The book draws on an empirical study with Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh schoolgirls of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi descent in two regions of England and the strategies they employ to deal with the experiences of schooling. It demonstrates that they are far from being passive victims of static cultures, but are instead actively involved in creating and recreating identities that re-work both the residual cultures of the "home" and the regional cultures they now inhabit. The analytical framework that Farzana Shain develops here captures the complex reality of the lived experiences of Asian girls in contemporary Western society. She provides teachers with alternative ways of conceptualizing what it is to be an Asian schoolgirl and suggests how teachers can use their new understandings to improve their professional practice -- and the academic attainment of their students.

The experiences of fifty Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian families - mostly of Muslim faith - are studied with a view to discovering what parents expect from their children's school and how the teachers perceive their own role with regard to their students. These young people are the first generation of Asians to be educated in Britain. Their location in terms of their social class positions, gender and ethnicity are inextricably bound together. They describe how they see their past and their future. This is the first study to take account of boys and girls in order to capture the complexity of their lived experiences.

Book excerpt: This book—an ethnographic and discourse analytic study of an after-school video-making project for 1.5- and second-generation Southeast Asian American teenagers—explores the relationships among stereotype, identity, and ethnicity that emerge in this informal educational setting. Working from a unique theoretical foundation that combines linguistic anthropology, Asian American studies, and education, and using rigorous linguistic anthropological tools to closely examine video- and audio- recorded interactions gathered during the video-making project (in which teen participants learned the skills for creating their own video and adult staff learned to respect and value the local knowledge of youth), the author builds a compelling link between micro-level uses of language and macro-level discourses of identity, race, ethnicity, and culture. In this study of the ways in which teens draw on and play with circulating stereotypes of the self and the other, Reyes uniquely illustrates how individuals can reappropriate stereotypes of their ethnic group as a resource to position themselves and others in interactionally meaningful ways, to accomplish new social actions, and to assign new meanings to stereotypes. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand whether and how Central Asian female students' identities change because of their studies in American higher education and cross-cultural encounters. Using a basic interpretive approach, I interviewed six female students from five countries of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. My dissertation puts Central Asian women's identity formation in a historical perspective. This offers some insight into who the female students were before coming to the United States and some of the challenges women face while defining their identities and coming to grips with their identity changes. Based on the Reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity (Abes, Jones, & McEwen, 2007), the Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive Model of Culture Shock (Ward, Bochner, & Furnham, 2001), and the transnational feminist perspective (Grewal & Kaplan, 1994), the findings are divided into three chapters. The first findings chapter demonstrates the ambivalent nature of participants' views on their certain identity dimensions. The second findings chapter elaborates on the transformative effects of higher education in the United States on women's self-identity. The third findings chapter explores the in-betweenness of women's sense of self-identity after living and studying in the United States. The dissertation concludes by suggesting that universities should not view students' identity change as a pathology, but to understand the sense of in-betweenness and accept this complexity that is still in process. .
