Book excerpt: "The Cage is a tightly written and clear-eyed narrative about one of the most disturbing human dramas of recent years. . . . A riveting, cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked political power in a country at war. A must-read." —Jon Lee Anderson, New Yorker staff writer and author of The Fall of Baghdad In the closing days of the thirty-year Sri Lankan civil war, tens of thousands of civilians were killed, according to United Nations estimates, as government forces hemmed in the last remaining Tamil Tiger rebels on a tiny sand spit, dubbed "The Cage." Gordon Weiss, a journalist and UN spokesperson in Sri Lanka during the final years of the war, pulls back the curtain of government misinformation to tell the full story for the first time. Tracing the role of foreign influence as it converged with a history of radical Buddhism and ethnic conflict, The Cage is a harrowing portrait of an island paradise torn apart by war and the root causes and catastrophic consequences of a revolutionary uprising caught in the crossfire of international power jockeying. Gordon Weiss has lived in New York and worked in numerous conflict and natural disaster zones including the Congo, Uganda, Darfur, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Syria, and Haiti. Employed by the United Nations for over two decades, he continues to consult on war, extremism, peace building, and human rights.

Book Military Comedy Films

Download or read book Military Comedy Films written by Hal Erickson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Charlie Chaplin's Shoulder Arms, released in America near the end of World War I, the military comedy film has been one of Hollywood's most durable genres. This generously illustrated history examines over 225 Army, Navy and Marine-related comedies produced between 1918 and 2009, including the abundance of laughspinners released during World War II in the wake of Abbott and Costello's phenomenally successful Buck Privates (1941), and the many lighthearted service films of the immediate postwar era, among them Mister Roberts (1955) and No Time for Sergeants (1958). Also included are discussions of such subgenres as silent films (The General), military-academy farces (Brother Rat), women in uniform (Private Benjamin), misfits making good (Stripes), anti-war comedies (MASH), and fact-based films (The Men Who Stare at Goats). A closing filmography is included in this richly detailed volume.

Book The Tamil Separatist War in Sri Lanka

Download or read book The Tamil Separatist War in Sri Lanka written by Channa Wickremesekera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex and long-drawn war between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ended with the defeat of the Tigers in 2009. This book provides a military history of the conflict in tracing its evolution from a battle between a ragtag guerrilla force and a mainly ceremonial army to one between an organized guerrilla force with semi-conventional capability and a state military apparatus that had morphed into a large and potent force with modern armour, aircraft and naval vessels. Using a wide range of sources this book offers an incisive analysis of the progress and conclusion of one of the longest and most destructive wars in modern South Asia. Comprehensive and accessible, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern South Asia, especially Sri Lanka, military history, politics, defence and strategic studies, as well as the general reader.

Book Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers

Download or read book Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers written by Paul Moorcraft and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, the Sri Lankan government forces literally eradicated the Tamil Tiger insurgency after 26 years of civil war. This was the first time that a government had defeated an indigenous insurgency by force of arms. It was as if the British army killed thousands of IRA cadres to end the war in Northern Ireland. The story of this war is fascinating in itself, besides the international repercussions for terrorism and insurgency worldwide. Many countries involved themselves in the war to arm the combatants (China, Pakistan, India, and North Korea) or to bring peace (US, France, UK, and Norway). While researching this work Professor Moorcraft was given unprecedented access to Sri Lankan politicians (including the President and his brother, the Defense Permanent Secretary), senior generals, intelligence chiefs, civil servants, UN officials, foreign diplomats and NGOs. He also interviewed the surviving leader of the Tamil Tigers. His conclusions and findings will be controversial. He reveals how the authorities determined to stamp out Tamil Tiger resistance by whatever means frustrated the media and foreign mediators. Their methods, which have led to accusations of war crimes, were brutally effective but are likely to remain highly contentions for years to come.

Book Contemporary Piracy and Maritime Terrorism

Download or read book Contemporary Piracy and Maritime Terrorism written by Martin N. Murphy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do piracy and maritime terrorism, individually or together, present a threat to international security, and what relationship if any exists between them? Piracy may be a marginal problem in itself, but the connections between organised piracy and wider criminal networks and corruption on land make it an element of a phenomenon that can have a weakening effect on states and a destabilising one on the regions in which it is found. Furthermore, it is also an aspect of a broader problem of disorder at sea that, exacerbated by the increasing pressure on littoral waters from growing numbers of people and organisations seeking to exploit maritime resources, encourages maritime criminality and gives insurgents and terrorists the freedom to operate. In this context, maritime terrorism, though currently only a low-level threat, has the potential to spread and become more effective in the event of political change on land. It is only by addressing the issue of generalised maritime disorder that the problems of piracy and maritime terrorism may be controlled in the long term.

