Excerpt: ... chapter V. the final doom of the devil. thus far we have traced in the pages of Holy Scripture the mysterious subject of Satan's origin and fall, his princedom, power, and activity on this earth of ours, and, to some extent, the extraordinary resources at his command as the chief rebel against God's Christ and His Church. We now come to consider the evidence afforded us in Holy Writ as to the final doom of this fallen but mighty spirit. The intimations of the Divine purpose to judge the god of this world and his kingdom are both clear and numerous. Nothing is more certain than the fact that the devil and his angels are living in terror of approaching doom, except it be that Jehovah has forecast the final sentence. The justice of the Divine procedure nowhere seems to be impeached by the great apostate. The only protest raised by the world of demons is that their term of respite be not shortened. Thus--' Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?' An awful sense of the propriety of the coming ordeal of Divine judgment appears to possess Diabolos and those who act with him in his rebellion. In pursuing our enquiry into the present branch of the subject, the reader's attention will be directed to the threefold aspect of the sentence of doom passed upon tl1e Tempter, or rather to the three periods or epochs marking Jehovah's sentence. But according to Henry Ansgar Kelly, this understanding dates only from post-biblical times, when Satan was reconceived as Lucifer, a rebel angel, and as the serpent in the garden of Eden. In the Bible itself, beginning in the book of Job and continuing through the New Testament, Satan is considered to be a member of the heavenly government, charged with monitoring the human race. In effect, he is God's Minister of Justice, bent on exposing sin and vice, especially in virtuous-seeming persons like Job and Jesus. He fills the roles of investigator, tempter (that is, tester), accuser, prosecutor, and punisher, but also obstructer, preventer of vice, and rehabilitator. He is much feared and despised, accused of underhanded and immoral tactics. His removal from office is promised and his eventual punishment hoped for. The later misreading of Satan as radically depraved transformed Christianity into a highly dualistic religion, with an ongoing contest between good and evil. Seeing Satan in his true nature, as a cynical and sinister celestial bureaucrat, will help to remedy this distorted view.
