Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scriptores Historiae Augustae, Vol. 2: With an English Translation The traditional assignment of the several biographies to six different authors involves many difficulties and apparent inconsistencies and gives rise to various questions. Did each of the first four authors actually write a complete series of imperial biographies from which the various vitae of this collection have been selected? If so, who made the selection and on what principle was it made? Why did "Spartianus" write his Severus and "Capitolinus" his Marcus Aurelius, Verus, and Macrinus under Diocletian, and the former his Geta and the latter his Albinus, Maximini, and Gordiam under Constantine twenty years later? Download or read book The Scriptores Historiae Augustae Hadrian Aelius Antoninus Pius Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Lucius Verius Avidius Cassius Commodus Pertinax Di ius Julianus Septimius Severus Pescennius Niger Clodius Albinus written by David Magie and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scriptores Historiae Augustae, or Historia Augusta, is a collection of biographies of Roman emperors, heirs, and claimants from Hadrian to Numerianus (117- 284 CE). The work, which is modeled on Suetonius, purports to be written by six different authors and quotes documents and public records extensively. Since we possess no continuous account of the emperors of the second and third centuries, the Historia Augusta has naturally attracted keen attention. In the last century it has also generated the gravest suspicions. Present opinion holds that the whole is the work of a single author (who lived in the time of Theodosius) and contains much that is plagiarism and even downright forgery. The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Historia Augusta is in three volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scriptores Historiae Augustae, Vol. 3 I have received with gratitude my forces returned to me safe and sound. Yet I cannot wholly con gratulate you that Valerian, prince of princes, is captured; I should congratulate you more, were he given back to his people. For the Romans are never more dangerous than when they are defeated. Act, therefore, as becomes a prudent man, and do not let Fortune, which has tricked many, kindle your pride. Valerian has an emperor for a son2 and a Caesar for a grandson, and what of the whole Roman world, which, to a man, will rise up against you? Give back Valerian, therefore, and make peace with the Romans, a peace which will benefit us as well because of the tribes of Pontus.
