Book excerpt: While the impact of the Persian style is undeniably reflected in most aspects of the art and architecture of Islamic Central Asia, this Perso-Central Asian connection was chiefly formed and articulated by the Euro-American movement of collecting and interpreting the art and material culture of the Persian Islamic world in modern times. This had an enormous impact on the formation of scholarship and connoisseurship in Persian art, for instance, with an attempt to define the characteristics of how the Islamic art of Iran and Central Asia should be viewed and displayed at museums, and how these subjects should be researched in academia. This important historical fact, which has attracted scholarly interest only in recent years, should be treated as a serious subject of research, accepting that the abstract image of Persian art was not a pure creation of Persian civilization, but that it can be the manifestation of particular historical times and charismatic individuals. Attention should therefore be given to various factors that resulted in the shaping of “Persian” imagery across the globe, not only in terms of national ideologies, but also within the context of several protagonists, such as scholars, collectors and dealers, as well as of the objects themselves. Knots, Art & History brings together the best, most unique carpets of the 14th-17th centuries from the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin's famous collection. Forty-five of the approximately 500 carpets from Spain, Egypt, Anatolia, the Ottoman Empire, the Caucasus, Persia and India represent the reunited collection for the first time in English. The catalogue presents the eventful history of the collection. With the beginning of research on Islamic art around 1900, and especially with Wilhelm von Bode's groundbreaking research on carpets, the Berlin Collection became the center of international investigations. European painting was a focus here and Wilhelm von Bode's dating method using paintings made the "Berlin School" known worldwide and influenced generations of researchers. The tragic loss of almost all large Persian rugs during World War II marked a turning point for the collection, and the subsequent Cold War division of the collection significantly disrupted further studies of and appreciation for the Berlin carpet collection. Following the reunification of Germany, the former East and West Berlin collections were again joined, and Berlin carpet collection shines again. Stunning illustrations and numerous details allow new insights and open up the peculiarities of each individual piece in the catalog section. This includes almost all exhibited carpets and is organised by chronology, geography and design motifs. A general introduction to each of the 9 chapters provides an overview of the historical, cultural and social context of each rug. Receiving special mention are the classical Anatolian carpets the ever-popular Persian examples, including the Persian animal carpets, the Mamluk carpets, and the niche or prayer carpets. Additional comparisons with other surviving rugs from private and public collections enhance the explanations and place the collection in an international context. Through detailed analysis and comparison, this book establishes the exceptional quality and uniqueness of many carpets including, the famous Dragon- Phoenix Carpet, the so-called Synagogue Carpet and the Indian Flower Carpet.

Book excerpt: Religion has always been a fundamental force for constructing identity, from antiquity to the contemporary world. The transformation of ancient cults into faith systems, which we recognise now as major world religions, took place in the first millennium AD, in the period we call 'Late Antiquity'. Our argument is that the creative impetus for both the emergence, and much of the visual distinctiveness of the world religions came in contexts of cultural encounter. Bridging the traditional divide between classical, Asian, Islamic and Western history, this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue highlights religious and artistic creativity at points of contact and cultural borders between late antique civilisations. This catalogue features the creation of specific visual languages that belong to four major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. The imagery still used by these belief systems today is evidence for the development of distinct religious identities in Late Antiquity.
