Book Old Scots Brigade Being the History of MacKay s Regiment

Download or read book Old Scots Brigade Being the History of MacKay s Regiment written by John MacKay and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mackay s Regiment was one of the earliest Scottish regiments, being raised in 1626 and serving in the latter stages of the Thirty Years War in Germany on the Protestant side in the Swedish army. The great Swedish king and soldier Gustavus Adolphus, an ardent admirer of Scottish soldiers, incorporated the Regiment along with three other Scottish regiments, into his celebrated Green Brigade. The regiment first saw service under the King of Denmark, being raised by Sir Donald Mackay - later Lord Reay - and suffering grievous losses defending Danish territory against the advance of the Catholic Imperialists. When Sweden entered the war on the Protestant side, the regiment enlisted with him and drove deep into Germany, benefiting from the revolutionary battle tactics introduced by Gustavus. They took part in Gustavus s great triumph at Breitenfeld, and also in the hard-won victory at Lutzen in which the Swedish king was killed. At the subsequent Swedish defeat of Nordlingen, the regiment lost so many men that it was reduced to company strength. At the end of the war, the remnants of the regiment were amalgamated into the Royal Scots. This absorbing book will interest all members of the Clan Mackay and anyone keen on Scotland s proud military history.

Book excerpt: The Sword of Scotland is the story of Scotland's military heritage. Scotland's fighting men have played a part in shaping the history of our world, and many of the individual countries in it. Its contribution and its sacrifices have been out of all proportion to the size of the Country. The skirl of the pipes and the cry of 'here come the Jocks' have weakened the resolve of many a foe. The Jocks of every Scottish regiment conjure up an image of fierce determination and indomitable courage. To them defeat is unthinkable. The various reasons for this are key themes of this book. The geography of Scotland and its numerous wars with England have played their part. But for over 300 years Scottish regiments have fought with distinction and selfless sacrifice alongside their old foes and played a key role in preserving Britain's freedom. The clan structure and the tremendous pride in family that this has produced over the centuries are the foundations of the regiments of Scotland and their greatest strength in adversity. Everyone with a Scottish connection will understand and be able to relate to this book, which is the story of an unrivalled military heritage

Book The Scottish Regiments

Download or read book The Scottish Regiments written by Ted Nevill and published by Crowood Press. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish soldiers have served the British Crown in their own distinct units since the 17th century - a 300-year record which makes one Scottish regiment, by virtue of age, the senior unit of the British Army's line infantry. The history of these regiments - renowned in battle, and famous for their esprit de corps - has traced that of the British Army and Empire, expanding and contracting in war and peace. The Highland and Lowland regiments always had a particular character, and even in the days when units were known by numbers their semi-official names meant a lot more: the 42nd Foot were the Black Watch, the 92nd the Gordon Highlanders, the 2nd Dragoons the Scots Greys, and many others. They have made these names famous on a hundred battlefields - from the Great Lakes to Egypt, from Portugal to Waterloo, from Afghanistan to Zululand, from the Somme to Normandy, from Korea to the Gulf War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish soldier has been at war for over 2000 years. Until now, no reference work has attempted to examine this vast heritage of warfare.A Military History of Scotland offers readers an unparalleled insight into the evolution of the Scottish military tradition. This wide-ranging and extensively illustrated volume traces the military history of Scotland from pre-history to the recent conflict in Afghanistan. Edited by three leading military historians, and featuring contributions from thirty scholars, it explores the role of warfare in the emergence of a Scottish kingdom, the forging of a Scottish-British military identity, and the participation of Scots in Britain's imperial and world wars. Eschewing a narrow definition of military history, it investigates the cultural and physical dimensions of Scotland's military past such as Scottish military dress and music, the role of the Scottish soldier in art and literature, Scotland's fortifications and battlefield archaeology, and Scotland's military memorials and museum collections.
