Book Cork Bandon and South Coast Railway

Download or read book Cork Bandon and South Coast Railway written by Ernie Shepherd and published by Ian Allan Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third Midland title written by well known railway author is a history of this interesting Irish railway company which served the west of Cork, Ireland's largest county. The CB&SCR was one of the 'big four' constituents which formed the Great Southern Railways at the Irish grouping in 1925. The system operated over about 100 route miles and like so many Irish companies its history was complex and the finances were fraught at times. This is a full history with photos rather than a photographic book. It will take the story of these Cork lines up from their promotion to the closures of the 1960s. Companies which had associations with the CB&SCR, such as the Schull & Skibbereen narrow gauge line, will also be considered. Separate chapters deal with essential topics such as locomotives, including the only US built engines ever to run in Ireland, and rolling stock, the course of the line, accidents, and hotels and steamer services. It is hoped to include some scale drawings of locomotives and rolling stock for the benefit of modellers. Much of the essential reference material will be contained in the appendices at the end of the book. This will enable the narrative to flow and make the text more readable. This book will fill one of the few remaining gaps in Irish railway history. It will achive its commercial success, as have all the other Midland Irish railway titles, by selling into two distinct markets. There will be a strong local interest sale in Ireland with another market being found in the broader railway enthusiast community thoughout the British Isles.

  • Author : David St John Thomas
  • Publisher : Frances Lincoln
  • Release : 2014-02-06
  • ISBN : 1781011648

Download or read book The Country Railway written by David St John Thomas and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possibly read more than any other railway book, The Country Railway has sold over 170,000 copies. This is a redesigned edition of the original text and photographs. Everyone loved the country railway with its neat stations and colourful gardens, the shining brasswork of its tank engines, viaducts daringly built over gushing rivers, embankments carpeted with flowers, and guards whose appearance and voice as well as the traffic they carried in their vans reflected exactly the character of the terrain being served. Basing his work on deep historical research and rich personal experience, David St John Thomas lovingly portrays the branch and cross-country railway in all its nostalgic, technical and commercial aspects. He tells of the days of high expectation when the local promoters first met and chose the architectural style for their stations, sees the navvies at work hacking through the countryside, reports the arrival of the first trains, recalls the troubled realisation when traffic receipts failed to provide enough for dividends. Stations, signalboxes, engines and their men, coaches and trucks, cattle docks and railway pubs, junctions and termini, varied landscapes, special occasions and disasters... In words and pictures here is a unique study for railway enthusiasts and for those who just miss the passing of the country railway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By turning off the main highway and discovering old routes, some of which have been travelled for thousands of years, you will see Ireland in an entirely different way. Follow the Old Road will take you on a tour of a variety of pathways from great river roads to lost railways. Long before records began, travellers arriving on our shores found safe havens, natural harbours, the estuaries of rivers, and settled there, in sight of the ocean that had brought them to this land. Gradually they moved inland to more fertile soil, usually along the course of a river that provided both guidance and essential water supplies. In later centuries, great lords built their castles and monks their abbeys upriver, at the tidal limit. Some of the routes are still used today while others lie ignored and overgrown. Villages, and, later on, towns grew up around these castles and abbeys to serve their needs; towns that still prosper today.
