Download or read book The Science of War written by G. F. R. Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of War: A Collection of Essays and Lectures, 1891-1903 For some years before his death it had been Colonel Henderson's intention to make a collection of his occasional papers and to publish them, in book form, in the hope that they might be of service to the profession he loved so well. Unfortunately, he never found time to carry this intention into effect; and consequently, in the absence of the master hand, the duty of selection has been entrusted to me. In the years covered by these pages, 1891 - 1903, the world learned much of war. It is therefore probable that something of what was written in 1891 would not have been written in 1903; it is even possible that, in some respects, the war in the Far East would have affected the opinions formed in South Africa. Nevertheless, I have found so much food for re ection in each one of these papers that I have not hesitated to include even the very earliest of them; for in these earlier writings is to be found the germ, at least, of nearly all the military thought of to-day. Similarly the text-books referred to are not those now in use. For unless tactical text-books were constantly to change, they would soon cease to be of any value whatever. The im portance of these books as the foundation, but the foundation only, of a military education is as great now as ever it was. Download or read book Bayonet to Barrage written by Stephen Manning and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How advances in weapons technology transformed the British soldier’s experience of war during the nineteenth century. How did technical advances in weaponry alter the battlefield during the reign of Queen Victoria? In 1845, in the first Anglo-Sikh War, the outcome was decided by the bayonet; just over fifty years later, in the second Boer War, the combatants were many miles apart. How did this transformation come about, and what impact did it have on the experience of the soldiers of the period? Stephen Manning, in this meticulously researched and vividly written study, describes the developments in firepower and, using the first-hand accounts of the soldiers, shows how their perception of battle changed. Innovations like the percussion and breech-loading rifle influenced the fighting in the Crimean War of the 1850s and the colonial campaigns of the 1870s and 1880s, in particular in the Anglo-Zulu War and the wars in Egypt and Sudan. The machine gun was used to deadly effect at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, and equally dramatic advances in artillery took warfare into a new era of tactics and organization. Stephen Manning’s work provides the reader with an accurate and fascinating insight into a key aspect of nineteenth-century military history.

Download or read book The Afghan Way of War written by Robert Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on key episodes in Afghanistan's long history of conflict with foreign forces from the early nineteenth century to the present, this book sheds new light on the Afghan "Way of War." Robert Johnson shows that, contrary to the stereotypes of primitive warriors enflamed with religious fanaticism, Afghan warfare has been marked by constant change as Afghani methods evolved to face new threats. From the dynastic struggles and popular resistance movements of the nineteenth century to the ideological confrontations of recent decades, Afghans have long resisted political coercion, military intervention, and foreign influence. To do so, they have developed sophisticated strategic approaches to deal with both internal unrest and foreign intrusion, while at the tactical level outthinking and outfighting their opponents at every step. The final part of the book, which deals with how the Taliban has contested Western intervention by borrowing from traditions in Afghan history and culture, will be of considerable topical interest in light of the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.
