Book The Science and Lore of the Plant Cell Wall

Download or read book The Science and Lore of the Plant Cell Wall written by Takahisa Hayashi and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cell walls are composed of complex carbohydrates, proteins, phenolic compounds, and inorganic ions, all of which play functional roles. Cellulose (1,4-fO-glucan) and callose (1,3-fO-glucan) are synthesized in the plasma membrane, while other polysaccharides are synthesized in the Golgi. Plant cell growth occurs with the loosening of the walls, which may be caused by several enzymatic actions. Plant development is related to the morphological changes of cells and tissue, which is caused by structural changes of the walls."

Book Physiology and Biochemistry of Plant Cell Walls

Download or read book Physiology and Biochemistry of Plant Cell Walls written by Christopher T. Brett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have sought in this book to present a series of portraits of the plant cell wall as it participates in various different aspects of the life of the plant cell. Hardly any event in the cell's life occurs without involving the wall in some way, and as a result the book covers almost every aspect of plant cell biology, albeit from a special point of view. In presenting the various portraits, we have tried to show how the biochemistry, physiology and fine structure combine to give a full picture. In many cases, however, cell-wall research has not progressed far enough to give a complete picture, and numerous gaps remain. We are most grateful to Mike Black and John Chapman for inviting us to write this book and for their advice; to Clem Earle for his encouragement and help; to Dr P.M. Dey for his helpful comments; to the many contributors of photographs and diagrams; to Ros Brett, for taking more than her share of the parenting while writing was in progress; and, most especially, to Su Waldron for doing all the work on the word processor.

Book excerpt: This work is a comprehensive collection of articles that cover aspects of cell wall research in the genomic era. Some 2500 genes are involved in some way in wall biogenesis and turnover, from generation of substrates, to polysaccharide and lignin synthesis, assembly, and rearrangement in the wall. Although a great number of genes and gene families remain to be characterized, this issue provides a census of the genes that have been discovered so far. The articles comprising this issue not only illustrate the enormous progress made in identifying the wealth of wall-related genes but they also show the future directions and how far we have to go. As cell walls are an enormously important source of raw material, we anticipate that cell-wall-related genes are of significant economic importance. Examples include the modification of pectin-cross-linking or cell-cell adhesion to increase shelf life of fruits and vegetables, the enhancement of dietary fiber contents of cereals, the improvement of yield and quality of fibers, and the relative allocation of carbon to wall biomass for use as biofuels. The book is intended for academic and professional scientists working in the area of plant biology as well as material chemists and engineers, and food scientists who define new ways to use cell walls.

Download or read book Plant Cell Walls written by Peter Albersheim and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cell walls are complex, dynamic cellular structures essential for plant growth, development, physiology and adaptation. Plant Cell Walls provides an in depth and diverse view of the microanatomy, biosynthesis and molecular physiology of these cellular structures, both in the life of the plant and in their use for bioproducts and biofuels. Plant Cell Walls is a textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a professional-level reference book. Over 400 drawings, micrographs, and photographs provide visual insight into the latest research, as well as the uses of plant cell walls in everyday life, and their applications in biotechnology. Illustrated panels concisely review research methods and tools; a list of key terms is given at the end of each chapter; and extensive references organized by concept headings provide readers with guidance for entry into plant cell wall literature. Cell wall material is of considerable importance to the biofuel, food, timber, and pulp and paper industries as well as being a major focus of research in plant growth and sustainability that are of central interest in present day agriculture and biotechnology. The production and use of plants for biofuel and bioproducts in a time of need for responsible global carbon use requires a deep understanding of the fundamental biology of plants and their cell walls. Such an understanding will lead to improved plant processes and materials, and help provide a sustainable resource for meeting the future bioenergy and bioproduct needs of humankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis When the handbook Modern Methods of Plant Analysis, was first introduced in 1954, the considerations were: 1. the dependence of scientific progress in biology on the improvement of existing and the introduction of new methods; 2. the difficulty in finding many new analytical methods in specialized journals which are normally not accessible to experimental plant biologists; 3. the fact that in the methods sections of papers the description of methods is frequently so compact, or even sometimes to incomplete, that it is difficult to reproduce experiments. These considerations still stand today. The series was highly successful, seven volumes appearing between 1956 and 1964. Since there is still today a demand for the old series, the publisher has decided to resume publication of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis. It is hoped that the New Series will be just as acceptable to those working in plant sciences and related fields as the early volumes undoubtedly were. It is difficult to single out the major reasons for the success of any publication, but we believe that the methods published in the first series were up-to-date at the time and presented in a way that made description, as applied to plant material, complete in itself with little need to consult other publications. Contribution authors have attempted to follow these guidelines in this New Series of volumes. Editorial The earlier series of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis was initiated by Michel V.

Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Biology: The Plant Cell Wall, Volume 2 is a four-chapter text that covers the botanical aspects of cell wall. This book specifically discusses the cell types and cell walls in vascular plants, as well as the classification and constitution of cell wall. This book deals first with the fractionation, biosynthesis, components, formation regulation, and breakdown of cell wall. These topics are followed by discussions on cell wall polysaccharides, lignin structures, cell wall changes during cell growth, and the analysis of the wall-lysing enzymes. Other chapters examine the types and chemical components of cell wall carbohydrates and the surface processes in lignin polymer formations. A study of the phylogenetic aspects of lignins and lignin synthesis is presented. A chapter is devoted to the classification and features of plant species. The remaining chapter focuses on the non-vascular plants, protista, and metazoa. The book can provide useful information to scientists, botanists, students, and researchers.

Book Plant Cell Biology

Download or read book Plant Cell Biology written by Brian E. S. Gunning and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 1996 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous advances have been made in techniques and application of microscopy since the authors' original publication of Plant Cell Biology, An Ultrastructural Approach in 1975. With this revision, the authors have added over 200 images exploiting modern techniques such as cryo-microscopy, immuno-gold localisations, immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy, and in situ hybridisation. Additionally, there is a concise, readable outline of these techniques. With these advances in microscopy and parallel advances in molecular biology, more and more exciting new information on structure-function relationships in plant cells has become available. This revision presents new images and provides a modern view of plan cell biology in a completely rewritten text that emphasizes underlying principles. It introduces broad concepts and uses carefully selected representative micrographs to illustrate fundamental information on structures and processes. Both students and researchers will find this a valuable resource for exploring plant cell and molecular biology.