Book Counterterrorism Strategies

Download or read book Counterterrorism Strategies written by Yonah Alexander and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Counterterrorism Strategies, seven experts examine how the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Egypt, and Sri Lanka have combated terrorist groups from the 1970s to the present and draw lessons that are applicable to today's threats." "Counterterrorism Strategies shows that there are no simple or complete solutions to the dangers posed by determined and elusive terrorists, but several of the countries detailed here have had significant successes. The contributors' analyses of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of strategies used by these six countries offer a counterterrorism road map for the twenty-first century. This book is essential reading for policymakers, for counterterrorism scholars and professionals, and for members of the general public who are concerned about the general direction of the international campaign against terrorism."--Jacket

Book Battles Against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam L T T E In Sri Lanka

Download or read book Battles Against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam L T T E In Sri Lanka written by Brigadier (DR.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the firsthand account of the induction of Author and his Brigade into Sri Lanka on 11 October 1987 to form part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (I.P.K.F.) and immediately on landing; after a daylong air journey from Gwalior in central India to Palaly Airfield on the Northern tip of Sri Lanka; his launch into fierce battles, against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.), an ally turned bête noire, which he fought for a year thereafter. As per the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement, signed on 29 September 1987, between Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi and President of Sri Lanka J.R. Jayewardene, I.P.K.F. was sent to insurgency-stricken Sri Lanka to help restore peace in the Country. But the Agreement sadly failed and still more, digressing from the objectives of the Agreement, I.P.K.F. was ordered to launch an offensive against the L.T.T.E. Narrated here are many less known facts like the 'Quick Reaction Force' (Q.R.F.), under the Author's command, staged forward to Bengaluru, for rescuing President Jayewardene and his family, in case of a coup in Colombo, to overthrow him as also L.T.T.E.s decimation in 2009 by General Fonseka's Forces and his subsequent politically inflicted fall and rise. Twenty-four years after the withdrawal of I.P.K.F. from Sri Lanka, Author revisited the Jaffna Battles zone' in 2014 to see for himself the changes in life and subsistence of the Tamils in the Island nation. Albeit there was an apparent peace in the land, the politico-economic tribulations of the Tamil people were still writ large on the war-torn landscape of the place.

Book Brown Water Black Berets

Download or read book Brown Water Black Berets written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men of the U.S. Navy's brown-water force played a vital but often overlooked role in the Vietnam War. Known for their black berets and limitless courage, they maneuvered their aging, makeshift craft along shallow coastal waters and twisting inland waterways to search out the enemy. In this moving tribute to their contributions and sacrifices, Tom Cutler records their dramatic story as only a participant could. His own Vietnam experience enables him to add a striking human dimension to the account. The terror of firefights along the jungle-lined rivers, the rigors of camp life, and the sudden perils of guerrilla warfare are conveyed with authenticity. At the same time, the author's training as a historian allows him to objectively describe the scope of the navy's operations and evaluate their effectiveness. Winner of the Navy League's Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement in 1988 when the book was first published, Cutler is credited with having written the definitive history of the brown-water sailors, an effort that has helped readers better understand the nature of U.S. involvement in the war.

Book Small Boats Weak States Dirty Money

Download or read book Small Boats Weak States Dirty Money written by Martin N. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that pirates and other water-bound terrorists present a significant threat to international maritime security. Testing the validity of this claim, Martin N. Murphy scrutinizes recent incidents of maritime terrorism and locates the commonalities between pirates and maritime terrorists that enable them to commit their extensive crimes. Murphy's research opens up surprising sites of contact between pirates and wider criminal networks, organizations that pursue their corrupt agendas not only on sea but also on land. It is these relationships, Murphy argues, that bring about the destabilization of states and regions in which piracy occurs. Murphy's most significant revelation is the way in which maritime criminality may disguise insurgent and terrorist activity, allowing such actors greater freedom to maneuver. Although these acts currently rank as a low-level threat, priacy feeds off of political upheaval. Before they can evolve into a truly powerful and dangerous force, however, maritime terrorists and insurgents will have to overcome significant operational and technical issues. They must also capture the attention of an international audience by committing atrocities at sea that are as devastating as those committed on land.
