one might call it. However, it does not disgust the reader one bit. As a matter of fact, it interacts with them, as if it were another human being interacting with them. They feel engaged with, talked to, and, most importantly, drawn to the book itself, to its ideas. So on and so forth! The plot revolves around an intellectual named Humphrey Van Weyden. This man was brought to self-reliance due to the hardships life doted on him. This cruelty, brutality, and bitterness of life changed him completely. The story begins with a soft undertone with the protagonist. However, that sheltered view of life is soon shattered to pieces as they collide with another ship-where his story started-and everything crumbles down. The Sea-Wolf takes a turn for the psychological, as the protagonist is a queer individual, hedonist, and materialist. He embarks on a journey for the spiritual, racking his mind between two choice-pleasure or a new-found sense of immortality. In addition to the surface meaning provided by the author, there is a rip in the fabric of reality, where appearances deceive the not-so-keen eye, precisely when the author tampers with philosophy, biology, and psychoanalysis!

In van Weyden's case, the sea corrupts his character, thus highlighting that mankind is not above reproach, nor is it superior to nature.Van Weyden is symbolic of an Everyman, standing in for all of mankind. His descent into madness is symbolic of man's own darkness, something that seemingly lies just under the surface. If one is not careful, London seems to suggest, or if one becomes too boastful or egoistic, that inner darkness, which is as powerful as the rawness...

Book excerpt: The first book-length study of London as a maritime writer Jack London’s fiction has been studied previously for its thematic connections to the ocean, but Jack London and the Sea marks the first time that his life as a writer has been considered extensively in relationship to his own sailing history and interests. In this new study, Anita Duneer claims a central place for London in the maritime literary tradition, arguing that for him romance and nostalgia for the Age of Sail work with and against the portrayal of a gritty social realism associated with American naturalism in urban or rural settings. The sea provides a dynamic setting for London’s navigation of romance, naturalism, and realism to interrogate key social and philosophical dilemmas of modernity: race, class, and gender. Furthermore, the maritime tradition spills over into texts that are not set at sea. Jack London and the Sea does not address all of London’s sea stories, but rather identifies key maritime motifs that influenced his creative process. Duneer’s critical methodology employs techniques of literary and cultural analysis, drawing on extensive archival research from a wealth of previously unpublished biographical materials and other sources. Duneer explores London’s immersion in the lore and literature of the sea, revealing the extent to which his writing is informed by travel narratives, sensational sea yarns, and the history of exploration, as well as firsthand experiences as a sailor in the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. Organized thematically, chapters address topics that interested London: labor abuses on “Hell-ships” and copra plantations, predatory and survival cannibalism, strong seafaring women, and environmental issues and property rights from San Francisco oyster beds to pearl diving in the Paumotos. Through its examination of the intersections of race, class, and gender in London’s writing, Jack London and the Sea plumbs the often-troubled waters of his representations of the racial Other and positions of capitalist and colonial privilege. We can see the manifestation of these socioeconomic hierarchies in London’s depiction of imperialist exploitation of labor and the environment, inequities that continue to reverberate in our current age of global capitalism.
