Book The Scottish Police Officer

Download or read book The Scottish Police Officer written by Daniel Donnelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of policing is undergoing change in Scotland at present and the profile of the police officer differs from that of the past. This book takes an informative approach and offers a unique account and insight into the Scottish police organisation, describing the ‘Scottish police officer’ from the point of recruitment through to training, development and specialist policing. Written by an ex-senior police officer, this book examines how the qualified police officer goes about his/her daily work policing and how this has changed over time as a result of organised crime, terrorism and the changing priorities of the public and politicians. The contribution of non-police officers such as police civilian staff, auxiliaries and the private sector, plays a key role in the policing of Scotland in the 21st century and is considered at length. As police supervision and management is crucial to the organisation’s success, the subjects of personnel development, promotion and management in the police is examined with comment on the suitability of the system in the 21st century. The book concludes with commentary on the future profile of the Scottish police officer and makes some general comparison with their colleagues in the rest of the UK and European Union. This will be an essential text for police officers in Scotland and elsewhere and students and academics in the areas of law, politics, management, police studies, criminology and criminal justice.

Book Police in the Age of Improvement

Download or read book Police in the Age of Improvement written by David Barrie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of police history in Scotland has largely been neglected. Little is known about the Scottish police's origins, development and character despite growing interest in the machinery of law enforcement in other parts of the United Kingdom. This book seeks to remedy this deficiency. Based on extensive archival research, its central aim is to provide an in-depth analysis of the economic, social, intellectual and political factors that shaped police reform, development and policy in Scottish burghs during the 'Age of Improvement'. The key issues addressed include: the workings of traditional forms of law enforcement and why these were increasingly deemed to be unsuitable by the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; why, and in what ways, the pattern, nature and origins of police development in urban Scotland differed from elsewhere in Britain; in what ways the Scottish police model compared and contrasted with other British models; the impact of police reform on urban governance and the struggle between social groups for control of the local state; the concerns and priorities behind police policy. In addressing these questions, Police in the Age of Improvement moves beyond many of the 'problem-response' interpretations which have preoccupied many police historians, and locates reform within the wider contexts of urban improvement, municipal administration and Scottish Enlightenment thought. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the history of policing, urban management and social change in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Book The Scottish Office

Download or read book The Scottish Office written by David Milne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1957, this book gives a comprehensive account of the scope and variety of the work previously performed by Scottish Government departments in Whitehall during the second half of the 20th Century. The then Secretary of State for Scotland’s role was unusually diverse – he or she was the equivalent to a number of English ministers. The book examines this complex role and then analyses the work and organisation of 4 main departments: Agriculture, Education, Health and Home. The approach is a broad one, with an explanation given of how and why Scottish arrangements and practices differ from those south of the border.

Book HM Government Department for Justice The Scottish Government Second Report of the Inter Departmental Ministerial Group on Human Trafficking Cm 8731

Download or read book HM Government Department for Justice The Scottish Government Second Report of the Inter Departmental Ministerial Group on Human Trafficking Cm 8731 written by Great Britain: Inter-Departmental Ministerial Group on Human Trafficking and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second report of the IDMG on Human Trafficking; the group with responsibility for overseeing and assessing the UK's efforts to tackle human trafficking and modern slavery. The report provides an assessment of human trafficking in the UK building on the first report of the group which was published in October 2012. It shows that 1186 people were identified and referred for support in 2012 - an increase of 25% in the number of referrals from 2011 - though it is acknowledged that these figures are an underestimate of the largely hidden problem. The report shows that trafficking remains primarily an organised crime associated with gangs. Action to address the problem is planned with a Modern Slavery Bill to be published this year in draft form for pre-legislative scrutiny. The bill will consolidate into a single act the offences used to prosecute slave drivers. It will also introduce Trafficking Prevention Orders to restrict the activity and movement of convicted traffickers and stop them from committing further offences and a new Anti-Slavery Commissioner to hold law enforcement and other organisations to account. The offence of slave driving will carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, with those who already have a conviction for a very serious sexual or violent offence facing an automatic life sentence.
