Book excerpt: When a ticking time bomb in human genes detonated, the Scourge of God began sweeping the planet, claiming its victims in a few short weeks. Soon an illusion of humanity haunted the streets, and its once-glamorous cities plunged into quiet darkness. The few who were spared by the Scourge were left to make sense of the new world. One of them, Vincent, was a passionate and good-natured man in his twenties. Having moved to New York City seven months before, after battling a life-sapping depression, he now faced the human apocalypse. New York City was a large wasteland of concrete, steel, rust, and broken glass. Birds ruled the sky, while rodents feasted on the ground-level remains. It was a dangerous and deteriorating place, but it became the staging ground for a new civilization. There Vincent found normalcy, friendships, love, and hope. Life seemed better than before the Scourge, but soon the injustices of the new world began raging a new battle within him. He decided to take justice into his own hands and become a new kind of Scourge. Loved by some. Loathed by others. Ultimately feared by all.

Book excerpt: I have never seen plague bring a man back from the dead. Nor do I know of any sickness, in England or upon the continent, that gives its victims a taste for living flesh. So declares Sir Edward Dallingridge, a noble knight whose years defending England on the battlefield haven't prepared him to face an enemy as chilling -- and relentless -- as the living dead. But even as his countrymen flee in horror, Sir Edward rides straight into the unholy infestation. For his lady love lies trapped behind a hundred miles of fiendish terror, and nothing will keep him from her. With little more than the armor on his back, the blade in his hand, and the loyalty of the two fellow warriors at his side, he is willing to spill an ocean of tainted blood to reclaim the country he serves and the bride he worships.

Book excerpt: Which is worse, a deadly threat or the method of eradicating the threat? The Scourge is a dynamic tale that recounts the snake attacks terrifying a Nigerian community. The first part of the three-part book, “The Spitting Cobra,” tells of a terrified woman who finds the bloodied remains of her dog. Weeks later, her daughter is trapped in the house with a snake. In book two, “Mysterious Deaths,” the story shifts to Lebdoa City University (LebCU), where a professor is considered a weirdo because of his love for snakes. Mysterious deaths suddenly start occurring on campus, and the carnival queen is struck dead by a snake during the students’ union week festival. The frightened students hold violent demonstrations, but many are killed when police move in to quell the uprising. In book three, “The Scourge,” the city’s snake scourge becomes full blown, and the people are drawn against the city council. Disappearances, incarceration without trial, arson and repression become the order of the day. People become doubly endangered, as they are caught between their fear of the snakes and of the city council that never took safety precautions, but is now committed to silencing those demanding action.

Book The White Scourge

Download or read book The White Scourge written by Neil Foley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-01-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book that fundamentally challenges our understanding of race in the United States, Neil Foley unravels the complex history of ethnicity in the cotton culture of central Texas. This engrossing narrative, spanning the period from the Civil War through the collapse of tenant farming in the early 1940s, bridges the intellectual chasm between African American and Southern history on one hand and Chicano and Southwestern history on the other. The White Scourge describes a unique borderlands region, where the cultures of the South, West, and Mexico overlap, to provide a deeper understanding of the process of identity formation and to challenge the binary opposition between "black" and "white" that often dominates discussions of American race relations. In Texas, which by 1890 had become the nation's leading cotton-producing state, the presence of Mexican sharecroppers and farm workers complicated the black-white dyad that shaped rural labor relations in the South. With the transformation of agrarian society into corporate agribusiness, white racial identity began to fracture along class lines, further complicating categories of identity. Foley explores the "fringe of whiteness," an ethno-racial borderlands comprising Mexicans, African Americans, and poor whites, to trace shifting ideologies and power relations. By showing how many different ethnic groups are defined in relation to "whiteness," Foley redefines white racial identity as not simply a pinnacle of status but the complex racial, social, and economic matrix in which power and privilege are shared. Foley skillfully weaves archival material with oral history interviews, providing a richly detailed view of everyday life in the Texas cotton culture. Addressing the ways in which historical categories affect the lives of ordinary people, The White Scourge tells the broader story of racial identity in America; at the same time it paints an evocative picture of a unique American region. This truly multiracial narrative touches on many issues central to our understanding of American history: labor and the role of unions, gender roles and their relation to ethnicity, the demise of agrarian whiteness, and the Mexican-American experience.

The Christian Writers’ Coach: How to Get the Most Out of a Writers Conference is the first in a series of books specially designed by Northwest Christian Writers Association writers. It is our goal to give you best-practices information and to put tools in your tool belt to help you succeed as a writer. We started this book with five bios of successful people in the industry. People who started out just like you and are making it in the world of publishing.

This book is designed as a primer for writers conferences. After the bios, the book is divided into three parts:

  • Before a conference
  • During a conference
  • After a conference

In each section, your questions will be answered in articles on how to be prepared and how to put your best foot forward. Then we have provided links to the most helpful resources on the web. We hope you find this a fun and interactive research tool.

God created you for a purpose, and he gifted you with the ability to use words to inspire others and to shape culture. It is our prayer that as you read this book, you will find new tools that will alleviate the mystery of publishing and help you fulfill the dream you were called to.

Book excerpt: The legions are in tatters, and the Gothic hordes are gathering beyond the mountains . . . 377 AD: Thracia’s legions are few and broken in the wake of the Battle of Ad Salices. But the scattered centuries and cohorts rally in an effort to blockade the Haemus Mountain passes and hold back the relentless attacks of Fritigern’s swelling Gothic armies. These passes must endure until Eastern Emperor Valens and Western Emperor Gratian can muster and bring their Praesental Armies in relief. Numerius Vitellius Pavo and the men of the XI Claudia return to Constantinople from their brutal Persian sortie to hear widespread tales of Thracia’s plight and the precarious mountain blockades. Each of them knows what is at stake should those passes fall: the heartland of the Eastern Empire would face the wrath of the barbarians and loved ones would be at the mercy of their savage blades. When the Claudia are despatched to aid the effort at the mountains, Pavo can think only of two souls wandering in the jaws of the Gothic threat: his beloved Felicia and his lost half-brother, Dexion. So he and his comrades march at haste, headlong into the storm that awaits them . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth's Sea Dogs investigates the rise and fall of a unique group of adventurers - men like Francis Drake, John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher and Walter Raleigh. Seen by the English as heroes but by the Spanish as pirates, they were expert seafarers and controversial characters. This riveting new account reveals them for what they were: extremely tough men in extremely hard times. They sailed, fought, looted and whored their way across the globe; in the process, they established a lasting British presence in the Americas, defeated the Spanish Armada, and made Queen Elizabeth I very wealthy, if seldom grateful.Author Hugh Bicheno sets the Sea Dogs in historical context and reveals their lives and exploits through diligent historical research incorporating contemporary testimony. With additional appendices, colour plates, the author's own maps and technical drawings, Elizabeth's Sea Dogs tells their vivid, extraordinary story as it was lived, in the author's trademark engaging style.
