Book excerpt: King George III inherited two legacies from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660: his crown and a tradition of regal satire. As the last British monarch who fully ruled as well as reigned and as the last king of America, George III was the target of constant satiric attacks even before he came to the throne in 1760 and for years after his death in 1820. An interdisciplinary and intercontinental study, this book examines the political satiric poetry and political graphic prints of Britain and Colonial America during the late Georgian period--a tumultuous era that witnessed the American and French revolutions, the Napoleonic wars, and the birth of the Romantic movement. Using George III as his focal point, Vincent Carretta draws on a wide range of verbal and visual sources to illuminate the development of satire from the work of Charles Churchill and William Hogarth to Lord Byron and George Cruikshank. Extending the argument from his earlier book, The Snarling Muse, which dealt with satire during the first half of the eighteenth century, Carretta demonstrates that the satiric line of descent from the early decades of the 1700s through the 1820s is much more direct than most scholars have recognized. Throughout the book, Carretta examines not only how the monarchy was reflected in satire but how satire in turn may have influenced the regal institution. In the 1790s, for example, British satirists discovered that their earlier attacks on the king for not being kingly enough had brought an unanticipated consequence: they had created the basis for the fictional commoner-king, Farmer George, which the king's supporters used with great rhetorical effectiveness against the threat of revolutionary French ideas. Enhanced by more than 160 illustrations, George III and the Satirists effectively demonstrates how a wide range of materials, verbal and visual, literary and nonliterary, can be marshaled in an interdisciplinary pursuit that crosses conventional fields and periods, repositioning artists and authors who are too often approached outside their original contexts.

For centuries, satirists themselves, scholars, critics, and psychologists have speculated about the satirist's reasons for writing, temperament, and place in society. The conclusions they have reached are sometimes contradictory, sometimes complementary, sometimes outlandish. In this volume, Leonard Feinberg brings together the major theories about the satirist, to provide in one book a summary of the problems that specialists have examined intensively in numerous books and articles. In part 1, Feinberg examines the major theories about the motivation of the satirist, and then proposes that "adjustment" comes most closely to answering this question. In his view, the satirist resolves his ambivalent relation to society through a playfully critical distortion of the familiar. The personality of the satirist, the apparently paradoxical elements of his nature, the problem of why so many great humorists are sad men, and the contributions of psychoanalysts are explored in part 2, where Feinberg contends that the satirist is not as abnormal as he has sometimes been made to seem, and that if he is a neurotic he shares traits of emotional or social alienation with many others. Part 3 explores the beliefs of satirists and their relation to the environment within which they function, particularly in the contexts of politics, religion, and philosophy. Feinberg stresses the ubiquity of the satirist and suggests that there are a great many people with satiric temperaments who fail to attain literary expression. Ranging with astonishing breadth, both historical and geographical, The Satirist serves as both an introduction to the subject and an essential volume for scholars. Brian A. Connery's introduction provides an overview of Feinberg's career and situates the volume in the intellectual currents in which it was written.

The book reveals this artist's significant impact on both the international art scene and news media. The catalogue (checklist of the exhibition) is organised in two sections: works created before the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and those created after the Revolution. Ardeshir Mohassess has been living in self-imposed exile since 1976; after enduring harassment from his native country's national police, he fled to France. In 1979 he moved to the United States, where he has remained. Today, he is considered to be one of the most significant living Iranian artists. AUTHOR: Shirin Neshat was born in 1957 in Qazvin, Iran. Neshat moved to the United States in 1974. Neshat has exhibited her photography, film, and video works internationally and is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Infinity Award for Visual Art from the International Center for Photography (New York), and First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale (Italy). Nicky Nodjoumi was born in Kermanshah, Iran in 1942. After graduating from CUNY in 1975, he returned to Iran with plans to teach art. Soon after the 1979 revolution, Nodjoumi had a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran; the show was labelled anti-revolutionary and he was forced to leave Iran. Hamid Dabashi was born in 1951 in the south-western city of Ahvaz in the Khuzestan province of Iran. He is the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, the oldest and most prestigious Chair in Iranian Studies. So argues this wide-ranging book, which seeks to identify the essence of religious satire, beginning with the art of such Renaissance figures as Erasmus and Dürer and concluding with such modern writers as Beckett, Eliot, and Waugh. Modern painters and sculptors, though not often concerned with religious satire, may employ its themes--as indeed may practitioners of the "new science" flourishing since Newton. The theme of religious satire, in Kantra's words, is "man's encroachment on the divine--his effort to play God, in whole or in part--whether under the banner of religion or of humanity." Heroic art has the same subject but a different attitude: it celebrates man's pretensions to divinity, whereas religious satire mocks them--sometimes harshly, sometimes gently. "If heroic art is ennobling, satiric art is humbling." Comedy sometimes may be found in satiric works, tragedy never, and tragicomedy always. The book starts with a brief examination of medieval religious satire: the rough shepherds in mystery plays, the lusty clerics in Chaucer, the roof bosses of Gluttony, Lying, and the Devil swallowing Judas Iscariot in Southwark Cathedral. The Renaissance was a golden era for the genre. Dürer engraved Saint Jerome (who wrote satirical letters), his halo off center, in what Kenneth Clark calls "a typically Erasmian room" with the lion and the little dog in the foreground, "sharing a conspicuously self-satisfied contentment." Yet Dürer, according to Erwin Panofsky, "failed when confronted with the small, quiet, supremely ironic face of Erasmus of Rotterdam." But what artist could capture the author of The Praise Folly, who saw self-styled sapient humans as "a swarm of flies and gnatss . . . laying traps for one another?" Kantra contends that the English--Elizabethans, Metaphysicals, Augustans, Victorians, and moderns --have always mixed satire with comedy and tragedy. Donne wrote in Satyre III that "our Mistresse faire religion," can look like "neare twin" to a strumpet. Satire, Milton said, "was born out of a Tragedy, so ought to resemble his parentage." Consider his Satan and his fallen legions. Chesterton and Belloc lampooned "essentially modern men" who reject magic and religion. Today religious satire is more alive than ever--among both churched writers such as Eliot, Waugh, or Dorothy Sayers, and the unchurched such as Shaw, Joyce, and Beckett --in works that pull down the vanity of modern man's once-proud claim to have conquered nature.
