Book excerpt: From the NOTES FOR TEACHERS. The exercises in this book should be practiced alternately with the reading lesson. Each lesson has a purpose, which should be explained to the class, in order that they may understand the results to be attained, and appreciate the importance of the practice. The essential elements of reading or speaking are voice, articulation, and expression; and the cultivation of these elements cannot fail to secure habits of utterance which are healthful to the speaker, and agreeable to the listener. VOICE: Voice is explained in Lessons II and VI. The exercises in Lessons III, IV and V are valuable as a means of strengthening the muscles of the chest, and of gaining control of the breath. Lessons VII, IX, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX and XXI are adopted for the cultivation of clearness, smoothness, variety, flexibility, and strength of voice. The regular practice of these vocal exercises is very strengthening to the muscles of the throat; thus rendering them less susceptible to the effects of exposure and disease. ARTICULATION: Articulation is a very important part of utterance; but it is often neglected, or exaggerated to the extent of affectation. Great care should be exercised in drilling the class to articulate distinctly without giving undue prominence to the effort. Lessons I, VIII and X explain the different sounds and their formation, according to the action of the organs of speech. Lessons XI, XII and XIII give excellent opportunity to cultivate proper utterance of the various combinations of these sounds. The analysis of words as produced by the organs of speech is a good mental discipline, which frequently develops a taste for analytical work. EXPRESSION: Proper expression in reading is the great object to be attained by these exercises. Pupils should be required to read every sentence with the same expression as when speaking their own thoughts. By this means a true impression is always conveyed. If this effort is made a special exercise, a desire for investigation and study will be promoted, greatly adding to the interest of every branch of knowledge. Lesson XXVIII contains easy examples for practicing conversational tones in reading. To vary the exercises, many of the selections may be used for vocal training. Those on pages 80, 86, 90, 93, 99, 101 and 110 were selected for this purpose. If rightly conducted, concert reading is very beneficial to pupils, on account of the greater amount of practice obtained, and the better style of expression required. The selections on pages 101 and 113 are very effective when skillfully rendered. Note. — This book may be used with equal advantage in the Grammar School or High School. The writer has obtained by its use most satisfactory results in the last four grades of the Grammar School.

Book Introduction to the Science of Language

Download or read book Introduction to the Science of Language written by A. H. Sayce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1900, this is the second of two volumes of the magnum opus from pioneer assyriologist and linguist Rev. Archibald Sayce and continues directly from the first, providing an introduction to linguistic roots, inflectional families of speech, agglutinative, incorporating, polysynthetic and isolating languages, comparative mythology, the science of religion, the origin of language and the relation of language to ethnology, logic and education. In it, Sayce was the first to emphasize the principle of partial assimilation and the linguistic principle of analogy. This 4th edition, ten years after the first, reflected on the limitations of science revealed since 1890, in an era when languages, like other humanities subjects, still idealised scientific approaches. Archibald Henry Sayce was one of the greatest comparative linguists of the time, being proficient in Accadian, Arabic, Cuneiform, Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew, Hittite, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Phoenician, Sanscrit and Sumerian. He had a good knowledge of every Semitic and Indo-European language and could write good prose in at least twenty languages. Sayce's first major contribution to scholarship was a highly significant translation of an Accadian seal, a 'bilingual text' from which to translate cuneiform, similar to the Rosetta Stone. Here then, no doubt, the reader learns from a master of comparative linguistics.

Book William Dwight Whitney and the Science of Language

Download or read book William Dwight Whitney and the Science of Language written by Stephen G. Alter and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2005-04-13 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistics, or the science of language, emerged as an independent field of study in the nineteenth century, amid the religious and scientific ferment of the Victorian era. William Dwight Whitney, one of that period's most eminent language scholars, argued that his field should be classed among the social sciences, thus laying a theoretical foundation for modern sociolinguistics. William Dwight Whitney and the Science of Language offers a full-length study of America's pioneer professional linguist, the founder and first president of the American Philological Association and a renowned Orientalist. In recounting Whitney's remarkable career, Stephen G. Alter examines the intricate linguistic debates of that period as well as the politics of establishing language study as a full-fledged science. Whitney's influence, Alter argues, extended to the German Neogrammarian movement and the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure. This exploration of an early phase of scientific language study provides readers with a unique perspective on Victorian intellectual life as well as on the transatlantic roots of modern linguistic theory.

Book Gesture

Download or read book Gesture written by Adam Kendon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gesture, or visible bodily action that is seen as intimately involved in the activity of speaking, has long fascinated scholars and laymen alike. Written by a leading authority on the subject, this 2004 study provides a comprehensive treatment of gesture and its use in interaction, drawing on the analysis of everyday conversations to demonstrate its varied role in the construction of utterances. Adam Kendon accompanies his analyses with an extended discussion of the history of the study of gesture - a topic not dealt with in any previous publication - as well as exploring the relationship between gesture and sign language, and how the use of gesture varies according to cultural and language differences. Set to become the definitive account of the topic, Gesture will be invaluable to all those interested in human communication. Its publication marks a major development, both in semiotics and in the emerging field of gesture studies.
