Bernard Frischer focusses on the Epicureans, who are of special interest because their approach was at once extremely passive and extremely successful. Book excerpt: The Sculpted Word not only provides the fullest treatment yet of Keats's use of ekphrasis - a trope by which writer translate visual compositions into words - but also places the poems within their literary, cultural, and historical contexts. Grant F. Scott observes that in Keats we often feel that we are wandering through a museum with a particularly eloquent and subtle guide. On one level, the guide's efforts to capture such visual images as engraved gems, landscape paintings, marbles, and urns represent an attempt to defeat the dominion of the image by writing it into language. On a deeper level, Scott suggests, ekphrasis presents Keats with psychological issues that have less to do with aesthetics than anxieties over such issues as cultural heritage, poetic tradition, and gender identity. Everywhere in ekphrasis studies, he argues, we encounter the language of subterfuge, of conspiracy; there is something taboo about moving across media, even as there is something profoundly liberating.

He shows that this poem, aimed at promoting spiritual tranquillity, confronts two anxieties about death not addressed in Epicurus's abstract treatment--the fear of the process of dying and the fear of nothingness. Lucretius, Segal argues, deals more specifically with the body in dying because he draws on the Roman concern with corporeality as well as on the rich traditions of epic and tragic poetry on mortality. Segal explains how Lucretius's sensitivity to the vulnerability of the body's boundaries connects the deaths of individuals with the deaths of worlds, thereby placing human death into the poem's larger context of creative and destructive energies in the universe. Soft-Shed Kisses: Re-visioning the Femme Fatale in English Poetry of the 19th Century interrogates the construction and use of the fatal woman motif in the poetry of canonical male writers of the times, both Romantic and Victorian. Subsequent chapters investigate a variety of poems by John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Alfred Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Charles Algernon Swinburne in which the femme fatale surfaces as the most important character. Close-readings of poetry are enriched by an examination of the same motif in visual art, set against the vivid cultural background of the Victorian era.
