Book Disciplining the Savages Savaging the Disciplines

Download or read book Disciplining the Savages Savaging the Disciplines written by Martin N. Nakata and published by Aboriginal Studies Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Nakata's book, Disciplining the Savages: Savaging the Disciplines represents the most focussed and sustained Indigenous critique of anthropological knowledge yet published. It is impressive, rigorous, and sometimes poignant: a must-read for anyone concerned with the troubled interplay of Indigenous issues and academic institutions in Australia today. The book provides an alternative reading for those struggling at the contradictor and, ambiguous intersections of academia and Indigenous experience. In doing so it moves beyond the usual, criticisms of the disciplines which construct the way we have come to know and understand indigenous peoples. Nakata, a Torres Strait Islander academic, casts a critical gaze on the research conducted by the Cambridge Expedition in the late 1890s. Meticulously analysing the linguistic, physiological, psychological and anthropological testing conducted he offers an astute critique of the researchers' methodologies and interpretations.. He uses these insights to reveal the similar workings of recent knowledge production in Torres Strait education. In systematically deconstructing these knowledges, Nakata draws eloquently on both the Torres Strait Islander struggle and his own personal struggle to break free from imposed definitions, and reminds us that such intellectual journeys are highly personal and political. Nakata argues for the recognition of the complexity of the space Indigenous people now live in -- the cultural interface -- and proposes an alternative theoretical standpoint to account for Indigenous experience of this space.

Book Teaching Self control Through Management and Discipline

Download or read book Teaching Self control Through Management and Discipline written by Tom V. Savage and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are children who act out in school because of problems at home; there are children who act out at home because of behavior they learn at school. The question that parents and educators must keep in mind when disciplining these children is not simply how to alter misbehavior, but in helping children express their autonomy in a more controlled, manageable way. The pivotal approach of this book lies in helping children develop this sense of self-control. This book takes the unique perspective of integrating management and discipline, giving readers the tools to think about and handle self-discipline and misbehavior in children. Instead of directing the focus on how to handle misbehavior, readers are shown the tactics for avoiding discipline problems, using numerous discipline scenarios and applications. Pertinent case studies and incidents help readers think through the problem and apply the appropriate ideas and actions. There is timely coverage of important research findings on motivations, establishing authority, managing the physical environment and many other significant topics. There are also in-depth discussions on group dynamics, motivations and discipline, dealing with persistent misbehavior, and handling serious misbehavior problems. Educators, administrators, school counselors, and parents.

Book Death of a Discipline

Download or read book Death of a Discipline written by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is among the foremost figures in the study of world literature and its cultural consequences of the past half-century. In this book, originally published in 2003, she declares the death of comparative literature as we know it and sounds an urgent call for a “new comparative literature,” in which the discipline is reborn—one that is not appropriated and determined by the market. Spivak examines how comparative literature and world literature in translation have fared in the era of globalization and considers how to protect the multiplicity of languages and literatures at the university. She demonstrates why critics interested in social justice should pay close attention to literary form and offers insightful interpretations of classics such as Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. Through readings of texts not only in English, French, and German but also in Arabic and Bengali, Spivak practices what she preaches. This anniversary edition features a new preface in which Spivak reflects on the fortunes of comparative literature in the intervening years and its tasks today.

Professor McKnight shows that the group of criminals who were the core of the habitual criminal group in Sung China were young unattached males with few lifeskills. What became of the criminal after capture and conviction is also an important aspect of this study, which addresses basic questions in Chinese punishment. This work is the first comprehensive study of law enforcement in traditional China. The depth and rigor to which the subject is treated would make it most appropriate for scholars in legal history and East Asian studies."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the heels of I Am the Brother of XX and These Possible Lives, here is Jaeggy's fabulously witchy first book in English, with a new Peter Mendelsund cover A novel about obsessive love and madness set in postwar Switzerland, Fleur Jaeggy’s eerily beautiful novel begins innocently enough: “At fourteen I was a boarder in a school in the Appenzell.” But there is nothing innocent here. With the off-handed remorselessness of a young Eve, the narrator describes her potentially lethal designs to win the affections of Fréderique, the apparently perfect new girl. In Tim Parks’ consummate translation (with its “spare, haunting quality of a prose poem,” TLS), Sweet Days of Discipline is a peerless, terrifying, and gorgeous work.

Book The Myth of the Noble Savage

Download or read book The Myth of the Noble Savage written by Ter Ellingson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-01-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important and original study, the myth of the Noble Savage is an altogether different myth from the one defended or debunked by others over the years. That the concept of the Noble Savage was first invented by Rousseau in the mid-eighteenth century in order to glorify the "natural" life is easily refuted. The myth that persists is that there was ever, at any time, widespread belief in the nobility of savages. The fact is, as Ter Ellingson shows, the humanist eighteenth century actually avoided the term because of its association with the feudalist-colonialist mentality that had spawned it 150 years earlier. The Noble Savage reappeared in the mid-nineteenth century, however, when the "myth" was deliberately used to fuel anthropology's oldest and most successful hoax. Ellingson's narrative follows the career of anthropologist John Crawfurd, whose political ambition and racist agenda were well served by his construction of what was manifestly a myth of savage nobility. Generations of anthropologists have accepted the existence of the myth as fact, and Ellingson makes clear the extent to which the misdirection implicit in this circumstance can enter into struggles over human rights and racial equality. His examination of the myth's influence in the late twentieth century, ranging from the World Wide Web to anthropological debates and political confrontations, rounds out this fascinating study.

Download or read book Salvation and the Savage written by Robert F. BerkhoferJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great, pre-Civil War attempt of Protestant missionaries to Christianize Native Americans is found by Robert F. Berkofer, Jr. to be a significant point of contact with enduring lessons for American thought. The irony displayed by this relationship, he says, did not really lie in the disparity between Anglo-Saxon ideals and the actual treatment of first peoples but in the failure of all, including the missions, to see that both sides had ultimately behaved according to their cultural values. Using the records of missions to sixteen tribes in various regions of the United States, Berkofer has carefully followed the hopeful efforts of sixty-five years. The ultimate outcome, when the Civil War brought most of the missions to an end, was only a nominal conversion of Native Americans, despite the unflagging optimism of missionaries struggling against cultural barriers.
